Unilateral hypertrophy of the masseter muscle is a very rare pathological entity in children. Its etiology is uncertain and it requires a high degree of suspicion, as it must be differentiated from other conditions of the masseter area. As there are few pathological studies to elucidate this condition, we report a rare case of unilateral masseter muscle hypertrophy in a 16-year-old female patient with gradual onset of a painless swelling in the posterior left cheek which caused facial asymmetry with repercussions on the patient's self-image. The diagnosis of unilateral masseter muscle hypertro

BACKGROUND: Haemodynamics during recovery after teeth clenching is poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: To clarify factors influencing tissue blood oxygenation recovery after clenching with altered muscle activity and duration, but constant total muscle activity.
METHODS: The following tasks were based on constant maximum voluntary clenching (100% MVC): (a) 50% MVC × 30 seconds; (b) 30% MVC × 50 seconds; and (c) 10% MVC × 150 seconds. Tissue oxygenated (oxy-Hb), deoxygenated (deoxy-Hb) and total haemoglobin (total-Hb) were recorded using near-infrared spectroscopy in the masseter muscle during reco

OBJECTIVE: Myofascial pain in temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) is evoked by various factors, including edematous change. We investigated whether the pain pattern is related to edematous change by using T2 mapping generated by magnetic resonance imaging to detect water content in the tissue.
STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and five patients diagnosed with TMDs, with or without unilateral masseter muscle pain, were divided into 6 groups according to their pain experience: pain on compression (23 cases), pain on movement (13 cases), spontaneous pain (4 cases), pain on compression and movement

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study is to investigate if changes in the oxygen saturation of masseter muscle during a chewing task can differentiate patients with myogenic temporomandibular disorders (TMD) from healthy subjects and if these differences are related to the gravity of the disorder and to the orofacial myofunctional status.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve women with moderate TMD (TMD group; 37 ± 16 years) and ten healthy control women (CTRL group 24 ± 5 years) participated. Validated protocols were used to evaluate the severity of TMD and the orofacial myofunctional statu

The latencies of the simple reaction-time responses for opening and closing of the jaws in response to taps and pushes on teeth and lip shocks were measured in human adults. The reaction times were scored from both the integrated electromyographic (EMG) signal in individual trials, and from the cumulative sum (CUSUM) of the averaged EMG response to 50 stimuli. The mean reaction times for both closing and opening were about 80-90 ms for taps and electrical lip shocks, and about 140 ms for push, measured from the CUSUMs. The reaction times in individual trials were difficult to measure from the

The human masseter muscle is one of the primary muscles responsible for mastication and mandibular movement; however, its intrinsic mechanical properties remain insufficiently characterized. In this experimental study, the nonlinear, viscoelastic, and history-dependent behaviour of the human masseter muscle was investigated using ex vivo uniaxial cyclic tensile tests. Masseter muscle samples prepared from fresh and formalin-preserved cadavers were tested under two loading protocols: a stepwise stress-relaxation protocol with progressively increasing stretch levels and a constant stretch protoc

Mandibular angle osteotomy with outer cortex grinding is an effective cosmetic procedure for correcting square faces. However, morphological changes in the mandible may also cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the morphological stabilization of the TMJ and changes in masseter muscle thickness after mandibular angle osteotomy to evaluate the safety of the procedure. Data from patients who underwent mandibular angle osteotomy with outer cortex grinding between January 2016 and January 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Preoperative and lo

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia has been identified as a potential negative prognostic factor in cancer patients. In this study, our objective was to investigate the relationship between the assessment method for sarcopenia using the masseter muscle volume measured on computed tomography (CT) images and the life expectancy of patients with oral cancer. We also developed a learning model using deep learning to automatically extract the masseter muscle volume and investigated its association with the life expectancy of oral cancer patients.
METHODS: To develop the learning model for masseter muscle volu

Skeletal muscle hemodynamics, including that in jaw muscles, is an important in their functions and is modulated by aging. Marked blood flow increases mediated by parasympathetic vasodilation may be important for blood flow in the masseter muscle (MBF); however, the relationship between parasympathetic vasodilation and aging is unclear. We examined the effect of aging on parasympathetic vasodilation evoked by trigeminal afferent inputs and their mechanisms by investigating the MBF during stimulation of the lingual nerve (LN) in young and old urethane-anesthetized and vago-sympathectomized rats

Current pain classifications use 1.0-kg palpation of the masseter muscle to distinguish between "pain patients" and "healthy controls" but a thorough understanding of the normal physiological responses to various somatosensory stimuli is lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate somatosensory function of the skin over the masseter muscle in healthy participants that were divided into a masseter pain prone group (MPP) (n = 22) and non-MPP group (n = 22), according to the response to a 1.0-kg palpation. Quantitative sensory testing (QST) was performed at the skin above the right masseter

INTRODUCTION: Low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is a distinctive variant of fibrosarcoma. We recently experienced a rare case of low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma arising in the masseter muscle.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old Korean woman with a large growing mass in her right parotid gland area for 1 year visited our clinic. Complete removal of the tumor was achieved by parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. The tumor measured over 4cm with pathologic findings compatible with low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma.
CONCLUSIONS: Low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is an extremely rare tumor, and report of

BACKGROUND: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic insidious disease of the oral mucosa, commonly seen in South East Asia. It occurs mainly due to the habit of quid or gutkha chewing. There is a clear dose dependent relationship between gutkha chewing and development of OSMF, also due to continuous chewing for larger intervals of time unnecessary forces are exerted on the muscles mainly the masseter muscle. So, the present study was done to evaluate the thickness of masseter muscle in OSMF patients and to compare it with normal patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study involved

The exact mechanism underlying chronic masseter muscle pain, a conspicuous symptom in temporomandibular disorder, remains unclear. We investigated whether expression of P2X3 receptor (P2X3R) is involved in mechanical hyperalgesia after contraction of masseter muscle (CMM). As compared with sham rats, the head-withdrawal threshold (HWT) to mechanical pressure stimulation of masseter muscle (MM) (but not after similar stimulation of facial skin) was significantly lower, and IL-1β level was significantly higher, in CMM rats on day 7 after CMM. The mean percentage of FG-labeled P2X3R-positive neur

Masseter muscle rigidity during general anesthesia is considered an early warning sign of a possible episode of malignant hyperthermia. The decision whether to continue or discontinue the procedure depends on the urgency of the surgery and severity of masseter muscle rigidity. Here, we describe a case of severe masseter muscle rigidity (jaw of steel) after succinylcholine (Sch) administration during general anesthetic management for rigid bronchoscopic removal of a tracheal foreign body. Anesthesia was continued uneventfully with propofol infusion while all facilities were available to detect

Metastatic tumors to the head from infraclavicular primaries are relatively uncommon. The vast majority of primary tumors that metastasize to the head originate from the lung and breast. Tumors metastatic to the masseter are exceedingly rare with only one other case being reported in the literature. The case of a 34-year-old woman with a history of surgically-treated small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix is presented. This case and our review of the literature illustrates the unusual nature of metastatic patterns in the head and their diagnostic complexity. Masses localized to the buccoma
