Representing objects and features in long-term memory: A case for direct feature-feature binding.

Objects are typically remembered with their accompanying features, suggesting that objects and features are bound together in memory. Yet, there is an ongoing debate about the configuration of such bindings, particularly whether multiple features of an object are directly linked or are only indirectly linked via the object. Here, we tested the binding configuration of object-feature representations in long-term memory in three experiments, bridging research from the domains of object and source memory. In two experiments, participants were presented with object icons with a specific color and

The role of 5-HT7R in the memory impairment of mice induced by long-term isoflurane anesthesia.

General anesthesia is widely utilized in the clinic for surgical and diagnostic procedures. However, growing evidence suggests that anesthetic exposure may affect cognitive function negatively. Unfortunately, little is known about the underlying mechanisms and efficient prevention and therapeutic strategies for the anesthesia-induced cognitive dysfunction. 5-HT7R, a serotonin receptor family member, is functionally associated with learning and memory. It has recently become a potential therapeutic target in various neurological diseases as its ligands have a wide range of neuropharmacological

Model-driven neuromodulation of the right posterior region promotes encoding of long-term memories.

BACKGROUND: Long-term recognition memory depends both on initial encoding and on subsequent recognition processes. OBJECTIVE: In this study we aimed at improving long-term memory by modulating posterior parietal brain activity during the encoding process. If this area is causally involved in memory encoding, its facilitation should lead to behavioral improvement. Based on the dual-process memory framework, we also expected that the neuromodulation would dissociate subsequent familiarity-based and recollection-based recognition. METHODS: We investigated the role of the posterior parietal brai

Long-term effects of prenatal drug exposure on the neural correlates of memory at encoding and retrieval.

The objective of the current study was to examine what stage of memory (encoding or retrieval) may be compromised in adolescents with a history of prenatal drug exposure (PDE) and how the effects of PDE on memory ability are substantiated at the neural level. To achieve this goal, we examined memory performance and associated brain activations in adolescents with and without a history of PDE via event-related fMRI during encoding and retrieval. Consistent with previous studies, we found that PDE subjects remembered fewer items than community comparison subjects. However, there were no differen

Role of protein synthesis and DNA methylation in the consolidation and maintenance of long-term memory in Aplysia.

Previously, we reported that long-term memory (LTM) in Aplysia can be reinstated by truncated (partial) training following its disruption by reconsolidation blockade and inhibition of PKM (Chen et al., 2014). Here, we report that LTM can be induced by partial training after disruption of original consolidation by protein synthesis inhibition (PSI) begun shortly after training. But when PSI occurs during training, partial training cannot subsequently establish LTM. Furthermore, we find that inhibition of DNA methyltransferase (DNMT), whether during training or shortly afterwards, blocks consoli

Effect of Alcohol and Tobacco Smoke on Long-Term Memory and Cell Proliferation in the Hippocampus of Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol is frequently used in combination with tobacco and few studies explore interactions between these two drugs of abuse. Here, we evaluated the effect of chronic alcohol administration and concomitant exposure to tobacco smoke on long-term memory and on cell proliferation in the hippocampus of rats. METHODS: Forty male Wistar rats were assigned to four groups and treated with alcohol (2g/kg by gavage) and/or exposed to tobacco smoke (from six cigarettes, by inhalation) twice a day (at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM) for 30 days. Long-term memory was evaluated in the inhibitory avoidan

Vagal tone as a biomarker of long-term memory for a stressful social event at 4 months.

This study investigates infants' memory for social stress after a 15-day retention interval using behavior and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). Experimental group infants were exposed to face-to-face still-face paradigm (FFSF) two times; the first time at 4 months and after a 2-week interval. Control group infants were exposed to FFSF only once at 4 months plus 2 weeks. Infants were categorized as suppressors or non-suppressors based on the direction of RSA change at first FFSF exposure. No behavioral differences were found among groups and exposure conditions. In the experimental group sup

Interactions of working and long-term memory: Evidence from Brown-Peterson and proactive interference effects.

How do working memory (WM) and episodic long-term memory (eLTM) interact to support immediate memory performance? Their contributions are often intertwined, reflecting a functional overlap that challenges clear-cut distinctions between the two systems. The present study investigates this interaction by assessing the combined effects of two diagnostic manipulations-proactive interference (PI) and secondary task effects (via Brown-Peterson-style filled retention intervals)-on binding tasks across varying set sizes. In Experiment 1, participants encoded word-object pairs and completed a four-alte

Prediction of CO2 concentration in mushroom greenhouse via optimized long and short term memory algorithm.

To increase the accuracy as well as effectiveness of predicting the level of CO2 in mushroom cultivating greenhouses, two optimized prediction models of long and short term memory neural networks (VMD-SSA-LSTM and VMD-DBO-LSTM) are proposed. To start with, time series data on greenhouse CO2 concentrations were decomposed to get intrinsic mode function (IMF) at various time scales. The sparrow search algorithm (SSA) or dung beetle optimization Algorithm (DBO) is then used to optimize the amount of hidden layer neurons, discover the best learning rate, find the optimal iteration times, and impro

Traffic-related air pollution backcasting using convolutional neural network and long short-term memory approach.

