Short-term memory performances during sustained wakefulness in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.

Both working and immediate memories were assessed every 4h by specific short-term memory tasks over sustained wakefulness in 12 patients with obstructive sleep apnea and hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and 10 healthy controls. Results indicated that OSAHS patients exhibited lower working memory performances than controls on both backward digit span and complex Sternberg tasks. Speed and accuracy on Sternberg tasks were affected by memory load in both groups. However, immediate memory was not impaired in OSAHS patients. Diurnal and nocturnal SaO(2) were correlated with speed and accuracy high-speed m

An attempt to improve auditory short-term memory in Down's syndrome individuals through reducing distractions.

Down's syndrome (DS) individuals, relative to nonretarded individuals, have greater difficulty remembering brief sequences of verbal information presented auditorily. Previous research suggests at least two possible attentional explanations of their difficulty: They are especially susceptible to both auditory distraction and off-task glancing during laboratory tasks. DS, non-DS mentally retarded and nonretarded persons listened to, looked at, and attempted to remember sequences of digits. Although the three groups did not differ in their recall of visually-presented stimuli, DS subjects showed

Classification of distinct lung diseases using novel enhanced long short-term memory based optimization methodology.

Lung disease classification using chest X-ray (CXR) images has become essential for early diagnosis and improved clinical decision-making. However, challenges such as low image quality, feature similarity among diseases, and classification instability reduce diagnostic reliability. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel ELSTM-AZOA framework for multiclass lung disease classification using the NIH CXR dataset. Initially, the collected CXR images are preprocessed using the balance contrast enhancement technique to improve image quality. U-Net +  + is then employed for accurate lung

Enhancing heart disease classification based on greylag goose optimization algorithm and long short-term memory.

Heart disease is a category of various conditions that affect the heart, which includes multiple diseases that influence its structure and operation. Such conditions may consist of coronary artery disease, which is characterized by the narrowing or clotting of the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle, with the resulting threat of heart attacks. Heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), heart valve problems, congenital heart defects present at birth, and heart muscle disorders (cardiomyopathies) are other types of heart disease. The objective of this work is to introduce the Greylag Goose

Erlotinib regulates short-term memory, tau/Aβ pathology, and astrogliosis in mouse models of AD.

INTRODUCTION: Erlotinib is an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor that is approved by the FDA to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Several membrane receptors, including EGFR, interact with amyloid β (Aβ), raising the possibility that erlotinib could have therapeutic effects on Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the effects of erlotinib on Aβ/tau-related pathology and cognitive function in mouse models of AD and its mechanisms of action have not been examined in detail. METHODS: To investigate the effects of erlotinib on cognitive function and AD pathology, 3 to 6-month-o

Doppler Radar Sensor-Based Fall Detection Using a Convolutional Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Model.

Falls among the elderly are a common and serious health risk that can lead to physical injuries and other complications. To promptly detect and respond to fall events, radar-based fall detection systems have gained widespread attention. In this paper, a deep learning model is proposed based on the frequency spectrum of radar signals, called the convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory (CB-LSTM) model. The introduction of the CB-LSTM model enables the fall detection system to capture both temporal sequential and spatial features simultaneously, thereby enhancing the accuracy and relia

Can speech perception deficits cause phonological impairments? Evidence from short-term memory for ambiguous speech.

Poor performance on phonological tasks is characteristic of neurodevelopmental language disorders (dyslexia and/or developmental language disorder). Perceptual deficit accounts attribute phonological dysfunction to lower-level deficits in speech-sound processing. However, a causal pathway from speech perception to phonological performance has not been established. We assessed this relationship in typical adults by experimentally disrupting speech-sound discrimination in a phonological short-term memory (pSTM) task. We used an automated audio-morphing method (Rogers & Davis, 2017) to create amb

Anti-Cholestatic Therapy with Obeticholic Acid Improves Short-Term Memory in Bile Duct-Ligated Mice.

Patients with cholestatic liver disease, including those with primary biliary cholangitis, can experience symptoms of impaired cognition or brain fog. This phenomenon remains unexplained and is currently untreatable. Bile duct ligation (BDL) is an established rodent model of cholestasis. In addition to liver changes, BDL animals develop cognitive symptoms early in the disease process (before development of cirrhosis and/or liver failure). The cellular mechanisms underpinning these cognitive symptoms are poorly understood. Herein, the study explored the neurocognitive symptom manifestations, an

Eye-tracking indices of impaired encoding of visual short-term memory in familial Alzheimer's disease.

The basis of visual short-term memory (VSTM) impairments in preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains unclear. Research suggests that eye movements may serve as indirect surrogates to investigate VSTM. Yet, investigations in preclinical populations are lacking. Fifty-two individuals from a familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) cohort (9 symptomatic carriers, 17 presymptomatic carriers and 26 controls) completed the "Object-localisation" VSTM task while an eye-tracker recorded eye movements during the stimulus presentation. VSTM function and oculomotor performance were compared between groups a

Towards Attention-Based Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory for Travel Time Prediction of Bus Journeys.

Travel time prediction is critical for advanced traveler information systems (ATISs), which provides valuable information for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the urban transportation systems. However, in the area of bus trips, existing studies have focused on directly using the structured data to predict travel time for a single bus trip. For state-of-the-art public transportation information systems, a bus journey generally has multiple bus trips. Additionally, due to the lack of study on data fusion, it is even inadequate for the development of underlying intelligent transporta

Elevated peripheral kynurenine/tryptophan ratio predicts poor short-term auditory memory in panic disorder patients.

