Epithelial cadherin disassociates from the lateral plasma membrane of uterine epithelial cells throughout pregnancy in a marsupial.

The uterine luminal epithelium is the first site of contact between fetal and maternal tissues during therian pregnancy and must undergo specialised changes for implantation of the blastocyst to be successful. These changes, collectively termed the plasma membrane transformation (PMT), allow the blastocyst to attach to the uterine epithelium preceding the formation of a placenta. There are similarities in the morphological and molecular changes occurring in live-bearing eutherian species during the PMT studied so far. Similar cellular remodelling occurs in a marsupial species, the fat-tailed d

The marsupial Didelphis albiventris is an improbable host of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in an endemic area of paracoccidioidomycosis in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

To determine whether Didelphis albiventris is naturally infected with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, 20 specimens of this mammal were studied by both direct cultivation of their viscera (spleen, liver and lungs) and by inoculation of Swiss mice by the intraperitoneal route with a suspension of fragments of these viscera. No fungal growth or structures similar to this fungus were detected. Probably D. albiventris is not frequently infected with P. brasiliensis.

Immunocytochemical study of the endocrine pancreas in the grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus).

The endocrine pancreas of the grey kangaroo, Macropus fuliginosus, was investigated by means of immunocytochemistry using the PAP method on the same section at the light- and electron-microscopic levels. Semithin plastic sections were stained individually with primary antibodies for insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide (PP), and then photographed. Sections were osmicated, re-embedded in BEEM capsules, and ultrathin sections made and examined. The same labelled cells as in the semithin sections were localised in the thin sections, photographs taken and the morphology of se

Light- and electron-microscopic study of the microbial deposits present on the tongue and dentition of macropods.

The dental deposits in the kangaroos and wallabies were similar to human calculus with lysed bacterial cell remnants embedded in previously mineralized areas. The surface of the microbial deposits in contact with the enamel showed: (a) triangular structures 3-5 micron deep and 4-5 micron wide at their base repeating every 4 or 5 micron which probably occupied the remnants of Tomes processes which in macropods do not flatten out; (b) irregular, short (1 micron) projections that probably occupied the inter-prismatic areas. Few organisms were observed on the anterior or dorsal surfaces of the ton

The structure of the cells lining the stomach of the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii).

The stomach of the tammar may be divided into cardiac, "oesophageal", fundic and pyloric regions. In the cells of the cardiac region (which occupy 65% of the stomach) at least three types of mucous droplet are present. The stratified squamous "oesophageal" region occupies 20% of the stomach and the fundic and pyloric regions make up the remaining 15%. The cellular structure of the three last named regions seems to be similar to that described for other monogastric mammals. Endocrine cells were found in all glandular regions.

Studies on the migratory route of Paragonimus siamensis in the bandicoot (Bandicota indica).

The migration route and the development of P. siamensis obtained from S. juliae and S. germaini were studied in B. indica. The infection rates of P. siamensis in these 2 species of crabs were 19.7% and 21.4% respectively. Worms were recovered in the abdominal cavity, pleural cavity and lungs on day 12, 16 and 30 respectively after oral infection. Worms became mature and laid eggs on day 47 after infection, but their size still increased considerably. The average egg output was found to be 144 eggs/gm faeces/worm or 443 eggs/day/worm. The average recovery rate of P. siamensis in the experimenta

The role of the Tasmanian devil in the epizootiology of ovine cysticercosis and echinococcosis.

Tasmanian devils were fed infective cystic material of Taenia ovis, T. hydatigena and Echinococcus granulosus and later killed and examined for adult tapeworms. No infections with T. ovis were found after feeding 23 cysts to 8 devils. T. hydatigena were recovered from 5 to 41 devils and 10 worms established after feeding 417 cysticerci. No E. granulosus were recovered from any of 3 devils. Specimens of T. hydatigena appeared to develop as well in devils as in dogs. From these and previous results devils could be successful hosts to T. hydatigena and T. ovis. A survey of 320 devils failed to de

Creation of an MRI-Based Three-Dimensional Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus) Brain Atlas and Linking Brain Morphometry to Wombat Behaviour.

Marsupials lack a corpus callosum; in its place Diprodontia have a fasciculus aberrans connecting the hemispheres. However, despite this uniqueness, the realm of marsupial brain anatomy remains largely unexplored, especially through the lens of modern imaging techniques. Currently, there is a glaring absence of publicly available reference materials to explore normal brain morphometry to aid in defining and investigating marsupial neurodegenerative brain diseases. This study segmented magnetic resonance images of a wombat brain with an overall size of 41,745.46 mm3 to create a three-dimensiona

Preliminary estimate of reference intraocular pressure values in eastern barred bandicoots (Perameles gunnii).

BACKGROUND: The Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Perameles gunnii) is a small endangered marsupial that primarily inhabits the grasslands and grassy woodlands of southeastern Australia. There are currently no reported values for intraocular pressures in Eastern Barred Bandicoots (EBBs). AIM: This study aimed to provide preliminary reference values for intraocular pressures in EBBs. METHODS: 13 EBBs from a wild population on French Island, Victoria were humanely trapped and examined with light local restraint. All animals were healthy and had no detectable surface ocular pathology on slit exam biomi

Pulmonary lesions associated with the presence of adiaspores apparently produced by a novel Emmonsiellopsis genotype in wombats.

