The use of a contact Nd:YAG laser scalpel during radical and modified radical mastectomy was evaluated in 18 patients with carcinoma of the breast. The laser scalpel performed well as a haemostatic tool, the associated mean blood loss for modified radical mastectomy being 132 ml. Operating time, operative blood loss, laser energy required and postoperative wound drainage were all related to patient obesity, correlating significantly with body weight and/or breast weight. A retrospective study is presented on 225 selected patients with local primary carcinoma of the breast treated from 1963 to 1973 at the Surgical Clinic of the Cantonal Hospital, St. Gallen, Switzerland. For about three quarters of a century, radical mastectomy was considered standard initial treatment for invasive breast cancer. The treatment of potentially curable carcinoma of the breast has changed from one operation, radical mastectomy, to a flexible approach. Serosanguinous drainage after mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection has traditionally been treated with the temporary use of closed suction drainage catheters. Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) consists of extensive necrotic ulceration with bluish and purplish red margins. This disease is often associated with ulcerative colitis, systemic, hematologic or rheumatic diseases. However post-surgical idiopathic PG can occur. One post-mastectomy case is reported. PG can first be suspected on clinical appearance and the lack of a specific etiology. PG is a diagnosis of exclusion that is made only after other possibilities have been ruled out. The treatment is surgical excision and systemic corticosteroids.

1107 cases of lymphedema of the ipsilateral arm (27%) were found in 4011 female breast cancer patients suffered from 4101 breast cancer, seen in the Bad Trissl hospital between 1972 and 1990.