Abnormalities in the kynurenine pathway (KP) have been implicated in the cognitive deficits of psychiatry disorders, possibly through cytokines that increase the activity of indoleamine-2,3 dioxygenase (IDO), a key enzyme for tryptophan-to-kynurenine conversion. Some studies on panic disorder (PD) have detected elevated cytokines in blood. We aimed to determine the extent to which elevated peripheral cytokine levels and kynurenine/tryptophan (kyn/tryp) ratio (1) are biological markers for PD patients and (2) are related to cognition in PD. Seventy-eight PD patients and matched healthy controls

Hippocampal Protein Kinase C Signaling Mediates the Short-Term Memory Impairment Induced by Delta9-Tetrahydrocannabinol.

Cannabis affects cognitive performance through the activation of the endocannabinoid system, and the molecular mechanisms involved in this process are poorly understood. Using the novel object-recognition memory test in mice, we found that the main psychoactive component of cannabis, delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), alters short-term object-recognition memory specifically involving protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent signaling. Indeed, the systemic or intra-hippocampal pre-treatment with the PKC inhibitors prevented the short-term, but not the long-term, memory impairment induced by THC. In con

Blast induces oxidative stress, inflammation, neuronal loss and subsequent short-term memory impairment in rats.

Molecular and cellular mechanisms of brain injury after exposure to blast overpressure (BOP) are not clearly known. The present study hypothesizes that pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory pathways in the brain may be responsible for neuronal loss and behavioral deficits following BOP exposure. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized and exposed to calibrated BOP of 129.23±3.01kPa while controls received only anesthesia. In situ dihydroethidium fluorescence staining revealed that BOP significantly increased the production of reactive oxygen species in the brain. In addition, real-time reverse

Verbal short-term memory and cerebellum: evidence from a patient with congenital cerebellar vermis hypoplasia.

The impairment of phonological short-term memory has been reported in adults with cerebellar lesions. At the same time, a role of the cerebellum in speech production has been hypothesized. Cerebellar malformations have been related to developmental problems and language acquisition in children. We describe a 5-year-old male child with cerebellar vermis hypoplasia who presented a severe linguistic deficit. On language testing, verbal production was almost absent, while comprehension was partially spared. Digit span was markedly reduced. An extensive examination of phonological short-term memory

Distinct gamma-band components reflect the short-term memory maintenance of different sound lateralization angles.

Oscillatory activity in human electro- or magnetoencephalogram has been related to cortical stimulus representations and their modulation by cognitive processes. Whereas previous work has focused on gamma-band activity (GBA) during attention or maintenance of representations, there is little evidence for GBA reflecting individual stimulus representations. The present study aimed at identifying stimulus-specific GBA components during auditory spatial short-term memory. A total of 28 adults were assigned to 1 of 2 groups who were presented with only right- or left-lateralized sounds, respectivel

Short-term and long-term memory deficits in handedness learning in mice with absent corpus callosum and reduced hippocampal commissure.

The corpus callosum (CC) and hippocampal commissure (HC) are major interhemispheric connections whose role in brain function and behaviors is fascinating and contentious. Paw preference of laboratory mice is a genetically regulated, adaptive behavior, continuously shaped by training and learning. We studied variation with training in paw-preference in mice of the 9XCA/WahBid ('9XCA') recombinant inbred strain, selected for complete absence of the CC and severely reduced HC. We measured sequences of paw choices in 9XCA mice in two training sessions in unbiased test chambers, separated by one-we

No evidence for a protein-synthesis-dependent form of long-term fear memory: Translational inhibition and neural inactivation disrupt short- and long-term memory measures to the same degree.

Translational inhibition has been suggested to impair long-term memory (LTM) while leaving short-term memory (STM) unaffected. However, intracranial infusions of protein synthesis inhibitors such as anisomycin (ANI), cycloheximide, and emetine have been shown to profoundly suppress both spontaneous and evoked neural activity, likely due to impairments of mitochondrial function and cellular metabolic loss. Given this neural suppressive effect, we wanted to re-examine the influence of translational inhibition on acquiring and retaining novel information with a direct comparison to agents that si

Optimizing the Output of Long Short-Term Memory Cell for High-Frequency Forecasting in Financial Markets.

High-frequency trading (HFT) requires fast data processing without information lags for precise stock price forecasting. This high-paced stock price forecasting is usually based on vectors that need to be treated as sequential and time-independent signals due to the time irregularities that are inherent in HFT. A well-documented and tested method that considers these time irregularities is a type of recurrent neural network (NN), named long short-term memory (LSTM) NN. This type of NN is formed based on cells that perform sequential and stale calculations via gates and states without knowing w

Predicting individual water intake in beef cattle using longitudinal data and long short-term memory models.

Water intake (WI) remains an under-characterized yet essential trait in beef cattle systems, with implications for animal health, climate resilience, and resource efficiency. Existing predictive models, including those from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), rely on static equations derived from outdated data and lack resolution at the individual animal level. In this study, we developed and evaluated a long short-term memory (LSTM) model to predict daily WI using longitudinal data on animal characteristics, dry matter intake (DMI), and engineered environmen

Neural structures associated with auditory short-term memory and sentence repetition following chronic left hemisphere stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Prior evidence suggests auditory short-term memory (STM) and repetition share several processing elements. However, it remains elusive whether auditory STM capacity and repetition ability show overlapping neural correlates. We sought to identify the brain structures underpinning STM capacity and repetition outcomes in patients with chronic left hemisphere stroke and aphasia. METHODS: Fifty-four left hemisphere stroke patients with aphasia and 50 demographically matched healthy controls underwent digit span and language tasks. Structural and diffusion images were acquired in all
