Of 100 malnourished Indian infants and children 50 showed a stool pH below 6. Carbohydrate-loading tests demonstrated intolerance to lactose in 39, to sucrose in 25, and to maltose in 15. D-Xylose absorption was reduced in 16. Steatorrhoea was detected in 7 of 18 children tested. Nutritional recovery reversed the abnormalities in all except four, in whom a primary enzymic deficiency was considered on the basis of persistent lactose intolerance and a positive family history.

We evaluated a recombinant antigen (OC 3.6 cDNA) expressed in pMAL TM vector for the diagnosis of onchocerciasis in children living in an endemic focus of forest-type onchocerciasis in Nigeria. Using the Western blot with the maltose-binding fusion protein as antigen, 91 per cent of mf-positive children and 24 per cent of endemic normal children were positive. Furthermore, age was not a limitation to the assay. The practical limitations of the assay for field diagnosis of onchocerciasis is discussed.

As part of a project to establish a reference strain collection, phenotypic, biochemical and genetic analyses were carried out on 84 strains of Bacillus anthracis, 81 of them of Chinese origin from various sources. Particular differences from reports on isolates of other origins were the possession of fimbriae and single polar flagella with consequent motility in 77, self-agglutination by 64 and failure to ferment maltose in 60 of the Chinese strains. The findings were considered to be of significance to identification, classification and evolution of B. anthracis.

Ethyl-methyl-sulphonate mutants of Listeria monocytogenes might be different from the parent strain in phage type and in splitting of lactose, maltose, melezitose, sucrose and trehalose. Differences were observed in repeated control studies in phage type and carbohydrate-decomposition of 550 Listeria strains isolated from a variety of sources (patients, healthy and dead animals). It has been concluded that certain carbohydrate tests are unsuitable for distinguishing biotypes of Listeria. An improvement of the evaluation of phage typing results is recommended.

Nicotine can cause oxidative damage to organisms; however, some bacteria, for example Pseudomonas sp. HF-1, are resistant to such oxidative stress. In the present study, we analyzed the concentration-dependent metabolic response of Pseudomonas sp. HF-1 to nicotine stress using ¹H NMR spectroscopy coupled with multivariate data analysis. It has been suggested that the glucose transport system of human erythrocytes contains an arginine shield to prevent the leak of potassium through the transporter. To investigate this suggestion we treated human erythrocytes with the specific arginine reagent 1,2-cyclohexanedione. BALB/c mice were immunized with the recombinant Brucella abortus L7/L12 ribosomal protein fused to maltose binding protein (MBP).
