Relationship between episodic memory and volume of the brain regions of two functional cortical memory systems in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Two functional networks are proposed as neuronal support for the complex processes of memory: the anterior temporal and the medial posterior systems. We examined the atrophy of hippocampus (HC) and of those areas constituting the two functional memory systems in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with low disability. METHODS: Episodic memory (EM) was assessed in 88 relapsing MS patients and in 40 healthy controls using Wechsler Memory Scale III (Spanish adaptation). FreeSurfer software was used to calculate normalized volume of total cortex, grey matter, white matter, subc

Cognitive reappraisal influences the organization of emotional episodes in memory.

Changes in our environment help to segment continuous experience into distinct memories. For example, switching locations can cue this segmentation process and enhance long-term memory. Experiencing a wave of negative emotion can also separate memories of adjacent events, but it remains unclear whether this effect is similarly adaptive. Here, we tested whether downregulating emotional responses alters the impact of negative emotion on memory organization and whether emotion-driven segmentation is related to mental health. Participants viewed sequences of neutral objects interspersed with a sin

Temporal Context Reinstatement Drives Episodic-Like Order Memory in Long-Context Language Models.

Human episodic memory supports the retrieval of experiences that unfold over extended timescales, yet the computational mechanisms underlying this ability remain debated due to the limited mechanistic accessibility in long-term memory experiments in humans. Long-context LLMs may offer promising ways to reveal plausible computational mechanisms that drive this type of retrieval. Here, we investigate whether and how LLMs capture the core behavioral signatures of episodic memory via a temporal order memory task. Using a new dataset of human behavior based on memory of a full-length novel, we show

Understanding episodic memory dynamics: Retrieval and updating mechanisms revealed by fMRI and tDCS.

This study investigates brain mechanisms in memory preservation and alteration using a three-phase design: memory encoding (Day 1), interference under fMRI (Day 2), and testing (Day 3). Thirty-one participants completed the core experiment, supplemented by a tDCS study (n = 118) targeting the visual cortex. Original memories were more susceptible to incorrect updating during old-background/new-object interference compared to relearning and no-retrieval conditions. Interference trials elicited heightened activation in the Inferior Parietal Lobe (IPL), Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC), and

Aging and episodic memory specificity: Evidence challenging a domain-general pattern separation decline.

Aging is associated with a decline in episodic memory specificity. This phenomenon has been observed across various memory tasks, such as the Mnemonic Similarity Task (MST), where older adults show a heightened tendency to falsely recognize perceptually similar items. While many studies suggest this impairment reflects a generalized reduction in pattern separation, others indicate that older adults may exhibit preserved discrimination abilities for semantic representations. Furthermore, pattern separation accounts also posit that a bias toward pattern completion, a process whereby partial cues

Does Freediving Lead to Hippocampal Adaptability to Hypoxia and Maintenance of Episodic Memory?

BACKGROUND: Accidental hypoxia has detrimental effects on the brain, particularly on the hippocampal subfields (HS), which are highly sensitive to oxygen deprivation and play a crucial role in episodic memory. This raises the question: could freediving training induce anatomical changes in the HS and lead to significant memory deficits? This study aimed to investigate the impact of a season of freediving training on HS anatomy and episodic memory performance, as freedivers represent a unique natural model for studying the effects of repeated voluntary hypoxic exposure on brain function in heal

The left prefrontal cortex determines relevance at encoding and governs episodic memory formation.

The role hemispheric lateralization in the prefrontal cortex plays for episodic memory formation in general, and for emotionally valenced information in particular, is debated. In a randomized, double-blind, and sham-controlled design, healthy young participants (n = 254) performed 2 runs of encoding to categorize the perceptual, semantic, or emotionally valenced (positive or negative) features of words followed by a free recall and a recognition task. To resolve competing hypotheses about the contribution of each hemisphere, we modulated left or right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) ac

Promising neurostimulation routes for targeting the hippocampus to improve episodic memory: A review.

This review aims to highlight modern neurostimulation approaches that are effectively activating the hippocampus and enhancing episodic memory performance. The hippocampus is a brain region known to play an essential role in episodic memory processes. However, as it is nestled deep within the brain, it has been a challenging target for traditional neurostimulation approaches, with studies reporting inconsistent memory effects. Recent studies suggest more than half of the electrical current from non-invasive transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) methods may be attenuated by the human scalp,

Temporal pole volume is associated with episodic autobiographical memory in healthy older adults.

Recollection of personal past events differs across the lifespan. Older individuals recall fewer episodic details and convey more semantic information than young. Here we examine how gray matter volumes in temporal lobe regions integral to episodic and semantic memory (hippocampus and temporal poles, respectively) are related to age differences in autobiographical recollection. Gray matter volumes were obtained in healthy young (n = 158) and old (n = 105) adults. The temporal pole was demarcated and hippocampus segmented into anterior and posterior regions to test for volume differences betwee

Neural correlates of episodic memory in adults with Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Adults with Down syndrome are at an ultra-high risk of developing early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Episodic memory deficits are one of the earliest signs of the disease, but their association with regional brain atrophy in the population with Down syndrome has not been explored. We aimed to investigate the neuroanatomical correlates of episodic memory in adults with Down syndrome and symptomatic Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: Single-center, cross-sectional study. A total of 139 adults with Down syndrome (85 asymptomatic and 54 with symptomatic Alzheimer's disease) were included in

What déjà vu and the "dreamy state" tell us about episodic memory networks.

