Emphysema and secondary pneumothorax in young adults smoking cannabis.

BACKGROUND: We observed a remarkable increase in the number of young patients who presented with lung emphysema and secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) at our institution for over a period of 30 months; most of them have a common history of marijuana abuse. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Seventeen young patients presented with spontaneous pneumothorax with bullous lung emphysema were systematically evaluated over a period of 30 months. All were regular marijuana smokers. Clinical history, chest X-ray, CT-scan, lung function test, and laboratory and histological examin

The prominence of smoking-related mortality among individuals with alcohol- or drug-use disorders.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Even though individuals with substance-use disorders have a high prevalence of tobacco smoking, surprisingly little is known about smoking-related mortality in these populations. The current retrospective cohort study aims to address this gap. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study sample included cohorts of individuals hospitalised in California between 1990 and 2005 with alcohol- (n = 509 422), cocaine- (n = 35 276), opioid- (n = 53 172), marijuana- (n = 15 995) or methamphetamine-use (n = 36 717) disorders. Death records were linked to inpatient data. Age-, race- and sex-adju

[Future medications for tobacco and cannabis dependence].

Worldwide more than 3 million deaths a year are attributable to smoking, and tobacco use is on the rise in developing countries. Consequently, smoking is one of the few causes of mortality that is increasing, with deaths projected to reach 10 million annually in 30-40 years. Cannabinoids, which are usually used in the form of marijuana, have become the most frequently used illicit drugs, but there is no pharmacological treatment for marijuana dependence. Although the dopaminergic system plays a critical role in reinforcing the effects of drugs of abuse, other neurotransmitter systems are also

Cardiovascular effects of marijuana.

More than four decades ago, the United States Surgeon General issued a warning regarding the medical problems of marijuana smoking, including cardiac toxicity. Since then, many reports have described atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, acute coronary syndromes, and cardiac arrest temporally related to marijuana use. The subjects were quite young, with no significant cardiovascular risk factors, with the only obvious trigger being marijuana use. Despite these strong signals, the drug is now legalized for recreational use in many states. We believe the time has come to conduct definiti

Orthopaedic surgery patients who use recreational marijuana have less pre-operative pain.

AIMS: To determine the baseline clinical characteristics of recreational marijuana users undergoing outpatient orthopaedic surgery. We hypothesized that patients who report marijuana use would have worse pain, function, and general health status. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nine-hundred and thirty-seven patients undergoing outpatient orthopaedic surgery were asked to fill out patient-reported outcome (PRO) tools. These PROs included the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information Systems (PROMIS) computer adaptive tests and legacy PROs unique to each patients' surgical site. RESULTS: Forty p

Marijuana Is Associated With a Hormonal Imbalance Among Several Habits Related to Male Infertility: A Retrospective Study.

Marijuana is one of the most consumed drugs worldwide. There is increasing evidence of an association between marijuana and male infertility. This study intends to assess the repercussion of marijuana smoking and other habits (sedentary lifestyle, alcohol, and tobacco use) in the testicular function of infertile men seeking andrological evaluation. A retrospective study was performed using medical records data of men aged 18-59 years from 2009 to 2017. Complete semen analyses, sperm functional tests, SHBG, and hormonal levels, testosterone-to-estradiol ratio (T/E2), and testis volume were eval

Committee Opinion Summary NO. 722: Marijuana Use During Pregnancy and Lactation.

Cannabis sativa (marijuana) is the illicit drug most commonly used during pregnancy. The self-reported prevalence of marijuana use during pregnancy ranges from 2% to 5% in most studies. A growing number of states are legalizing marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes, and its use by pregnant women could increase even further as a result. Because of concerns regarding impaired neurodevelopment, as well as maternal and fetal exposure to the adverse effects of smoking, women who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy should be encouraged to discontinue marijuana use. Smoking, Stress, and Health Risk Behaviors During the Early Phase of COVID-19 Lockdowns Among Residents of Flint, Michigan.

