BACKGROUND: In Germany, all women aged 50-69 have been invited to biennial mammography screening since 2009. We aimed to assess longitudinal adherence over ten years in women aged 50 in 2009 and characterize the different adherence groups.
METHODS: Using the German Pharmacoepidemiological Research Database (GePaRD, ~ 20% of the German population), we included women aged 50 in 2009 (baseline) with continuous health insurance coverage and without breast cancer or in-situ-carcinoma. We followed them until age 59 and categorized them according to mammography screening participation into the follo

INTRODUCTION: Although primarily used for female patients, mammography is a valuable tool for detecting male breast abnormalities, providing detailed images of breast tissue. Due to the low incidence of male breast imaging, limited male-specific studies exist on radiation exposure. This study measured the acquisition radiation dose of male patients undergoing full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) at an Australian tertiary hospital and compared these values with published cohorts. The goal was to determine whether differences in breast anatomy between sexe

Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) has emerged as a viable alternative to contrast-enhanced breast MRI, and it may increase access to vascular imaging while reducing examination cost. Intravenous iodinated contrast materials are used in CEM to enhance the visualization of tumor neovascularity. After injection, imaging is performed with dual-energy digital mammography, which helps provide a low-energy image and a recombined or iodine image that depict enhancing lesions in the breast. CEM has been demonstrated to help improve accuracy compared with digital mammography and US in women with abnor

Mammography is a proven tool for detecting breast cancer and reducing breast cancer mortality, but breast sonography plays an important role in promoting breast health, too. These modalities can complement each other, especially when images are correlated to examine an abnormality or suspicious area. This article discusses how breast sonography supplements mammography as a screening and diagnostic technique, how mammographic and sonographic images are correlated, and how some common breast diseases and conditions appear on the 2 modalities. The limitations of both breast imaging modalities als

AIM: Obese women tend to participate less in breast cancer screening than normal weight women. However, obese women have fattier breast than normal weight women, and screening mammography works better in fatty than in dense breasts. One might, therefore, hypothesise that obese women would actually benefit more from screening than other women.
METHODS: We combined data from the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health study and the organised population-based screening mammography programme in Copenhagen, Denmark. Women were categorised according to body mass index (BMI) (<20; 20 to <25; 25 to <30; 30 to

With a monthly total of more than one billion unique visitors, YouTubeTM is one of the Internet's most visited websites and contributes to the growing amount of health-related information on the Internet. The purpose of this study was to analyze coverage of mammography screening in popular YouTubeTM videos. A total of 173 videos were included in the analysis. Compared with professionally created videos, consumer-created videos had a significantly greater number of comments (>9 comments 38.0% for consumer vs. 11.8% for professional videos, p=<0.001). OBJECTIVE: To analyse the percentage of women with a family history of breast cancer referred by general practitioners (GPs) for a screening mammography in accordance with the Dutch Breast Cancer Guideline produced by the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Centre (IKNL).
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
METHOD: Women referred by their GP between December 2011 and December 2012 for mammography, with the indication "family history of breast cancer", were invited to take part in this study. A trained radiology laboratory assistant carried out a structured questionnaire to assess their risk on th

UNLABELLED: Mammography has been established as an effective screening tool for the early detection of breast cancer. Obesity may lead to increased breast size and has been linked to increased rates of breast cancer. As women with larger breasts may be predisposed to developing cancer, it is important that mammography is an appropriate test in these women. This study investigated the sensitivity and specificity of mammography in women with larger breasts in a population screening program.
METHOD: Data was obtained from 848,648 eligible screening episodes of women aged over 40. Of these episod

BACKGROUND: Trials have shown that mammography screening reduces mortality and probably decreases morbidity related to breast cancer.
METHODS: We assessed whether the major mammography service in Western Australia (BreastScreen WA) is likely to reduce mortality by comparing prognostic variables between screen-detected and other cases of breast cancer diagnosed in 1999. We assessed likely reductions in morbidity by comparing treatments received by these two groups. To confirm mortality and morbidity reduction, we also compared prognostic variables and treatments with targets. Information on de

PURPOSE: BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations significantly increase a women's lifetime risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Because several management options have shown promise in decreasing morbidity and mortality for these women, identifying potential mutation carriers is increasingly important. We have developed a large-scale method to collect family histories in a population of unaffected women presenting for mammography. We then applied current risk-assessment models to determine the prevalence of women at risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospe

PURPOSE: To establish a grading system for mammographic fibrosis and correlate it with clinical fibrosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Analogous to the LENT/SOMA scale a four-tiered scoring scale of breast fibrosis in mammography (G0 = absent, G1 = barely increased density, G2 = definitely increased density to G3 = very marked density) was established by two observers in a group of 16 patients. Reference mammograms were selected. Independently and blinded to clinical results, three observers scored the fibrosis in mammograms of further 31 patients examined by one radiation oncologist in a cross-sect

OBJECTIVE: To examine mammography utilization and subsequent clinical decisions in a skilled nursing facility in women aged 75 years and older with no history of breast cancer.
METHODS: This study was a retrospective medical chart review of 95 women living in a skilled nursing facility aged 75 years and older who did not have a history of breast cancer.
RESULTS: One-hundred seventy-nine mammograms were performed on 95 patients with an average of 1.9 mammograms per patient. Forty-five percent of the women had some evidence of abnormal results requiring further investigation.
DISCUSSION: Dete

PURPOSE: To explore the rates and correlates of discomfort at mammography in asymptomatic women aged 50-74 years from six San Diego, Calif, mammography facilities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects (N = 1,800) completed a 43-item telephone interview approximately 3 weeks after screening mammography. Bivariate associations between variables were analyzed with chi(2) analysis. Logistic regression was used to assess the independent predictors of discomfort at mammography while controlling for all other factors.
RESULTS: Nine hundred thirty-three (52%) women reported moderate to extreme discomfort

PURPOSE: The value of mammography for asymptomatic women younger than 50 years of age has been under debate, and it had been suggested that each woman should decide for herself whether to start having mammograms in her 40s. This decision-making process requires women to have knowledge of screening guidelines. This study reported key determining informational factors that led women age 40 and older to obtain a mammogram.
DESCRIPTION OF STUDY: To examine the relationship between sources of information and utilization of mammography, the authors conducted a communitywide telephone survey, in Eng

The revolution in digital computer technology that has made possible new and sophisticated imaging techniques may next influence the interpretation of radiologic images. In mammography, computer vision and artificial intelligence techniques have been used successfully to detect or to characterize abnormalities on digital images. Radiologists supplied with this information often perform better at mammographic detection or characterization tasks in observer studies than do unaided radiologists. This technology therefore could decrease errors in mammographic interpretation that continue to plague