Illusions of inappropriate familiarity with the current experience or hallucinatory recall of memories are reported in temporal lobe seizures. Pathophysiological hypotheses have been proposed, involving temporal limbic regions (Hughlings-Jackson), temporal neocortex ("interpretive cortex", Penfield), or both (Bancaud). Recent data acquired from presurgical investigations using intracerebral electrode recordings, demonstrate a critical role for the sub- and para-hippocampal cortices. From this, a novel hypothesis of cortico-limbic networks emerged: déjà-vu results from an abnormal synchronizati

Episodic and prospective memory difficulties in 13-year-old children born very preterm.

OBJECTIVES: Children born very preterm (VP) are susceptible to a range of cognitive impairments, yet the effects of VP birth on long-term, episodic, and prospective memory remains unclear. This study examined episodic and prospective memory functioning in children born VP compared with their term-born counterparts at 13 years. METHOD: VP (n = 81: born <30 weeks' gestation) and term (n = 26) groups were aged between 12 and 14 years. Children completed: (i) standardized verbal and visuospatial episodic memory tests; and (ii) an experimental time- and event-based prospective memory test that inc

Emotional modulation of episodic memory in children and adolescents with Williams-Beuren syndrome.

Children and adolescents with Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) have been described as having specific memory abilities and emotional reactivity. Although it is well established in the literature that emotion can enhance memory, no such studies have been undertaken in individuals with WBS. In three experiments, the present study tested whether the negative or positive emotional valence of stimuli can influence verbal, visual and visuo-spatial memory by specifically evaluating two memory components: item and associative memory. Sixteen 8- to 18-year-old individuals with WBS performed the first two

Social Relationships in Early Life and Episodic Memory in Mid- and Late Life.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the longitudinal relationships between retrospective reports of early-life social relationships (i.e., having good friends, parent-child relationship quality, and childhood neighborhood social cohesion) and episodic memory in China. METHODS: We analyzed 2 waves of data (2011 and 2015) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The analytical sample included 9,285 respondents aged 45 and older at baseline. A lagged dependent variable approach was used to estimate the associations between measures of early-life social relationships and episodic memo

Prestimulus Activity in the Cingulo-Opercular Network Predicts Memory for Naturalistic Episodic Experience.

Human memory is strongly influenced by brain states occurring before an event, yet we know little about the underlying mechanisms. We found that activity in the cingulo-opercular network (including bilateral anterior insula [aI] and anterior prefrontal cortex [aPFC]) seconds before an event begins can predict whether this event will subsequently be remembered. We then tested how activity in the cingulo-opercular network shapes memory performance. Our findings indicate that prestimulus cingulo-opercular activity affects memory performance by opposingly modulating subsequent activity in two sets

Remote spatial and autobiographical memory in cases of episodic amnesia and topographical disorientation.

A number of theories have postulated that there is a strong relationship between episodic memory and spatial processes mediated by the hippocampus. Evidence for episodic amnesia following damage to the medial temporal lobes is extensive, but less is known about the types of spatial memory affected by damage to these regions. In this study, we compared episodic memory with detailed scene memory, landmark recognition and schematic (map-based) spatial memory in a group of individuals with amnesia related to damage to the medial temporal lobes (MTL) including the hippocampus. We compared their per

The spatiotemporal organization of episodic memory and its disruption in a neurodevelopmental disorder.

Recent theories of episodic memory (EM) posit that the hippocampus provides a spatiotemporal framework necessary for representing events. If such theories hold true, then does the development of EM in children depend on the ability to first bind spatial and temporal information? And does this ability rely, at least in part, on normal hippocampal function? We investigated the development of EM in children 2-8 years of age (Study 1) and its impairment in Williams Syndrome, a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by visuospatial deficits and irregular hippocampal function, (Study 2) b

Common Recruitment of Angular Gyrus in Episodic Autobiographical Memory and Bodily Self-Consciousness.

Parietal cortex and adjacent parts of the temporal cortex have recently been associated with bodily self-consciousness (BSC). Similarly, growing evidence suggests that the lateral parietal cortex is crucial for the subjective aspects of episodic autobiographical memory (EAM), which is based on the conscious experience of reliving past events. However, the neuroanatomical relationship between both fundamental aspects remains currently unexplored. Moreover, despite the wealth of neuroimaging data on EAM, only few neuroimaging studies have examined BSC and even fewer examined those aspects of BSC

Better imagined: Neural correlates of the episodic simulation boost to prospective memory performance.

Episodic simulation is an adaptive process that can support goal-directed activity and planning success. We investigated the neural architecture associated with the episodic simulation improvement to the likelihood of carrying out future actions by isolating the brain regions associated with this facilitation in a prospective memory paradigm. Participants performed a lexical decision task by making word/non-word judgments, with rarely occurring prospective memory target words requiring a pre-specified manual response. Prior to scanning, participants were given exposure to two lists of prospect