Food insecurity and smoking commonly co-occur in underserved populations, exacerbating health disparities. This study assesses smoking and its associations with mental health and health risk behaviors among residents of Flint, Michigan in the early phase of COVID lockdowns. The survey captured smoking status, mental health indicators, and health risk behaviors among 106 who had financial needs and limited mobility and received community nutritional services. Comparisons by demographics showed that those who lived alone, used marijuana, and had frequent alcohol drinking tended to smoke more tha

Marijuana use should not preclude consideration for kidney transplantation.

Transplant eligibility for tobacco and/or marijuana using candidates varies among transplant centers. This study compared the impact of marijuana use and tobacco use on kidney transplant recipient outcomes. Kidney transplant recipients at a single center from 2001 to 2015 were reviewed for outcomes of all-cause graft loss, infection, biopsy-proven acute rejection, and estimated glomerular filtration rate between four groups: marijuana-only users, marijuana and tobacco users, tobacco-only users, and nonusers. The cohort (N = 919) included 48 (5.2%) marijuana users, 45 (4.8%) marijuana and tobac

Attributes of heavy vs. occasional marijuana smokers in a college population.

We sought to assess whether college students who smoked marijuana heavily were distinguishable from students who had used the drug only occasionally. We compared 45 long-term heavy marijuana smokers (individuals who had smoked daily for at least 2 years) with 44 "occasional" smokers (individuals who had never smoked more than 10 times in a month at any time in their lives), drawn from the student populations at two Boston-area colleges. measures included a questionnaire covering a range of demographic, drug use, and subjective items; the Rand Mental Health Inventory; and both the Axis I and Ax

Association of electronic-cigarette, number of cigarettes, and marijuana use with high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) among men and women: A cross-sectional analysis of a nationally representative sample.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is associated with an increased risk of HPV infection. However, the use of e-cigarettes and marijuana, number of cigarettes, and serum cotinine concentrations in relation with HPV (6, 11, 16, 18) and high-risk HPV (16 or 18) infections in underserved and understudied populations remain poorly understood. METHODS: Data included 687 males and 664 females among whom 489 were White, 375 were Black and 342 were Hispanics from the NHANES 2013-2016 with HPV and high-risk HPV infections. Smoking history included current and past smokers, number of cigarettes, use of e-cigarettes,

Marijuana use and risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Previous laboratory investigations, case reports, and a hospital-based case-control study have suggested that marijuana use may be a risk factor for squamous cell head and neck cancer. We conducted a population-based case-control study to determine whether marijuana use is associated with the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Case subjects (n = 407) were 18-65-year-old residents of three counties in western Washington State who were newly diagnosed with OSCC from 1985 through 1995. Control subjects (n = 615), who were similar to the cases with respect to age and sex, were sel

Health aspects of cannabis.

Marijuana seems firmly established as another social drug in Western countries, regardless of its current legal status. Patterns of use vary widely. As with other social drugs, the pattern of use is critical in determining adverse effects on health. Perhaps the major area of concern about marijuana use is among the very young. Using any drug on a regular basis that alters reality may be detrimental to the psychosocial maturation of young persons. Chronic use of marijuana may stunt the emotional growth of youngsters. Evidence for an amotivational syndrome is largely based on clinical reports; w

Exploring Factors Shaping Tobacco and Marijuana Use Among Sexual Minority Adolescents.

PURPOSE: This study sought to identify the predominant factors associated with tobacco and marijuana/cannabis use among adolescents according to their sexual identity. METHODS: Using the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, we examined current use of e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and marijuana/cannabis vaping among adolescents. We used dominance analyses and logistic regression models to assess the relative importance of factors linked to tobacco and marijuana/cannabis use. The analyses were stratified by sexual identity (straight, sexual minorities, unsure) and grade levels (middle-school vs. hig

Opioid antagonism of cannabinoid effects: differences between marijuana smokers and nonmarijuana smokers.

In non-human animals, opioid antagonists block the reinforcing and discriminative-stimulus effects of Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), while in human marijuana smokers, naltrexone (50 mg) enhances the reinforcing and subjective effects of THC. The objective of this study was to test a lower, more opioid-selective dose of naltrexone (12 mg) in combination with THC. The influence of marijuana-use history and sex was also investigated. Naltrexone (0, 12 mg) was administered 30 min before oral THC (0-40 mg) or methadone (0-10 mg) capsules, and subjective effects, task performance, pupillary di