Australia is home to bare-nosed, northern hairy-nosed and southern hairy-nosed wombats. Adiaspores have been noted in the lungs of all 3 species and severe pneumonia has been characterized in 2 northern hairy-nosed wombats associated with intralesional adiaspores produced by a novel Emmonsiellopsis species. Similar organisms have been observed in the lungs of bare-nosed and southern hairy-nosed wombats. In the current report, DNA amplification and sequencing demonstrated that an adiaspore producing fungus in 3 bare-nosed wombats is a genetic variant or sister species to the Emmonsiellopsis sp.

Cortical activity emerges in region-specific patterns during early brain development.

The development of precise neural circuits in the brain requires spontaneous patterns of neural activity prior to functional maturation. In the rodent cerebral cortex, patchwork and wave patterns of activity develop in somatosensory and visual regions, respectively, and are present at birth. However, whether such activity patterns occur in noneutherian mammals, as well as when and how they arise during development, remain open questions relevant for understanding brain formation in health and disease. Since the onset of patterned cortical activity is challenging to study prenatally in eutheria

Host, environment, and anthropogenic factors drive landscape dynamics of an environmentally transmitted pathogen: Sarcoptic mange in the bare-nosed wombat.

Understanding the spatial dynamics and drivers of wildlife pathogens is constrained by sampling logistics, with implications for advancing the field of landscape epidemiology and targeted allocation of management resources. However, visually apparent wildlife diseases, when combined with remote-surveillance and distribution modelling technologies, present an opportunity to overcome this landscape-scale problem. Here, we investigated dynamics and drivers of landscape-scale wildlife disease, using clinical signs of sarcoptic mange (caused by Sarcoptes scabiei) in its bare-nosed wombat (BNW; Vomb

A review of the nematode assemblage of the Australian bandicoot, Isoodon macrourus (Peramelidae), from material held in the South Australian Museum with the description of Sprattellus cassonei n. sp. (Mackerrastrongylidae).

A total of 235 vials of nematodes held in the Australian Helminthological Collection of the South Australian Museum from 125 individuals of Isoodon macrourus were examined. The nematode assemblage of I. macrourus, comprising 12 families, including 16 genera and 23 identified species, was compared with the sympatric bandicoot species Perameles nasuta, 20 identified species (Sorensen's index of similarity 0.56) and P. pallescens, 12 identified species (Sorensen's index 0.51). Sprattellus cassonei n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by having a synlophe with 7-8 ridges with the anterior ve

Detection of antibodies against Leptospira spp in free-living marsupials caught in the Eastern Amazon.

INTRODUCTION: Serological surveys are important to assess the health status of wild animals. In this study, antibodies against Leptospira spp, causal agents of leptospirosis, were detected in free-living marsupials in the State of Pará, Brazil. METHODS: Nineteen blood samples collected from marsupials in the municipalities of Peixe-Boi, Viseu, and Castanhal were subjected to microscopic agglutination tests. RESULTS: In total, 36.8% (7/19) of samples were positive, and two exhibited co-agglutination. The most frequent serovars were Icterohaemorrhagiae (60%; 3/5), Panama (20%; 1/5), and Nupezo

Urban environments alter parasite fauna, weight and reproductive activity in the quenda (Isoodon obesulus).

Some wildlife species are capable of surviving in urbanised environments. However, the implications of urbanisation on wildlife health, and public health regarding zoonoses, are often unknown. Quenda (syn. southern brown bandicoots, Isoodon obesulus) survive in many areas of Perth, Australia, despite urbanisation. This study investigated differences in gastrointestinal and macroscopic ecto-parasitic infections, morphometrics and reproductive status between bushland and urban dwelling quenda. 287 quenda in the greater Perth region were captured and sampled for faeces (to detect gastrointestinal

Reproductive Disorders of Marsupials.

Marsupial reproduction differs significantly in anatomy and physiology from that of placental mammals. The gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts empty into a cloaca. Reproductive parameters include gestation and pouch time, as the fetus develops outside of the uterus. Captive marsupials discussed include sugar gliders), short-tailed opossums, Virginia opossums, and Tammar and Bennett's wallabies. Common disease conditions include joey eviction, pouch infections, mastitis, metritis, prostatitis, penile necrosis, and neoplasia. Common surgeries include penile amputation, castration, and ovario-

Foramen magnum position in bipedal mammals.

The anterior position of the human foramen magnum is often explained as an adaptation for maintaining balance of the head atop the cervical vertebral column during bipedalism and the assumption of orthograde trunk postures. Accordingly, the relative placement of the foramen magnum on the basicranium has been used to infer bipedal locomotion and hominin status for a number of Mio-Pliocene fossil taxa. Nonetheless, previous studies have struggled to validate the functional link between foramen magnum position and bipedal locomotion. Here, we test the hypothesis that an anteriorly positioned fora

Hammer-toothed 'marsupial skinks' from the Australian Cenozoic.

Extinct species of Malleodectes gen. nov. from Middle to Late Miocene deposits of the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland, Australia are enigmatic, highly specialized, probably snail-eating marsupials. Dentally, they closely resemble a bizarre group of living heterodont, wet forest scincid lizards from Australia (Cyclodomorphus) that may well have outcompeted them as snail-eaters when the closed forests of central Australia began to decline. Although there are scincids known from the same Miocene deposits at Riversleigh, these are relatively plesiomorphic, generalized feed
