BACKGROUND: Mandibular condyle fractures can be treated conservatively by intermaxillary fixation (IMF) or by open reposition and internal fixation. Although many studies have discussed for the optimal treatment method, the issue remains controversial. In this study, we aimed to compare conservative techniques in the mandibular condyle fractures.
METHODS: Twenty four unilateral condyle fracture patients aged between 18 and 48 years were treated according to one of three different modalities. Bracketing, arch bar or mini screw was applied to all non-surgery patients to obtain IMF. Eight patien

Hyperplasia of the mandibular condyle is self-limiting, but can lead to facial asymmetry, malocclusion, pain, and dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Bone scintigraphy, particularly with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), is effective in assessing relative condylar uptake, but we know of no standardised methods or values. Our aim, therefore was to validate the values currently used to measure relative condylar uptake in our population. Between December 2015 and June 2018 44 patients had skull SPECT (15 male and 29 female patients, whose ages ranged from 4-33 year

The purpose of this study was to determine the position of mandibular condyles during wearing of stabilization splints with different thickness. Two stabilization splints were made for 10 completely dentate participants. First splint was made with minimal 1 mm distance at molar area between the upper and lower teeth, while the second splint was made 3 mm higher than the first splint. Condylar position measurements during splint wearing were done using ultrasound jaw tracking device with six degrees of freedom at the antero-posterior (x), vertical (y) and lateral (z) axes. Linear deviation valu

PURPOSE: Traumatic injuries of the mandible resulting in intrusion of the condyle into the middle cranial fossa are rare and treatment is often based on anecdotal experience. The objective of this study was to develop an algorithm for the management of condylar intrusion injuries by identifying factors that influenced the treatment decision of closed versus open reduction of the condyle.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a systematic review of the literature on intracranial intrusion injuries of the mandibular condyle. A thorough search of the PubMed and Cochrane databases and individual

An osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle is a rare tumour of the maxillofacial region that could first present to the general dental practitioner. This case report describes an osteochondroma of the posterio-medial mandibular condyle presenting with marked facial asymmetry and trismus over a six- month period. Appropriate referral and investigation enabled successful removal of the tumour, recontouring of the condyle and an uncomplicated, positive outcome for our patient. Clinical Relevance: Temporomandibular joint disorders can be a cause of dento-facial asymmetry. Pathology of the temporo

INTRODUCTION: The shape and volume of the condyle is considered to play an important role in the pathogenesis of the mandibular deviation. Curvature analysis is informative for objectively assess whether the shape of the condyles matches that of the glenoid fossa. In this study, a three-dimensional (3-D) quantification of bilateral asymmetrical condyles was firstly conducted to identify the specific role of 3-D condylar configuration for mandibular asymmetry.
METHODS: 55 adult patients, 26 males (26 ± 5 yrs) and 29 females (26 ± 5 yrs), diagnosed with mandibular asymmetry were included. The e

The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of superolateral dislocation of the mandibular condyle, and to review our experience of its treatment. Thirteen patients were included in this study. Demographic information and details of their original injury were analyzed by descriptive statistics and the treatment methods were summarized. These patients could be classified into three types: (1) unilateral dislocation with isolated condylar fracture (n=3); (2) unilateral dislocation with associated condylar fracture and other mandibular fracture (n=7); (3) b

PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility and indication of condylectomy for treatment of comminuted fractures of the condyle above the neck.
METHODS: Sixty-one patients with condylar fractures, treated between September 2007 and September 2011 were reviewed respectively. Among them, 30 underwent open reduction and internal fixation, 15 underwent conservative therapy, and 16 patients (18 sides) who had comminuted fractures of the condyle above the neck underwent condylectomy. All the patients were followed up for 5 to 48 months after treatment to evaluate the outcomes.
RESULTS: Among the 16 pa

A rare case of aplasia of mandibular condyle associated with some other orthopaedic problems is presented. A 5-year-old boy attended our clinic with a chief complaint of facial asymmetry and chewing difficulty. The mandible was deviated to the left. The occlusion also showed a deflection to the left of the mandibular midline. He also had walking difficulty owing to a hip abnormality. Panoramic radiographic examination of the patient revealed that the left mandibular condyl was totally absent. The right condyle was unremarkable. His history revealed neither trauma nor any significant disease. A

Osteonecrosis of the mandibular condyle is a rare condition characterized by a primary subchondral osseous breakdown of the condyle with secondary articular surface collapse. Despite these characteristics, it has proved to be difficult to diagnose. The present case of osteonecrosis of the mandibular condyle was initially diagnosed more than 2 years before. The diagnosis at that time was based on physical examination, plain film radiography, cone-beam computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and total body scintigraphy. The disease had progressed into severe osteoarthrosis at a 2-ye

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to present a conservative condylectomy technique (condylectomy performed below the condylar head but high in the condylar neck) and articular disc repositioning as the surgical treatment approach for management of osteochondroma of the head of the mandibular condyle.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six patients (4 females and 2 males) with an average age of 22.3 years (range, 13 to 32 years) and with an osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle were treated with conservative condylectomy. The remaining condylar neck stump was recontoured, and the articular disc

Osteochondroma is rarely found in the oral and maxillofacial regions. A rare case of osteochondroma affecting the mandibular condyle of a 46-year-old Japanese woman is reported. Clinical examination revealed facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and a palpable hard mass in the right temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Radiologically, the lesion was visualized as a radiopaque mass in the same region, but no destructive features were evident. Three-dimensional computed tomography was employed for estimating the stereographic extension of the lesion, which seemed to develop from the anterior portion of the

Osteopetrosis is an inherited metabolic disease which produces an excessive accumulation of bone caused by deficiency of osteoclasts. It is characterized by systemic bone sclerosis, cranial deformation and failure of tooth eruption due to defective bone resorption. In this study, morphological change of the mandible was observed in growing osteopetrotic (op/op) mutant mice. Deformation of the condylar process, non-ossification of the condyle head and underdevelopment of the lateral pterygoid muscle were observed in the mutant mice. Although these phenomena were brought about by failure of the
