Factors affecting maxillary sinus pneumatization following posterior maxillary tooth extraction.

PURPOSE: The aims of the present study were 1) to quantitatively evaluate the extent of sinus pneumatization and 2) to determine the factors affecting sinus pneumatization. METHODS: Based on implant treatment records, a list of patients who underwent implant placement on the posterior maxilla was obtained. Among them, patients with pre-extraction and post-extraction (before implant placement) panoramic radiographs were selected. After excluding radiographs with low resolution and image distortion, the radiographs before and after extraction were superimposed using computer software. Subsequen

[Maxillary sinus floor wall typing and three-dimensional finite element modelling of maxillary sinus internal elevation].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the equivalent stress and displacement of maxillary sinus floor mucosa by three-dimensional finite element analysis under different types of maxillary sinus floor. METHODS: Three-dimensional finite element models of three different maxillary sinus floor shapes (shallow concave, deep concave and convex) were established by three-dimensional reconstruction of maxillary sinus bones and mucosa. The process of applying dynamic impact load to the maxillary sinus floor was simulated by using the ejector during maxillary sinus lifting operation, and the biomechanical characterist

Sinus Savvy: Exploring the Current Techniques of Maxillary Sinus Augmentation.

Sinus ridge augmentation is a surgical procedure aimed at increasing the volume of bone in the posterior maxilla to permit successful dental implant placement. The current review article presents an overview of various techniques used for sinus ridge augmentation, including the lateral window technique, crestal approach, transalveolar technique, and piezoelectric osteotomy. The article examines the advantages and limitations of each technique, such as invasiveness, surgical difficulty, and the requirement for additional procedures. Additionally, the article discusses the factors that influence

Dimensional changes in the sinus membrane following maxillary sinus augmentation.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study was to measure the sinus membrane's dimensional changes following maxillary sinus augmentation via a lateral approach, and to examine the variables affecting changes in the membrane's thickness. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Sixty-six sinuses corresponding to 50 patients (15 males and 35 females) who underwent lateral wall maxillary sinus augmentation (34 unilateral and 16 bilateral) were retrospectively evaluated. The sinus membrane thickness was measured on cross-sectional cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans which were performed prior to and 9 t

Maxillary sinus atelectasis (silent sinus syndrome): treatment with balloon sinuplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillary sinus atelectasis is a form of chronic rhinosinusitis of uncertain aetiology. Previously, the conventional treatment for this condition has been standard endoscopic surgery. There are no reports in the literature of successful treatment using balloon sinuplasty. METHODS: A case of a patient with right maxillary sinus atelectasis is presented, who was treated using the balloon sinuplasty technique. RESULTS: The patient's right maxillary sinus atelectasis was successfully treated using balloon sinuplasty. Three-month follow-up evaluation documented retention of the remo

Maxillary Sinus Mucocele With Fungal Ball.

Mucocele is a benign, expansile, and oppressive lesion, more common in the frontal and ethmoid sinus and less in the maxillary sinus. Sinus mucocele mainly causes cheek swelling pain and nasal obstruction. In some cases, the paranasal mucocele grows large enough to compress periorbital structures and lead to impaired vision. Generally, mucocele is full of simple mucus, but pathogens can be found if co-infected, which means a poor prognosis. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is an effective treatment for this disease. Here, the authors report a case that a mucocele occurred in the maxillary s

Endoscopic Management of Maxillary Sinus Schwannoma.

Schwannomas are benign tumors originate from nerve sheath. In this article, the authors aimed to share our experience and review the literature on endonasal endoscopic intervention for a maxillary sinus schwannoma. A 30-year-old Caucasian female patient applying to ophthalmology clinic due to exophthalmos and proptosis in her left eye for the last 6 months. A well-defined mass was detected in left maxillary sinus that was filling and expanding the sinus. Endoscopic biopsy from the patient was reported as ancient schwannoma. The encapsulated mass was completely removed by performing a combined

Prelacrimal Approach to Maxillary Sinus Pathology.

BACKGROUND: Access to the anterior, lateral, inferior, and inferomedial maxillary sinus has been a limitation of the middle meatal antrostomy. Expanded techniques such as the modified medial maxillectomy provide access to many of these areas but require remucosalization, and crusting can occur during the recovery phase. The prelacrimal approach (PLA) offers direct 0° endoscope access to these areas. Additionally, PLA can preserve the nasolacrimal duct and mucosal coverage. OBJECTIVES: We describe the current surgical technique and outcomes of PLA patients. METHODS: Consecutive adult patients

Maxillary Sinus Ameloblastoma: Transnasal Endoscopic Management.

