RATIONALE: Pseudo-pseudo Meigs syndrome (PPMS), characterized by pleural effusion, ascites, and elevated cancer antigen-125 (CA-125) levels, is a rare complication of autoimmune diseases, particularly of systemic lupus erythematosus-systemic sclerosis (SLE-SSc) overlap syndrome.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 39-year-old female presented with progressive symptoms, including finger swelling (since 13 years), skin hardening (since 10 years), bilateral second toe ulceration (since 3 months), and abdominal distention (since 1 month). During treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), she developed

The triad of ascites, pleural effusion, and elevated cancer antigen-125 (CA-125) levels in the absence of ovarian malignancy in systemic lupus erythematosus patients is specifically named pseudo-pseudo Meigs' syndrome (PPMS) or Tjalma syndrome. In this case we reported a 33 years female patient with pleural effusion lasting for 3 years and new onset progressive massive ascites and increased level of CA-125. After she was evaluated for an underlying benign and malign ovarian tumor or any other malignancies, serologic tests were requested with respect to progressive renal dysfunction, proteinuri

Malignant solitary fibrous tumors in the retroperitoneum are rare, and their treatment strategies have not yet been established. A 61-year-old woman with dyspnea underwent laparotomy under a presumptive diagnosis of Meigs' syndrome. She underwent both adnexectomy and retroperitoneal tumor excision. The histologic diagnosis was of a fibrothecoma of both ovaries and a retroperitoneal solitary fibrous tumor that was considered malignant based on its mitotic activity. Local recurrence was observed 9 months postoperatively; re-excision was performed, and radiation therapy was administered. Four mon

A patient with recurrent pleural effusions posed a diagnostic challenge. The pleural aspirate CA-125 assay was markedly elevated which indicated a primary ovarian pathologic process. However, in this case a rare fallopian tube adenocarcinoma was the underlying problem. Meigs' syndrome can resemble a metastatic pelvic carcinoma in its presentation, but the prognosis is much more favourable when the syndrome is associated with a benign ovarian tumour.

Meigs syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the triad of benign ovarian tumors, ascites, and pleural effusion. However, concurrent presentation with both pleural and pericardial effusions is exceedingly rare. This paper presents a unique case of Meigs syndrome in a 75-year-old African American female patient with a history of anemia who was admitted for a left femur fracture secondary to a fall. In addition to her orthopedic injury, the patient exhibited intermittent abdominal fullness and discomfort, prompting a thorough diagnostic evaluation. Physical examination was unremarkable, a

BACKGROUND: The eponym "Meige syndrome" and the term "cranio-cervical dystonia" have been used inter-changeably in the literature and recently the validity of this eponym has been debated.
OBJECTIVES: To study the uniqueness of the term "Meige syndrome", from a large cohort of patients with cranio-cervical dystonia.
METHODS: We describe the 15years follow-up of a large cohort of 50 patients with Meige syndrome, seen in a neurology movement disorder clinic and in a multidisciplinary neuro-ear-nose-throat (ENT) clinic. Following the original description of Henry Meige (1866-1940), we have incl

BACKGROUND: Meige syndrome (MS) is a rare adult-onset cranial dystonia associated with complex neuropathological mechanisms. Recent studies have shown that abnormal coagulation plays a vital role in the pathological and physiological mechanisms of neurological disease and injury. However, the association between coagulation markers and MS remains unclear.
METHODS: Data of 493 patients with MS and 684 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from the Department of Clinical Laboratory of the Third People's Hospital of Henan Province. Differences in coagulation markers were compared between differe

Meige syndrome is a segmental form of dystonia. It is a disabling disease, especially when refractory to treatment with botulinum toxin. A well-established therapeutic option is deep brain stimulation (DBS), and the target in bilateral globus pallidus internus (GPi DBS) demonstrated satisfactory short- and long-term efficacy. However, some patients present minor or suboptimal responses after GPi DBS, and in those cases, rescue DBS may be appropriate. The present case illustrates a good outcome after subthalamic nucleus (STN) and not after GPi DBS (considering that both were well positioned and

