The objective of this study was to report outcomes for 19 consecutive patients with SMARCB1 (INI-1)-deficient sinonasal carcinoma. Patients were treated from 2014 to 2021 and followed for a median of 22.3 months. The median overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were 31.8 and 9.9 months, respectively. Patients with nasal cavity or maxillary sinus tumors had 84% better disease-specific survival (DSS) (hazard ratio [HR], 0.136; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.028-0.66; p = .005) and 71% better DFS (HR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.097-0.84; p = .041) than patients with other sinonasal sites. Nasopharyngeal angiofibromas are benign and vascular neoplasms, which originate characteristically in the posterior lateral wall of the nasopharynx. They account for less than 0.5% of all head and neck tumours. Although angiofibromas extend beyond the nasopharynx usually, they rarely originate outside the nasopharynx. Reports of primary extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas have appeared sporadically in the literature. The maxillary sinus is the most common site involved, while the inferior turbinate represents an extremely rare localization. We report a case of angiofibroma which arising from the

Neurilemmoma has been defined as a benign, encapsulated neoplasm that arises in the nerve fiber. It originates from the proliferation of Schwann cells in the perineurium causing displacement and compression of the adjacent nerve. This neoplasm is composed primarily of Schwann cells in a poorly collagenized stroma. It can occur in any age group. Neurilemmoma occurs all over the body including the head and neck region. In the head and neck region, 25%-40% of schwannoma cases have been reported. Occurrences of intraoral schwannomas are rare with reported prevalence being 1%. In the present articl

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a very infrequent, locally aggressive vascular neoplasm, characterized by fascicular spindle cell proliferation. It occurs almost exclusively in infants and adolescents, and is often associated with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. The tumor is predominantly located subcutaneously or in the deep soft tissue of the extremities and trunk, peritoneum, or retroperitoneum. However, this tumor can sometimes be located on the head and neck. We report a case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma of the maxillary sinus in a 4-month-old female infant presenting with cheek swe

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Endoscopic sinus surgery has enjoyed impressive success curing chronic disease in sinuses and has virtually replaced the Caldwell-Luc procedure for correction of problems with the maxillary sinus. Unfortunately, a significant number of patients have persistent maxillary symptoms after one or more endoscopic sinus operations. Existing reviews of this issue have identified only a few general causes for surgical failure.
METHODS: The records of 85 patients presenting to the author over a 5-year period with persistent maxillary sinus symptoms were reviewed.
RESULTS: In revi

We present an interesting but intriguing case of an indolent palatal swelling. The lesion was asymptomatic causing little discomfort to the patient and thus was an incidental clinical finding. Provisional diagnosis was a benign, minor salivary gland tumor. Clinical differential diagnoses included benign lymphoepithelial lesion or mucus extravasation phenomenon. Nevertheless, we also considered malignancies such as mucoepidermoid carcinoma, lymphoma, and neoplasm of the maxillary sinus. However, the histopathology revealed a rare clinicopathologic entity prompting immediate treatment of the les

A 30-year-old female patient with facial pain diagnosed as organizing hematoma of maxillary sinus by biopsy and imaging studies, and subsequently tumor was resected via an endoscope-assisted midfacial degloving approach. The tumor was histopathologically confirmed as organizing hematoma. In 3-week follow-up, asymptomatic emerging mass was observed at the same site, and needed a revision endoscopic resection. On pathologic examination, a low-grade angiosarcoma was identified, not organizing hematoma. After postoperative radiotherapy, she has been a status of no evidence of disease. This report

A centrally located maxillary myxoma with malignant histologic appearance and aggressive clinical course is reported in a 40-yr-old man. The gelatinous polypoid tumor mass was diagnosed as a myxoma in the first biopsy. The tumor recurred rapidly (within 3 wk) eroding the bony structures of the maxillary sinus and the hard palate and infiltrating the adjacent soft tissues. In repeated biopsy (as well as reassessment of the first biopsy) the tumor was found to be composed of plump stellate cells, some of which were pleomorphic with atypical and bizarre mitotic figures. The amorphic myxoid matrix

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a rare and locally benign neoplasm of high aggressive behavior found exclusively in the jaws. OM commonly occurs in the second and third decade, its quite rare to find in maxilla that to invading the maxillary sinus completely. The lesion often grows without symptoms and presents as a painless swelling. The radiographic features are variable, and the diagnosis is therefore not easy. This article presents a case of OM of maxilla in a 13-year-old boy, which was previously diagnosed as fibrosseous lesion with the help of CT.

Ameloblastic fibrosarcoma (AFS) or ameloblastic sarcoma is an extremely rare odontogenic neoplasm. The authors report AFS in the maxillary sinus of a 4-month-old boy. The tumor was composed of odontogenic epithelium, resembling that of ameloblastoma, and a mesenchymal part exhibiting features of fibrosarcoma. We also found some areas with deposition of dentinoid material closely adjacent to the ameloblastic epithelium. Although AFS has occurred in a wide age range, this is the first report of this tumor in infancy with long-term follow-up.

Haemangioma involving the paranasal air sinuses is rare. It presents with severe epistaxis or bleeding due to dental extraction and may mimic malignancy. A case of haemangioma of the maxilla is presented and the diagnostic and operative difficulties together with a review of literature are discussed. Bucy and Capp (1930) described primary haemangioma of bone with special reference to X-ray diagnosis. Wyke (1949) was of the opinion that haemangiomas accounted for only 10 per cent of primary benign neoplasms of skull bones. Batsakis (1979) commented that haemangioma of bone accounted for seven p

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) belongs to the group of plasma cell neoplasms, which include following entities: multiple myeloma (MM), lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma, solitary plasmacytoma of the bone (SBP) and EMP. Localization in the maxillary sinus with simultaneous involvement of the buccal cavity is rare. Misdiagnosis may lead to inappropriate or delayed management. X-ray, computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan provide useful information for diagnosis. Many CT and MRI features are not specific and i

Free myocutaneous latissimus dorsi transplants are exceptionally used in cervicofacial surgery. The authors have performed an anatomical study of 23 non-embalmed subjects, using injections of neoprene latex and barium sulfate into the axillary artery and dye injections. Dissections, arteriographs and corrosion show that the lower scapular pedicle is constant, with an average length of 9.5 cm and a caliber that is sufficient for vasuclar microsurgery. Eight patients with large T4 cervicocephalic neoplasms were operated, including two with tongue tumors, one with a tumor of the oropharynx, two o

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the latest treatment paradigms in sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC).
RECENT FINDINGS: The aggressive biology and associated advanced presentation of SNUC make successful treatment a challenge shared across medical specialties. Still, studies reporting outcomes in SNUC indicate that an aggressive treatment strategy consisting of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy offers the best chance of prolonged survival.
SUMMARY: Successful treatment of SNUC requires highly specialized care at tertiary cancer treatment facilities. A better understanding o

The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a benign epithelial odontogenic lesion that accounts for less than 1% of all odontogenic tumors. It is most frequently seen in the posterior areas of the mandible. Extension of this lesion to the maxillary sinus is extremely rare. In this paper, we report the fourth of such cases which has been reported, up to now. This tumor was encased between the right maxillary lateral and canine roots with extension to the maxillary sinus. Histologically, the tumor is composed of sheets of epithelial cells with eosinophilic or clear cytoplasm, intercellular b
