Developmental maxillofacial anomalies.

There is a wide variety of developmental maxillofacial anomalies secondary to defective transformation of the first pair of pharyngeal arches into adult structures. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are essential to precisely define aberrant maxillofacial anatomy and guide appropriate management. This review article provides an overview of maxillofacial embryogenesis, clinical symptoms, and characteristic imaging features of several anomalies, including choanal atresia, congenital nasal piriform aperture stenosis, dacryocystoceles, nasolacrimal duct stenosis, cleft lip and pal

BaS analysis: a new cephalometric study for craniofacial malformations.

OBJECT: Patients submitted to surgical advancement of the upper and middle facial third might have a relapse of the skeletal retraction after the removal of the distractor devices. Clinical signs related to this process are usually represented by exophthalmos, Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) or prognathism; however, the analytic definition of the relapse is very difficult , conventional cephalometric methods being influenced by the spatial movement of "N" (nasion) or "Or" (orbital) points. The authors present a new cephalometric technique that could be used as a more objective mean of

[Syndromes 22. Rieger's syndrome].

Rieger syndrome is a rare autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by defects of the anterior chamber of the eye, failure of the periumbilical skin to involute, and developmental malformations of the dentition. Recognition of the dental anomalies may result in the early diagnosis of this syndrome and prevent progressive visual loss.

[Diagnosis of dento-skeletal deformities].

The diagnosis of dento-skeletal deformities is discussed. The suggestion has been made to use a simple classification, which leaves room for a descriptive diagnosis. The descriptive diagnosis should include aspects related to the maxillofacial skeleton, the soft tissues and the dentoalveolar part. A soft tissue analysis will help to assess the main deformity which is often a combination of factors, frequently located in both jaws. A recommendation is made to include a physical therapist, speech therapist and psychologist in the team.

Detection of facial landmarks by a convolutional neural network in patients with oral and maxillofacial disease.

Facial nerve dysfunction is common in patients with Bell's palsy, trauma, tumour, or iatrogenic injuries. Imaging assessment is the most convenient method for patients and their treating physician. With developments in artificial intelligence (AI), manual work will be replaced. In this study, a database of facial images of patients with oral and maxillofacial diseases was set up to develop a facial nerve functional assessment system based on AI. This database was then used to evaluate the accuracy of a state-of-the-art algorithm for facial landmark detection named 'HRNet'. Utilizing this datab

Identification of an association between Robinow syndrome and moyamoya.

INTRODUCTION: Our group, along with others, has previously reported associations between moyamoya syndrome and a number of genetic disorders, including Down syndrome, Seckel dwarfism, sickle cell disease, and neurofibromatosis type I. Here we present the first reported case of a patient with the concomitant diagnosis of moyamoya and Robinow syndrome - a rare genetic disorder characterized by fetal-like faces, mesomelic shortening of the forearms, and developmental delay. The clinical, radiographic, and surgical findings are described, as well as the importance of this association. METHODS: Ca

[Orthognathic and orthodontic consequences of mouth breathing].

There is a large controversy about the causal relations between dento-facial deformities and mouth-breathing habits. Some postural and morphological changes during long-term adaptation to oral respiration are evoked: opening of the bite with a lowered postural position of the mandible, reduction of upper arch width, downward and backward rotation of the mandible, increased lower facial height and changes in the inclination of the lower and upper incisors. It seems that the altered postural position of the tongue and of the mandible, needed for oral ventilation, could, by soft-tissue stretching

Maxillofacial morphological factors related to acceleration of maxillary growth attributed to facial mask treatment: a structural superimposition study.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical textbooks mention that the contact between the pterygoid process and the palatine's pyramidal process is not a "suture" but "conjugation.".The aim was to evaluate the maxillofacial morphological factor responding most to the orthopedic force of facial mask treatment, using the structural superimposition analysis. METHODS: Thirty-one girls with Angle Class III malocclusion treated using a facial mask (FM group) and 11 girls with pseudo-Class III malocclusion (pseudo-III group) were examined. Lateral cephalograms at pre- and posttreatment were analyzed to evaluate maxillo

Heminasal agenesis: a reconstructive challenge.

Heminasal agenesis is a rare congenital malformation often associated with deformities of the eyes and lacrimal system, midface, and proboscis lateralis. Reconstruction is especially challenging because of missing lining, cartilage, and skin. We present a case of heminasal agenesis in a 5-year-old girl with concomitant hypertelorism, coloboma of the eyelids, and maxillary hypoplasia. The patient underwent facial bipartition for hypertelorism correction and cantilever bone graft. A forehead flap was designed using an anaplastic model from the patient's twin sister. Cartilage harvested from the

Neural crest stem cell population in craniomaxillofacial development and tissue repair.

Neural crest cells, delaminating from the neural tube during migration, undergo an epithelial-mesenchymal transition and differentiate into several cell types strongly reinforcing the mesoderm of the craniofacial body area - giving rise to bone, cartilage and other tissues and cells of this human body area. Recent studies on craniomaxillofacial neural crest-derived cells have provided evidence for the tremendous plasticity of these cells. Actually, neural crest cells can respond and adapt to the environment in which they migrate and the cranial mesoderm plays an important role toward patternin

Facial anomalies in patients with cytochrome-c-oxidase (COX) deficiency: a dysneurulation.

The authors report 3 cases of cytochrome-c-oxidase deficiency (2 cases of Kearns-Sayre syndrome and 1 case of chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia) with Central Nervous System alterations and facial anomalies. The facial anomalies are high forehead, wide nasal bridge, upturned nose, long and flat philtrum (alterations depending on frontal-nasal-premaxillary structures which derive from prosencephalic neural crests), hypoplastic maxilla and mandible, ophthalmoplegia (alterations of maxilla and III-VI cranial nerve nuclei, which derive on the mesencefalic neural crests), low set ears, sh

A longitudinal evaluation of craniofacial growth in a patient with Kabuki make-up syndrome: a case report.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the craniofacial growth of a patient diagnosed with Kabuki make-up syndrome (KMS). Craniofacial growth was assessed by analysing lateral cephalometric radiographs with an interval of 12-15 months. They were taken from 6 years 9 months to 14 years 2 months. Angular and linear measurement analyses of the craniofacial complex showed a hypoplastic maxilla and a constricted maxillary basal arch width. The mandibular size was relatively large and had started to increase from 13 years 4 months. This resulted in a prognathic face caused by forward grow

Categorization of craniofacial deformities based on our experience with surgical manipulation.

A wide variety of deformities are seen by the craniofacial team. To facilitate the coding and retrieval of data collected, a system has been devised in which an attempt is made to transfer different clinical problems into units which can be processed more efficiently and encoded more exactly. The different surgical manipulations used form the basis of this system. Careful forethought and understanding are prerequisite for the utilization of this system by the craniofacial team.