CONTEXT: Despite being the most common cause of cranial dystonia, Meige's syndrome remains a rare clinical entity. Characterized by blepharospasm and orofacial dystonia, patients suffering from Meige's syndrome benefit from the injection of botulinum toxin (BTX).
AIMS: As the majority of the studies tend to discuss Meige's syndrome with blepharospasm patients, there is a paucity of case-based studies dealing exclusively with this syndrome. Hence, we intended to characterize and define the evolution of this syndrome and objectively determine the response of the patients suffering from this ent

INTRODUCTION: Meige syndrome (MS) is part of the group of segmental cranial dystonias, which affect more than two cranial muscle groups. Specifically, blepharospasm is associated with another cranial dystonia (oromandibular, cervical or laryngeal). The aim of this paper was to report our experience in patients with spasmodic dysphonia (SD) associated with primary MS.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study involving 8 patients between May 2010 and June 2015. Variables recorded were: age, sex, associated dystonia, electromyographic pattern in laryngeal muscles and treatment given. Outcomes

Meige's syndrome is a rare neurological syndrome characterized by oromandibular dystonia and blepharospasm. Its pathophysiology is not clearly determined. A 35-year-old female presented to psychiatric department with blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia with clinical provisional diagnosis of psychiatric disorder (Conversion Disorder). After thorough physical examination including detailed neurological exam and psychiatric evaluation no formal medical or psychiatric diagnosis could be made. The other differential diagnoses of extra pyramidal symptom, tardive dyskinesia, conversion disorder,

A pilot case-control study was conducted to identify possible risk factors for Meige's syndrome. Patients with Meige's syndrome and age- and sex-matched controls suffering from other neurological diseases were recruited from the Movement Disorders Clinic and Neurology Outpatient Department of the All India Insititute of Medical Sciences. All participants were interviewed and information regarding psychiatric and medical illnesses, use of medications, exposure to fumes, dust and pets, characteristics such as marital status, socio-economic status, alcohol, tea/coffee use, tobacco use, betel nut

A 52-year-old schizophrenic patient acutely showed blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia following neuroleptic-induced akathisia. She had suffered from schizophrenia and been treated with neuroleptics for 15 years and had manifested tardive dyskinesia 5 years ago. Following a change in her neuroleptic medication, severe akathisia developed. Two days after the appearance of akathisia, blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia appeared. After the disappearance of akathisia, the disorder continued. The frequency of blepharospasm ranged from 30 to 40 (times/min). The oral administration of trihe

To clarify the factors determining the amelioration of Meige's syndrome, changes of involuntary movements (IVMs) and functional disability, we examined 60 patients with Meige's syndrome during 5 years after the onset. On average, they showed gradual worsening of IVMs for approximately 2.1 years, then the IVMs ameliorated slowly. In many patients, blepharospasm appeared as the first symptom. Subsequent IVMs were seen in vicinity of the muscles of orbicularis oculi. Phasic involuntary contractions changed to tonic ones in some patients. Asynchrony of the IVMs in various facial or neck muscles ma

Three cases of Meige syndrome with severe bilateral facial spasm were reported. All patients suffered from abnormal facial movement characterized by blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia, and had atrophic changes of bilateral basal ganglia which were recognized by brain CT scan. Bilateral facial nerve block at the foramen stylomastoideum was applied to those three patients. Excellent results were obtained by this block technique in all the patients. The technique is not so sophisticated and is recommended for the treatment of the patient with Meige's syndrome.

A double-blind crossover study of sodium valproate and placebo was conducted in five patients with Meige syndrome. CSF neurotransmitter studies were performed at the end of each treatment period. GABA levels were not influenced by the administration of sodium valproate. An increase in HVA levels was observed in every patient, which may reflect an increase in central dopaminergic activity. This finding may explain the trend towards clinical deterioration which was observed during treatment with sodium valproate. Sodium valproate appears to be ineffective in Meige syndrome.