Air pollution backcasting, especially nitrogen dioxide (NO2), is crucial in epidemiological studies, thus enabling the reconstruction of historical exposure levels for assessing long-term health effects. Changes in NO2 concentrations in urban areas are typically influenced by vehicle composition, technology, and traffic volumes. However, the observed NO2 levels at a monitoring site also reflect contributions from other sources, such as industrial and regional backgrounds. This study proposes a model that captures the spatial variability of NO2 concentrations, incorporating temporal trends thro

Slight and hidden hearing loss differentially affect short- and long-term memory in young rats.

Mild forms of hearing loss (HL) have been linked to cognitive impairments in children, yet the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this connection remain unclear. Existing research using animal models mostly focuses on more severe levels of HL or investigates only limited aspects of cognition. To gain a broader understanding of how slight/hidden HL affects cognitive behaviors, we induced HL in 4-week-old Wistar rats through noise exposure. Auditory brainstem response measurements confirmed slight and hidden HL, but this auditory impairment did not alter the density of inner hair cells or the

Time series forecasting of weight for diuretic dose adjustment using bidirectional long short-term memory.

Loop diuretics are prevailing drugs to manage fluid overload in heart failure. However, adjusting to loop diuretic doses is strenuous due to the lack of a diuretic guideline. Accordingly, we developed a novel clinician decision support system for adjusting loop diuretics dosage with a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm using time-series EMRs. Weight measurements were used as the target to estimate fluid loss during diuretic therapy. We designed the TSFD-LSTM, a bi-directional LSTM model with an attention mechanism, to forecast weight change 48 h after heart failure patients were injected

The DDHD2-STXBP1 interaction mediates long-term memory via generation of saturated free fatty acids.

The phospholipid and free fatty acid (FFA) composition of neuronal membranes plays a crucial role in learning and memory, but the mechanisms through which neuronal activity affects the brain's lipid landscape remain largely unexplored. The levels of saturated FFAs, particularly of myristic acid (C14:0), strongly increase during neuronal stimulation and memory acquisition, suggesting the involvement of phospholipase A1 (PLA1) activity in synaptic plasticity. Here, we show that genetic ablation of the PLA1 isoform DDHD2 in mice dramatically reduces saturated FFA responses to memory acquisition a

Non-Contact Heartbeat Detection Based on Ballistocardiogram Using UNet and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory.

Benefiting from non-invasive sensing tech- nologies, heartbeat detection from ballistocardiogram (BCG) signals is of great significance for home-care applications, such as risk prediction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and sleep staging, etc. In this paper, we propose an effective deep learning model for automatic heartbeat detection from BCG signals based on UNet and bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM). The developed deep learning model provides an effective solution to the existing challenges in BCG-aided heartbeat detection, especially for BCG in low signal-to-noise ratio, in wh

Immediate and delayed decrease of long term potentiation and memory deficits after neonatal intermittent hypoxia.

Apnea of prematurity is a common clinical condition that occurs in premature infants and results in intermittent hypoxia (IH) to brain and other organs. While short episodes of apnea are considered of no clinical significance, prolonged apnea with bradycardia and large oxygen desaturation is associated with adverse neurological and cognitive outcome. The mechanisms of cognitive deficits in IH are poorly understood. We hypothesized that brief but multiple episodes of severe oxygen desaturation accompanied by bradycardia may affect early and late synaptic plasticity and produce long-term cogniti

Adult hippocampal MeCP2 preserves the genomic responsiveness to learning required for long-term memory formation.

MeCP2 is required both during postnatal neurodevelopment and throughout the adult life for brain function. Although it is well accepted that MeCP2 in the maturing nervous system is critical for establishing normal development, the functions of MeCP2 during adulthood are poorly understood. Particularly, the requirement of hippocampal MeCP2 for cognitive abilities in the adult is not studied. To characterize the role of MeCP2 in adult neuronal function and cognition, we used a temporal and region-specific disruption of MeCP2 expression in the hippocampus of adult male mice. We found that MeCP2 i

ADRA2B deletion variant influences time-dependent effects of pre-learning stress on long-term memory.

Extensive work over the past few decades has shown that certain genetic variations interact with life events to confer increased susceptibility for the development of psychological disorders. The deletion variant of the ADRA2B gene, which has been associated with enhanced emotional memory and heightened amygdala responses to emotional stimuli, might confer increased susceptibility for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or related phenotypes by increasing the likelihood of traumatic memory formation. Thus, we examined whether this genetic variant would predict stress effec

Acute pentobarbital treatment impairs spatial learning and memory and hippocampal long-term potentiation in rats.

Reports of the effects of pentobarbital on learning and memory are contradictory. Some studies have not shown any interference with learning and memory, whereas others have shown that pentobarbital impairs memory and that these impairments can last for long periods. However, it is unclear whether acute local microinjections of pentobarbital affect learning and memory, and if so, the potential mechanisms are also unclear. Here, we reported that the intra-hippocampal infusion of pentobarbital (8.0mM, 1μl per side) significantly impaired hippocampus-dependent spatial learning and memory retrieval
