Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Memory and Metamemory in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders.

Pathological doubt in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suggests core deficits in memory and metamemory, but the nature of these deficits and their response to treatment remain unclear. This study aimed to address this gap by investigating (a) whether memory and metamemory problems in OCD are due to retrieval or encoding processes, and (b) the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on these functions. Sixty OCD patients and 60 matched healthy controls completed 3 episodic memory tasks involving different stimuli, with assessments of judgment-of-learning and feeling-of-knowing. OCD pati

Exploring the molecular mechanisms of curcumin in modulating memory impairment in neurodegenerative disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Memory impairment is a critical challenge in neurodegenerative disorders, particularly in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and age-related cognitive decline. This research explores the molecular mechanisms by which curcumin, a polyphenolic compound derived from Curcuma longa, exerts neuroprotective effects that may ameliorate cognitive deficits associated with these conditions. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Evidence from both preclinical studies and emerging clinical trials indicates that curcumin enhances neuronal signaling and synaptic plasticity, primarily through the modu

Oxytocin and Fear Memory Extinction: Possible Implications for the Therapy of Fear Disorders?

Several psychiatric conditions such as phobias, generalized anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are characterized by pathological fear and anxiety. The main therapeutic approach used in the management of these disorders is exposure-based therapy, which is conceptually based upon fear extinction with the formation of a new safe memory association, allowing the reduction in behavioral conditioned fear responses. Nevertheless, this approach is only partially resolutive, since many patients have difficulty following the demanding and long process, and relapses are frequently observe

Neuroimaging Biomarkers of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy: Targets for the Academic Memory Disorders Clinic.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with exposure to repetitive head impacts, such as those from contact sports. The pathognomonic lesion for CTE is the perivascular accumulation of hyper-phosphorylated tau in neurons and other cell process at the depths of sulci. CTE cannot be diagnosed during life at this time, limiting research on risk factors, mechanisms, epidemiology, and treatment. There is an urgent need for in vivo biomarkers that can accurately detect CTE and differentiate it from other neurological disorders. Neuroimaging is an integral co

Patients with anxiety disorders rely on bilateral dlPFC activation during verbal working memory.

One of the hallmarks of anxiety disorders is impaired cognitive control, affecting working memory (WM). The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) is critical for WM; however, it is still unclear how dlPFC activity relates to WM impairments in patients. Forty-one healthy volunteers and 32 anxiety (general and/or social anxiety disorder) patients completed the Sternberg WM paradigm during safety and unpredictable shock threat. On each trial, a series of letters was presented, followed by brief retention and response intervals. On low- and high-load trials, subjects retained the series (five and

Protective and pathogenic roles of resident memory T cells in human skin disorders.

The human skin is populated by recirculating T cells and skin-sessile resident memory T cells (TRM). Skin TRM are constructed during immune responses against antigens that the host immune system encounters in the skin. TRM persist in the same sites for a long time and play important protective roles in skin immune responses in collaboration with other skin-composing cells such as dendritic cells and keratinocytes. These TRM with strong effector functions possibly also engender skin inflammatory disorders. Since human skin T cells, especially TRM, are phenotypically distinct from T cells in the

Looking beyond the hippocampus: old and new neurological targets for understanding memory disorders.

Although anterograde amnesia can occur after damage in various brain sites, hippocampal dysfunction is usually seen as the ultimate cause of the failure to learn new episodic information. This assumption is supported by anatomical evidence showing direct hippocampal connections with all other sites implicated in causing anterograde amnesia. Likewise, behavioural and clinical evidence would seem to strengthen the established notion of an episodic memory system emanating from the hippocampus. There is, however, growing evidence that key, interconnected sites may also regulate the hippocampus, re

Visual memory of meaningless shapes in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Visual memory is an important cognitive ability, which has been studied in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). In such studies meaningful shapes were used more frequently. Since meaningless shapes provide a better assessment of short term visual memory, in this study we used them to evaluate visual memory in children and adolescents with ASDs compared to the normal group. METHODS: Four visual memory tests of Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) including Paired Associates Learning (PAL), Pattern Recognition Memory (PRM), Spatial Recognition Me

Working memory and depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia and substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Substance abuse is highly prevalent in schizophrenia and it has been associated with negative consequences on the course of the pathology. Regarding cognition, the prevailing literature has produced mixed results. Some groups have reported greater cognitive impairments in dual diagnosis schizophrenia, while other groups have described the reverse. OBJECTIVE: The current cross-sectional study sought to investigate the potential differences in psychiatric symptoms and cognition between schizophrenia patients with and without substance use disorders. METHODS: Fifty-three schizophren

Frequency of early and late-onset dementias in a Japanese memory disorders clinic.

