Maxillofacial fractures and craniocerebral injuries - stress propagation from face to neurocranium in a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Severe facial trauma is often associated with intracerebral injuries. So it seemed to be of interest to study stress propagation from face to neurocranium after a fistlike impact on the facial skull in a finite element analysis. METHODS: A finite element model of the human skull without mandible consisting of nearly 740,000 tetrahedrons was built. Fistlike impacts on the infraorbital rim, the nasoorbitoethmoid region, and the supraorbital arch were simulated and stress propagations were depicted in a time-dependent display. RESULTS: Finite element simulation revealed von Mises st

Maxillofacial Fractures Associated With Laryngeal Injury: A Craniofacial Surgeon Should be Alert.

OBJECTIVE: Maxillofacial fractures with concomitant laryngeal injuries put both the quality and maintenance of life in jeopardy. Because of its low incidence, it is often overlooked in the clinical setting. The purpose of this study is to review the incidence, clinical presentations, managements, and outcomes of these patients. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of medical records from 2008 to 2015 was conducted at a single institute. A case series (n = 12, which contributed 22.2% of laryngeal injuries in our institute) of these patients was presented, and propensity score matching was applied

Camel bite injury to the maxillofacial region: unusual cause and uncommon location.

Animal bite injuries are prevalent worldwide, but the causative animal and the spectrum of injuries are dependent on the kind of animals cohabitating with the human population. Camel bites as a cause are relatively rare. Camels are particularly aggressive, especially during the mating season, when conflicts between the males occasionally lead to dangerous fights resulting in the death of one or both of the combatants. We present a case of camel bite injury to the maxillofacial region inducing an uncommon fracture and the management of both soft and hard tissue injuries, especially addressing t

This investigation evaluated patient demographics, diagnostic methods, and effective therapeutic modalities associated with blunt carotid injury (BCI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of patient records with an ICD-9-CM diagnosis of carotid injury conducted at MetroHealth Medical Center during the 24-month period between August 1993 and July 1995. Carotid injuries attributable to penetrating trauma were excluded. Age, gender, cause of injury, Gla

The Multifaceted Burden of Dog Bite Injuries: A Retrospective Study From an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Unit.

BACKGROUND: Dog bite injuries (DBIs) are a common cause of facial trauma injuries requiring oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) input. They can present a dual burden of physical trauma and long-term psychological morbidity, yet these effects remain underrecognized and under-supported. PURPOSE: This study aims to quantify the OMS workload associated with DBI's and identify the physical and psychological outcomes experienced by victims of these injuries. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: Retrospective case series of dog-related injuries presenting to the OMS department from January 2020 to Febru

Characteristic of Maxillofacial Injuries Resulting from Interpersonal Violence Between 2021 and 2025: Retrospective Study from Poznan, Poland.

Background: Interpersonal violence is one of the most common causes of maxillofacial injuries. These injuries can range from minor soft-tissue injuries to serious, life-threatening conditions. This is particularly important when injuries occur in an exposed and vulnerable area of the body, such as the facial area. This study aimed to analyse the types of maxillofacial injuries, assess a profile of a typical victim of violence and determine the circumstances of the injury. Methods: A retrospective review was performed on the clinical data of patients managed for maxillofacial trauma resulting f

Management of maxillofacial injuries in humans due to animal bites and mauling: A report of three cases.

Animal attacks and bite injuries are common occurrences as the natural habitat of animals is diminishing due to human encroachment. Individuals injured in animal attacks present with different types of injuries. Urgent and effective management of these injuries would have a significant effect on the final outcome. Rabies is a fatal disease in humans, and, till date, only those that received vaccination before the onset of illness survived this disease. The goal of the case reports presented in the article was to document the injuries suffered in animal bite injuries and add to the literature o

Association Between Helmet Use and the Frequency of Maxillofacial Injuries After Bicycle- or Scooter-Related Accidents in Children.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, more than 15,000 children visit the emergency department (ED) after bicycle or scooter accidents annually, frequently presenting with maxillofacial injuries. Despite evidence that helmet use reduces injuries in the general population, research focusing on maxillofacial injuries in children is still limited. PURPOSE: The study purpose was to estimate and compare the frequencies of bicycle- or scooter-related maxillofacial injuries between helmeted and unhelmeted pediatric riders. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: This single-center retrospective cohort study was c

Prevalence of dental, oral, and maxillofacial traumatic injuries among domestic violence victims: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Domestic violence (DV) encompasses a series of abusive behaviors, perpetrated in a family environment, against individuals of all ages and genders. Injuries to the head, neck, and face are frequent findings among victims of abuse, negatively impacting their quality of life. Although oral and maxillofacial injuries (OMFI) and traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are commonly diagnosed among DV victims, their prevalence is still unknown. This systematic review was aimed to assess the prevalence of OMFI and TDI among victims of DV. METHODS: The protocol of the review was registered i

The complex dynamics of maxillofacial trauma in blast and fragmentation injuries: Current understanding and gaps in scientific evidence.

Recent epidemiological data demonstrate a significant rise in blast-induced maxillofacial trauma incidences in both military and civilian settings. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze maxillofacial trauma caused by heavy weaponry, examining blast dynamics, ballistic forces, and fragmentation effects. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, SciSpace, and Google Scholar, incorporating studies on blast injuries, ballistic trauma, and war-related maxillofacial damage. Keywords included "maxillofacial injuries", "blast injuries", "ballistic trauma", "high-energy trauma
