Factors affecting the physical and mental health of older adults in China: The importance of marital status, child proximity, and gender.

Evidence is accumulating about the association between strong family ties and the emotional and physical welfare of older adults, and researchers have identified negative consequences of being unmarried, being childless, and/or living alone. These associations have been recognized in multiple contexts, including in Asia where living with a spouse and/or grown children has been shown in some studies to improve elderly well-being. Social support, especially family support, is expected to continue to be important where populations are aging and social safety nets are weak. Using longitudinal data

Emotional eating, marital status and history of physical abuse predict 2-year weight loss in weight loss surgery patients.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss surgery (WLS) is an effective weight loss treatment for individuals with severe obesity. Psychosocial factors can affect short-term WLS outcomes. This study sought to identify psychosocial predictors of medium-term outcomes. METHODS: In this prospective study, 250 consecutive WLS candidates were evaluated between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010. Each completed baseline medical, surgical, and psychological evaluations as part of standard of care. Two hundred and four patients had surgery (81.6%). Successful surgical outcome was defined as ≥50% excess weight loss t

Relationship between marital status and incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in a Brazilian rural population: The Baependi Heart Study.

Many factors influence the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Here, we investigated the associations between socio-demographic characteristics and familial history with the 5-year incidence of T2DM in a family-based study conducted in Brazil. T2DM was defined as baseline fasting blood glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL or the use of any hypoglycaemic drug. We excluded individuals with T2DM at baseline or if they did not attend two examination cycles. After exclusions, we evaluated a sample of 1,125 participants, part of the Baependi Heart Study (BHS). Mixed-effects logistic regression models were

Conflations of Marital Status and Sanity: Implicit Heterosexist Bias in Psychiatric Diagnosis in Physician-Dictated Charts at a Midwestern Medical Center.

This paper discusses the role of gender role conformity in psychiatric determinants of well-being after of the depathologization of homosexuality from the DSM. In order to examine the heterosexualizing of sanity in U.S. psychiatric and popular cultures, we analyze archived psychiatrist-dictated patient charts from outpatient psychiatric clinics from a Midwestern medical center (n = 45). We highlight ways physicians deployed heteronormative gender expectations to describe and treat women's and men's depressive illness and implicitly construed troubled female-male relationships and sexual encoun

Which is guilty in self-induced penile fractures: marital status, culture or geographic region? A case series and literature review.

Penile fracture is a well-recognized and relatively uncommon clinical entity. It was previously reported that the incidence of penile fracture varies according to various geographic regions. In order to determine whether marital status or culture other than geographic region is involved in the etiology of penile fracture in our country, the charts of 122 men diagnosed with penile fracture were retrospectively reviewed. Detailed history including cause, symptoms, country of origin and a single-question self-report of erectile dysfunction was used for all cases. Diagnosis of our cases was mainly

Rational and irrational fan beliefs and psychological distress in football fans: The moderating role of gender, marital status, and match outcome.

Sport fans can experience a variety of dysfunctional emotions and maladaptive behaviors, including anger, hatred, depression, anxiety, and violence. For many years, rational emotive behavioural therapy (REBT) has used the concepts of rational and irrational beliefs to explain the emotions and behaviours exhibited by different groups, such as athletes, students and employees. The current study examines the relationships between rational and irrational fan beliefs, and psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and stress), in football fans. It also investigates the moderating role of gender,

Melanoma and Matrimony: Retrospective Study of Demographics, Marital Status, and Clinical Features of Patients With Acral Melanoma at a Single Academic Center.

Acral melanoma (AM) is localized to the hands and feet including the palms, soles, fingers, toes, and nails, and is associated with a high degree of morbidity and mortality. It has a greater proportional incidence in non-White patients and is often diagnosed at later stages than other cutaneous melanomas. Our study aimed to analyze demographic and clinical features associated with AM to better inform screening and early detection. Demographic and clinical data of patients with histopathologically confirmed AM seen at Weill Cornell Medicine were collected (6/1/2005-7/20/2022). ANOVA and t-tests

The surprising role of marital status on sport second-screening: demographic influences during the 2022 world cup viewing in Israel.

To better understand what characterizes those who use a second screen while watching sport, the study examine a variety of demographic factors influencing browsing device trends before, during ("second screen"), and after sports games. It does so by utilizing survey data from Israeli viewers of the 2022 World Cup using a convenience sample (N = 242). In line with our hypotheses, those with higher education and higher reported income were more likely to browse devices for information around and during games. Against our hypothesis, young adults were less likely to engage in browsing before, dur
