Effect of two types of mandibular advancement splints on snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) both seem at least to be associated with narrowing of the upper airway and sleep-induced loss of muscle-tone. Mandibular advancement splints (MAS) have been proposed as a relatively simple method to increase oro- and hypo-pharyngeal dimensions thereby increasing the size of the airway. However, data on their effectiveness are conflicting and there are no clear indications as to which design is most effective or when they should be used. The effects of two designs of splint (types A and B) have been evaluated in 14 and nine subjects, respectively, usin

Kinematical Effects of a Mandibular Advancement Occlusal Splint on Running until Exhaustion at Severe Intensity.

The effects of occlusal splints on sport performance have already been studied, although their biomechanical impacts are often overlooked. We investigated the kinematical changes during running until exhaustion at severe intensity while wearing a mandibular advancement occlusal splint. Twelve trained runners completed (i) an incremental protocol on a track to determine their velocity corresponding to maximal oxygen uptake and (ii) two trials of square wave transition exercises at their velocity corresponding to maximal oxygen until exhaustion, wearing two occlusal splints (without and with man

Vertical ramus elongation and mandibular advancement by endobuccal approach: Presentation of a new osteotomy technique.

INTRODUCTION: Several surgical procedures have been proposed for the treatment of hyperdivergent dentoskeletal deformities. We propose a new osteotomy technique allowing for lengthening and advancement of the mandibular ramus by intra-oral approach. SURGICAL PROCEDURE: This technique differs from the conventional sagittal split osteotomyin that which the anterior osteotomy line is not continued until the basilar edge but stopped 5-6mm above it. Cutting of the pterygomasseteric sling is systematically done allowing for the lowering of the mandibular angle. Osteosynthesis is performed by transj

Maxillary, mandibular, and chin advancement: treatment planning based on airway anatomy in obstructive sleep apnea.

Surgical correction of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome involves understanding a number of parameters, of which the 3-dimensional airway anatomy is important. Visualization of the upper airway based on cone beam computed tomography scans and automated computer analysis is an aid in understanding normal and abnormal airway conditions and their response to surgery. The goal of surgical treatment of OSA syndrome is to enlarge the velo-oropharyngeal airway by anterior/lateral displacement of the soft tissues and musculature by maxillary, mandibular, and possibly, genioglossus advancement.
