In this study, the continuous flow moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was developed for conversion of nitrogen and manganese including MBBR1 (R1, with manganese redox cycling function) and MBBR2 (R2, control group). The result suggested that NH4+-N removal reached 95±2% and 78±1% by R1 and R2 with NO3--N effluent concentrations of 2.1±0.4 and 7.1±0.6 mg·L-1, and TN removal through R1 increased compared with R2. Fluorescence characteristics and concentration of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were explored, and reactive oxygen species, apoptosis and enzyme activity of biofilm including …

Pigs received a diet containing 0.59 p.p.m. Mn. Control pigs received the samequantity of the same diet which was supplemented with 22 p.p.m. of Mn. At the end of6 weeks, pigs fed the low Mn diet had a diminution in tissue Mn levels as well as a diminution in tissue Se content. Tissue levels of Zn, Cu, Ca, and Mg were notaffected by the dietary regimen. Indicative of the fact that experimental animals were probably Mn-deficient was a statistically significant decrease in hepatic arginaseactivity that could be enhanced by the addition of Mn. These studies represent the first experimental eviden

This study investigated the effects of different manganese forms (MnCl2 and MnO2) on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance of moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). Compared to the control without manganese, the addition of MnCl2 and MnO2 increased NO3--N removal efficiency by 11.47 % and 9.54 %, and total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency by 17.91 % and 15.45 %, respectively. The average accumulation of NO2--N decreased from 3.02 to 0.04 mg/L and 0.18 mg/L, respectively. The manganese redox system induced by MnCl2 enhanced total phosephorus (TP) removal efficiency by approximately 3.5 ti…

Regional contamination by electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) not only composes a serious environmental problem but also leads to severe valuable resources waste. Directly recovering manganese and ammonium sulfate is a promising way, but it is still challenging to efficiently recover without high water consumption. Herein, a recovery method based on water column leaching under extremely low water consumption was firstly reported. The effect of continuous leaching and intermittent leaching on leaching behaviors, leaching trends, and spatial variations of (NH4)2SO4 and Mn with depth after leach…

Expansion of a polyglutamine tract in Huntingtin (Htt) leads to the degeneration of medium spiny neurons in Huntington's disease (HD). Furthermore, the HTT gene has been functionally linked to iron (Fe) metabolism, and HD patients show alterations in brain and peripheral Fe homeostasis. Recently, we discovered that expression of mutant HTT is associated with impaired manganese (Mn) uptake following overexposure in a striatal neuronal cell line and mouse model of HD. Here we test the hypothesis that the transferrin receptor (TfR)-mediated Fe uptake pathway is responsible for the HD-associated d…

The growth of photoautotrophic Euglena gracilis Z is strongly inhibited by manganese deficiency, whereas chlorophyll formation is not appreciably affected. The galactosyldiglyceride content of the manganese-deficient photo-autotrophic Euglena was about 40% lower on the basis of either chlorophyll content or dry weight. When dark-grown cultures of Euglena were grown photoheterotrophically in light sufficient for the greening of the cells, or photosynthesis, manganese deficiency resulted in a reduction of the cellular content of chlorophyll and galactosyldiglycerides to 40% of control values, in…

The oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) plays a critical role in the biogeochemical cycling of chromium, particularly in soils. This study investigated Cr(III) oxidation mediated by three strains of manganese-oxidizing bacteria: Pseudomonas putida MnB1, Brevundimonas diminuta MnO-2, and Pannonibacter phragmitetus MnO-3 through generating biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx). The MnB1-generated BioMnOx exhibited superior Cr(III) oxidation efficiency (82.00 %) compared with the BioMnOx generated by MnO-2 (2.50 %) and MnO-3 (3.26 %). Structural characterization (XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS) demonstrated that Mn…

Prepubertal exposure to low, but elevated levels of manganese (Mn) can induce increased secretions of puberty-related hormones resulting in precocious pubertal development in female rats. These events are due to an action of the element within the hypothalamus to induce the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Because of these prepubertal effects of Mn and because precocious puberty is a serious neuroendocrine disorder, we have assessed whether early life exposure to this environmental element is capable of precociously upregulating the expression of a select group of genes prev…

The antiknock additive methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) is an organic manganese(Mn) compound. Mn neurotoxicity caused by occupational Mn exposure (mostly inorganic MnCl2) is associated with motor and cognitive disturbances, referred to as Manganism. However, the impact of environmentally relevant Mn exposure on MMT-induced Manganism is poorly understood. In this investigation, we studied the effects of MMT on motor function and brain structure, and compared its effects with those of inorganic MnCl2. After adaptive feeding for 7 days, male and female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats i…

