Differential Associations of Adverse Childhood Experience on Maternal Health.

INTRODUCTION: The current study examined whether three distinct antecedent factors related to maternal adverse childhood experiences were differentially associated with maternal health and psychosocial outcomes in the antepartum period. It was hypothesized that all three adverse childhood experience factors would be positively associated with poor health prior to pregnancy, poor reproductive health history, and health complications and psychosocial difficulties during pregnancy. METHODS: Data from 1,994 women (mean age=30.87 years) and their infants were collected from a prospective longitudi

Measuring pregnancy care: towards better maternal and child health.

BACKGROUND: Obstetrics remains the largest medico-legal liability in healthcare. Neither an increasing awareness of patient safety nor a long tradition of reporting obstetric outcomes have reduced either rates of medical error or obstetric litigation. International debate continues about the best approaches to measuring and improving patient safety. In this study, we set out to assess the feasibility and utility of measuring the process of maternity care provision rather than care outcomes. AIMS: To report the development, application and results of a tool designed to measure the process of m

Angiogenic biomarkers in pregnancy: defining maternal and fetal health.

We review diagnostic and predictive roles of the angiogenic proteins placental growth factor, soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1, and soluble endoglin in preeclampsia, and their association with future cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and breast cancer. Specific patterns of these proteins represent preeclamptic prediction markers and combined with maternal and clinical characteristics, the predictive values increase. Women experiencing preeclampsia have increased risks of developing cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, and a decreased risk of breast cancer. High placental growth factor conce

Maternal and child health epidemic-assistance investigations, 1946-2005.

In this article, the authors focus on epidemic-assistance investigations that dealt with maternal and child health problems, including unintended and adolescent pregnancy and family planning; international reproductive health surveys among refugees; pregnancy outcomes, including abortion, maternal mortality, infant mortality, and birth defects; leukemia; and Reye syndrome. During 1946-2005, a total of 1,969 investigations had sufficient data to classify them as possibly related to maternal and child health and were characterized by distinctive periods. Those related to family planning, pregnan

Health, hygiene and maternal education: evidence from The Gambia.

The paper explores the ways in which women's education influences domestic hygiene practices and use of health care services in a traditional agricultural village in The Gambia. The "environment of health" is one of poverty, high morbidity and low levels of female literacy. A detailed household survey was undertaken in the rainy season when agricultural work is demanding of people's time and energy and morbidity rates are high. Mothers with and without formal education and with at least one child under 5 were included in the study. Small differences were found between the educated and uneducat

Effects of Maternal Vitamin D Supplementation on Childhood Health.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of health issues in the offspring. Accordingly, recent Endocrine Society guidelines strongly support supplementation in pregnancy, also underlining that without consensus on optimal maternal vitamin D levels, routine screening is currently irrelevant. Knowledge of organ-specific effects of vitamin D and its association with maternal vitamin D status may aid in optimizing vitamin D supplementation. This systematic review outlines the proposed next-generation effects of vitamin D supplementation ≥400 IU/d and explores whe

Maternal health and incarceration: advancing pregnancy justice through research.

This paper will review the state of the science on maternal health and incarceration. We will provide a historical context on women, pregnancy, and mothers as it relates to mass incarceration, considering both structural racism and reproductive justice. We will discuss existing research that documents care, treatment, and outcomes of individuals who are incarcerated while pregnant or postpartum in the United States. We will discuss the implications of carceral exposure on birthing people and their families. By synthesizing current research and relevant policies, we will identify gaps that will

Maternal-Foetal/Infant Interactions-Gut Microbiota and Immune Health.

In recent years, the number of scientific publications on the role of intestinal microbiota in shaping human health, as well as the occurrence of intestinal dysbiosis in various disease entities, has increased dynamically. However, there is a gap in comprehensively understanding the factors influencing a child's gut microbiota. This review discusses the establishment of gut microbiota and the immunological mechanisms regulating children's microbiota, emphasising the importance of prioritising the development of appropriate gut microbiota in a child from the planning stages of pregnancy. The da

Consequences of Maternal Vitamin D Deficiency on Newborn Health.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Maternal-fetal gestational pathology is one of the biggest challenges in the field of health at this moment. The current study is designed to determine the effects of vitamin D on pregnancy, starting with the idea that impairment of vitamin D status is thought to be correlated with impairment of the newborn's health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we tried to establish the link between vitamin D deficiency and maternal characteristics and also how it impacted the clinical status of the newborn. We analyzed a group of 260 patients: 130 pregnant w

Long-Term Effects of Fertility Treatments on Maternal Health.

Background The long-term health effects of assisted reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and hormonal therapies, remain poorly understood. This highlights the need to investigate potential chronic conditions that may arise following treatment. Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of fertility treatments on maternal health, with a focus on the incidence of chronic conditions and overall health outcomes in women who have undergone such treatments. Methodology This cross-sectional study included 180 women, aged 20-45, who had

Prioritizing Maternal Mental Health in Addressing Morbidity and Mortality.

IMPORTANCE: The rate of maternal mortality in the United States is 2-fold to 3-fold greater than that in other high-income countries. While many national initiatives have been developed to combat maternal mortality, these efforts often fail to include mental illness. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the underrecognized contribution of mental illness to maternal mortality, which is nearly double that of postpartum hemorrhage. EVIDENCE REVIEW: A topic outline was developed to include challenges in measuring perinatal mental conditions and mortality rates; contributions of social determinants of health

Ambient air pollution and maternal cardiovascular health in pregnancy.

In this review, we summarise the current epidemiological and experimental evidence on the association of ambient (outdoor) air pollution exposure and maternal cardiovascular health during pregnancy. This topic is of utmost clinical and public health importance as pregnant women represent a potentially susceptible group due to the delicate balance of the feto-placental circulation, rapid fetal development and tremendous physiological adaptations to the maternal cardiorespiratory system during pregnancy.Several meta-analyses including up to 4 245 170 participants provide robust evidence that air

Impact of Adverse Gestational Milieu on Maternal Cardiovascular Health.

Cardiovascular disease affects 1% to 4% of the nearly 4 million pregnancies in the United States each year and is the primary cause of pregnancy-related mortality. Adverse pregnancy outcomes are associated with cardiovascular complications during pregnancy persisting into the postpartum period. Recently, investigations have identified an altered sex hormone milieu, such as in the case of hyperandrogenism, as a causative factor in the development of gestational cardiovascular dysfunction. The mechanisms involved in the development of cardiovascular disease in postpartum women are largely unknow

Impact of maternal substance use on offspring's cardiovascular health.

Substance use (SU) during pregnancy is on the rise, posing significant risks to the developing fetus. The adverse impact of maternal alcohol and nicotine use during the perinatal period on offspring health has been well established, including their associations with adverse cardiovascular health in offspring. However, limited studies examine the impact of other well-known SU utilized during pregnancy on offspring's cardiovascular health. This review summarizes the proposed mechanism of action of four commonly utilized substances: cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, and opioids, and their card
