The sites of growth and remodeling, and the associated changes in cortical bone structure, have been studied in the chimpanzee mandible and compared with those previously reported in the human and macaque mandibles. The location of the principal sites of growth, and the distribution of the areas of deposition and resorption in the ramus, were found to be similar in all three species. In the chimpanzee, unlike Man, the bone being deposited at the condyle, posterior border of the ramus and coronoid process was plexiform in nature, indicating very rapid growth. The pattern of remodeling in the ma

BACKGROUND/AIM: The standardization of the maxillofacial examination using a validated checklist is highly important. A checklist can also be a valuable tool for epidemiological studies, as it provides all clinical information related to maxillofacial trauma. The aim of this study was to propose a new checklist for the initial evaluation of maxillofacial trauma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The development and validation of the new checklist were performed in four consecutive phases: (a) determination of items and development of the checklist; (b) analysis by experts; (c) pre-test; and (d) pilot stu

The Silverman's syndrome or "child abuse syndrome" consist in several symptomes whose about 50% are maxillo-facial ones. These which are must often unknown at the initial stage, are responsible for an after effect syndrome, involving very significant nasal, oral, labial and buccal lesions. The anomalies of facial growth are the results of chronic lesions of cartilagenous septum and of nose bone area. A better understanding of this syndrome should held to diagnose it as quickly as possible. Indeed children are endangered by a lack of protective measures.

Maxillofacial hard tissues have several differences compared to bones of other localizations of the human body. These could be due to the different embryological development of the jaw bones compared to the extracranial skeleton. In particular, the immigration of neuroectodermally differentiated cells of the cranial neural crest (CNC) plays an important role. These cells differ from the mesenchymal structures of the extracranial skeleton. In the ontogenesis of the jaw bones, the development via the intermediate stage of the pharyngeal arches is another special developmental feature. The aim of

The maxillofacial region develops during 3 to 8 weeks in an embryo. The process involves neural crest cell migration and proliferation as well as facial protrusion jointing and fusion. The maxillofacial region is one of the predilection sites of congenital malformations. We treated a 5-year-old Chinese boy with abnormal development of the left maxillofacial region. We describe in detail the patient's characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment processes and try to explain the possible causes of the disease.

BACKGROUND: Although maxillofacial injuries in the elderly population frequently result from falls and motor vehicle crashes, the association between osteoporosis and fractures of the maxillofacial region remains poorly defined.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between osteoporosis and maxillofacial trauma in the elderly. DESIGN, SETTING, AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A retrospective review of 59 patients 60 years or older treated for maxillofacial fractures at a trauma center between 1989 and 2000 was performed. The severity of osteoporosis was graded by evaluating the radiographic appea

OBJECTIVES: Fetal environmental conditions are crucial for life-long health. Direct measurements of developmental conditions are limited in humans; thus, several biomarkers of those conditions have been proposed: that is, finger ridge-counts, level of facial fluctuating asymmetry (FA), and digit ratio (2D:4D). Since all of these biomarkers share a similar gestational time of formation, we hypothesize that their values are significantly correlated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected at the Mogielica Human Ecology Study Site in southern Poland among 234 women. Finger ridge-counts, level

The oral and maxillofacial organs play vital roles in chewing, maintaining facial beauty, and speaking. Almost all physiological processes display circadian rhythms that are driven by the circadian clock, allowing organisms to adapt to the changing environment. In recent years, increasing evidence has shown that the circadian clock system participates in oral and maxillofacial physiological and pathological processes, such as jaw and tooth development, salivary gland function, craniofacial malformations, oral carcinoma and other diseases. However, the roles of the circadian clock in oral scien

Sixty-eight long-term survivors of childhood cancer were evaluated for dental and maxillofacial abnormalities. Forty-five patients had received maxillofacial radiation for lymphoma, leukemia, rhabdomyosarcoma, and miscellaneous tumors. Forty-three of the 45 patients and the remaining 23 who had not received maxillofacial radiation also received chemotherapy. Dental and maxillofacial abnormalities were detected in 37 of the 45 (82%) radiated patients. Dental abnormalities comprised foreshortening and blunting of roots, incomplete calcification, premature closure of apices, delayed or arrested t

The "gummy smile" is a complex developmental issue that requires a three-dimensional approach to diagnosis and treatment. This article explores the multifaceted nature of the gummy smile, tracing its origins to early childhood growth patterns and breathing dysfunctions. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the interplay between skeletal development, soft tissue function, and breathing modalities in the formation of craniofacial structures. The article discusses how early mouth breathing and tongue dysfunction can lead to maladaptive skeletal growth, resulting in vertical maxillary exc

BACKGROUND: The number of surgical procedures to repair a cleft palate may play a role in the outcome for maxillofacial growth and speech. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the relationship between the number of surgical procedures performed to repair the cleft palate and maxillofacial growth, speech and fistula formation in non-syndromic patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An electronic search was performed in PubMed/old MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Scopus and CINAHL databases for publications between 1960 and December 2015. Publi

Minimizing mid-facial growth impairment is one of the treatment goals in cleft lip and palate surgery. As growth of the maxilla extends into young adulthood, long-term evaluation is essential to make a comprehensive assessment of a treatment protocol. There are numerous treatment approaches for cleft lip/palate surgery, and most have the characteristic distinction between either an early or a late cleft palate closure. PRISMA guidelines were applied to explore the quality of the current literature and to identify treatment factors influencing long-term cephalometric outcomes. The literature se

The roentgenological methods of research take the lead in the diacrisis of dentofacial anomalies, they are of the utmost importance as for the identification of the jaws' growth character, so too for the generation of the treatment planning and of the expected response to the treatment. The type of the jaw growth is identified by the means of a basal angle on the teleroentgenography (TRG). The objective of the research was to develop a rapid test method of identification of the type of growth by means of a basal angle on the orthopantomogram (OPTG). The comparison of <B and of <G was conducted

Since the beginning of our specialty, our understanding of the link between function and facial growth and development has progressively improved. Today, we know that children with sleep-related breathing problems will often develop distinctive facial characteristics. In adults, sleep apnea can result in serious morbidity and mortality. Orthodontists can ask sleep-related questions in the health history to help identify sleep breathing disorders. Treating these patients presents unique opportunities for orthodontists to collaborate with other medical specialties to improve a patient's health a

Edentulism is usually associated with the aging patient. However, total or partial tooth loss also affects young individuals, mainly as a result of trauma, decay, anodontia, or congenital and acquired jaw defects involving the alveolar processes. For elderly patients, the use of oral implants has become an accepted treatment modality for edentulism, and most of today's knowledge regarding implants is based on such practice. There has been hesitation to perform implant therapy for growing children; hence, few children to date have been provided with implant-supported construction. Consequently,

The zebrafish has emerged as an important model for vertebrate development as it relates to human health and disease. Work in this system has provided significant insights into the variety of genetic signals that direct the cellular activities and tissue interactions necessary for proper assembly of the pharyngeal skeleton. Unfortunately our understanding of craniofacial development beyond embryonic stages is far less complete. Stated another way, we know a great deal about the early patterning of the skull, but we know comparatively little about how mature craniofacial shape is determined and

After the craniofacial structures have completed embryologic development, movement of facial muscles begins. Paraxial mesoderm of the first (mastication) and second pharyngeal (facial expression) arches gives rise to the muscles of the craniofacial area. Muscles derived from the third and fourth pharyngeal arches are involved in swallowing and vocalization. For the human newborn face to have a normal morphologic appearance, contractions of these muscles must occur to stimulate forward growth of bone, cartilage growth, and facial muscle bulk. Facial muscles begin to contract between 6 and 8 wee