Ameloblastoma (AM) is a slow growing and aggressive benign tumor with an odontogenic epithelial origin arising from the mandible or maxilla. The odontogenic neoplasm invades local tissues asymptomatically and accounts for 1% of oral tumors and over 10% of odontogenic tumors. A 64-year-old man with a history of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) undergoing a revision image-guided endoscopic sinus surgery was found to have a fibrous mass suspicious of malignancy projecting inferolaterally and attached to the floor of the left maxillary sinus. Diagnostic biopsies were taken, and additional sur

Giant complex odontoma in maxillary sinus.

In this manuscript, we present a rare case report of giant complex odontoma in the maxillary sinus, where the applied therapy included complete excision of the lesion with a conservative approach. Odontomas are also called benign growth abnormalities or hamartomas. They represent a more common type of odontogenic tumor and are related to various disorders such as bad dental placements, expansion, increased volumetric bone, and no eruption of permanent teeth. Usually they have an asymptomatic evolutionary course. The etiologic factors, although obscure, are related to local trauma, infection, a

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis of Maxillary sinus.

Langerhan cell histiocytosis is a rare disease and usually occurs in paediatric age group. This disease may involve single or multiple organs system and has an unpredictable course of disease. The involvement of head and neck region are almost 90% of cases, however maxillary sinus involvement is very rare. We report a case of 2 year old boy presented with multi organ LCH (orbit, skull, sinus and liver). The mainstay treatment for this high risk multi organ LCH group is chemotherapy. Unfortunately, although with the advancement of treatment, their mortality rate is still high.

[Maxillary sinus septa. Prevalence and anatomy].

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus septa may complicate sinus elevation procedures, especially when they are not diagnosed prior to surgery. The authors had for aim to review published data, to analyze the etiology, the prevalence, the localization, and the size of maxillary sinus septa, and to determine what were the best preoperative radiological examinations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Medline search was made with keywords such as "maxillary sinus anatomy, maxillary sinus augmentation, maxillary sinus septa, sinus graft/complications, dental implants". The search was limited to studies published i

Maxillary sinus disease: diagnosis and treatment.

The maxillary sinus is the paranasal sinus that impacts most on the work of the dentist as they will often be required to make a diagnosis in relation to orofacial pain that may be sinogenic in origin. Maxillary sinus disease is often coincidentally observed on radiographs, and dentists often have to make a diagnosis and plan treatment based on the interpretation of the image. This paper aims to guide the dental professional through some of the disease processes involving the paranasal sinuses and in particular the maxillary sinus. The outcome is to encourage comprehensive history taking and e

Maxillary sinus textiloma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Textilomas have been reported in many locations. We report the first case of textiloma located in the maxillary sinus that mimicked a sinus cyst recurrence on computed tomography images. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old Caucasian man was referred for persistent infection of the right maxillary sinus. A maxillary sinus benign cyst had been removed three months before. Computed tomography showed a sinus opacity evoking a cyst recurrence. A new operation was planned to remove the cyst by a Caldwell-Luc approach. After excision of very thick fibrous tissue, a compress was discovered

[Radiologic picture of maxillary sinus aspergilloma].

INTRODUCTION: Mycotic infection of paranasal sinus could be the etiological factor of chronic sinusitis. The increase in number of fungal sinusitis cases have been reported recently among nonimmunocompromised patient after endodontic treatment of maxillary teeth. Nonspecific clinical signs and incorrect radiologic pictures interpretation as well as loss of therapeutic standards seems to be the cause of false negative diagnosis and difficulties in treatment of fungal sinusitis. AIM OF THE STUDY: Clinical and radiological picture of maxillary sinus aspergillosis was described in this paper. MA

Maxillary sinus septa: a systematic review.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality in elderly patients. While coronary heart disease (CHD) morbidity and mortality have decreased over the last 25 years, the percentage reduction in elderly patients is nearly 50% lower than that for the general adult population. Therefore, aggressive primary and secondary prevention of CHD is imperative for our society, and hyperlipidaemia remains the major modifiable risk factor in the elderly population. However, there appears to be a reluctance among practitioners to treat hyperlipidaemia in elderly patients, a bias that is partic