BACKGROUND: Manganism is a central nervous system disorder caused by toxic exposure to manganese. Manganism has been related to occupational exposures, liver diseases, prolonged parenteral nutrition, and abuse of illicit drugs. Initially manifested by a reversible neuropsychiatric syndrome (locura manganica), the main symptoms and signs of manganism are emotional lability, compulsive behavior and visual hallucinations. Locura manganica is followed by an irreversible extrapyramidal syndrome, the onset of which occurs years after chronic exposure.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize the regional distri…

Four experiments were conducted to obtain information on the manganese (Mn) status of ewes, doe rabbits and dairy cows with cystic ovaries. Manganese was not concentrated specifically in any one tissue or organ but the use of 54Mn has indicated that the isotope was retained by the liver for a longer time. Significantly lower (P less than 0.01) levels of Mn were observed in the liver, kidney and blood of pregnant ewes fed a synthetic diet containing low levels (5 ppm) of Mn than those that were supplemented with 60 ppm Mn. It would appear that the determination of blood Mn concentration would p…

Manganese porphyrins (MnPs), MnTE-2-PyP5+, MnTnHex-2-PyP5+ and MnTnBuOE-2-PyP5+, are superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetics and form a redox cycle between O2 and reductants, including ascorbic acid, ultimately producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). We previously found that MnPs oxidize hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to polysulfides (PS; H2Sn, n = 2-6) in buffer. Here, we examine the effects of MnPs for 24 h on H2S metabolism and PS production in HEK293, A549, HT29 and bone marrow derived stem cells (BMDSC) using H2S (AzMC, MeRho-AZ) and PS (SSP4) fluorophores. All MnPs decreased intracellular H2S production…

Manganese (Mn) is an important micronutrient for plant growth and development and sustains metabolic roles within different plant cell compartments. The metal is an essential cofactor for the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of the photosynthetic machinery, catalyzing the water-splitting reaction in photosystem II (PSII). Despite the importance of Mn for photosynthesis and other processes, the physiological relevance of Mn uptake and compartmentation in plants has been underrated. The subcellular Mn homeostasis to maintain compartmented Mn-dependent metabolic processes like glycosylation, ROS sca…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The manganese ion is used as an intracellular MR imaging contrast agent to study neuronal function in animal models, but it remains unclear whether manganese-enhanced MR imaging can be similarly useful in humans. Using mangafodipir (Teslascan, a chelated manganese-based contrast agent that is FDA-approved), we evaluated the dynamics of manganese enhancement of the brain and glandular structures in the rostral head and neck in healthy volunteers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We administered mangafodipir intravenously at a rate of 1 mL/minute for a total dose of 5 μmol/kg body…

Manganese (Mn) is an essential micronutrient that is not readily available to pathogens during infection due to an active host defense mechanism known as nutritional immunity. To overcome this nutrient restriction, bacteria utilize high-affinity transporters that allow them to compete with host metal-binding proteins. Despite the established role of Mn in bacterial pathogenesis, little is known about the relevance of Mn in the pathophysiology of E. faecalis. Here, we identified and characterized the major Mn acquisition systems of E. faecalis. We discovered that the ABC-type permease EfaCBA an…

Although manganese (Mn) is critical for the proper functioning of various metabolic enzymes and cofactors, excess Mn in the brain causes neurotoxicity. While the exact transport mechanism of Mn has not been fully understood, several importers and exporters for Mn have been identified over the past decade. In addition to Mn-specific transporters, it has been demonstrated that iron transporters can mediate Mn transport in the brain and peripheral tissues. However, while the expression of iron transporters is regulated by body iron stores, whether or not disorders of iron metabolism modify Mn hom…

UNLABELLED: Several species of the bacterial genus Shewanella are well-known dissimilatory reducers of manganese under anaerobic conditions. In fact, Shewanella oneidensis is one of the most well studied of all metal-reducing bacteria. In the current study, a number of Shewanella strains were tested for manganese-oxidizing capacity under aerobic conditions. All were able to oxidize Mn(II) and to produce solid dark brown manganese oxides. Shewanella loihica strain PV-4 was the strongest oxidizer, producing oxides at a rate of 20.3 mg/liter/day and oxidizing Mn(II) concentrations of up to 9 mM. …