The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic profiles of patients with early (age<65 years) and late (age>or=65 years) onset of dementia in a memory disorders clinic in Japan. A total of 512 consecutive memory clinic patients were evaluated using clinical information and results of examinations. Diagnosis of dementia was made according to DSM-III-R, and that of subtypes according to standard diagnostic criteria. A total of 464 patients met the criteria for dementia. Amongst late-onset patients (n=430), Alzheimer's disease (AD) (48.1%) was the most frequent cause of dementia, followed by

Overlapping in memory profiles in Spanish children with autism spectrum disorders, developmental language disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Neurodevelopmental disorders do not have biological markers that allow for their identification. This means that in most cases, diagnosis is based on behavior. This approach implies that difficulties will exist in establishing the diagnostic boundaries of the different nosological entities, and it argues that neurodevelopmental disorders probably share neuropsychological deficits. Our main objective was to study whether neurodevelopmental disorders share a common endophenotype. We carried out a study of memory in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Developmental Language Disorders (

Microglial Innate Immune Memory: Implications and Research Advances in Central Nervous System Disorders.

The central nervous system (CNS), comprising the brain and spinal cord, represents the core regulatory hub of the body. Damage to the CNS often leads to irreversible structural and functional impairments of neural tissues, posing a major global public health challenge. Immune memory encompasses two states: immune training and immune tolerance, which are characterized by enhanced or attenuated immune responses, respectively, following initial exposure to external stimuli in immune cells such as monocytes and macrophages. Microglia, the resident immune cells of the CNS, can be rapidly activated

Correlations between Persistent Olfactory and Semantic Memory Disorders after SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Background: One of the main symptoms of COVID-19 is hyposmia or even anosmia. Olfactory identification is most often affected. In addition, some cognitive disorders tend to appear following the infection, particularly regarding executive functions, attention, and memory. Olfaction, and especially olfactory identification, is related to semantic memory which manages general knowledge about the world. The main objective of this study was to determine whether semantic memory is impaired in case of persistent post COVID-19 olfactory disorders. Methods: 84 patients (average age of 42.8 ± 13.6 years

[Neurodevelopmental disorders modify neurodegenerative diseases: a medical history to screen in memory clinic].

Neurodevelopmental disorders are frequent in the general population and are often lifelong conditions despite sometimes being masked by conscious or unconscious compensation and avoidance mechanisms. These conditions are often unknown or underestimated in adults, even when diagnosed in childhood. Neurodevelopmental disorders share similarities with and frequently interact in a complex way with neurodegenerative disorders. Considering these aspects during memory clinic assessments can provide a new perspective on lifelong neurocognitive trajectories. Assessing both neurodevelopmental and neurod

Investigating Principal Working Memory Features in Generalized, Panic, and Social Anxiety Spectrum Disorders.

Anxiety spectrum disorders are characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worrying about potential negative events in the short- and long-term future. Various reports linked anxiety spectrum disorders with working memory (WM) deficits despite conflicting results stemming from different study approaches. It remains unclear, however, how different anxiety spectrum disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder (PD), differ in WM function. In this study, we utilized verbal, numerical, and sequential evaluations of WM to cover most possib

Carbonic anhydrase modulation of emotional memory. Implications for the treatment of cognitive disorders.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1) are metalloenzymes which use CO2 as substrate, catalysing its interconversion to bicarbonate and a proton. In humans 15 CAs are expressed, 12 of which are catalytically active: the cytosolic CA I-III, VII, XIII, the membrane-bound CA IV, the mitochondrial CA VA and VB, the secreted CA VI, and the transmembrane CA IX, XII, XIV. Nine isoforms are present in the mammalian brain. Evidence supporting that CA inhibitors impair memory in humans has come from studies on topiramate and acetazolamide during acute high-altitude exposure. In contrast, administration o

Hippocampal subfield abnormalities and memory functioning in children with fetal alcohol Spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) affects early brain development and has been associated with hippocampal damage. Animal models of PAE have suggested that some subfields of the hippocampus may be more susceptible to damage than others. Recent advances in structural MRI processing now allow us to examine the morphology of hippocampal subfields in humans with PAE. METHOD: Structural MRI scans were collected from 40 children with PAE and 39 typically developing children (ages 8-16). The images were processed using the Human Connectome Project Minimal Preprocessing Pipeline (v4.0.1) an

Encoding Deficits Impede Word Learning and Memory in Adults With Developmental Language Disorders.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine whether the word-learning challenges associated with developmental language disorder (DLD) result from encoding or retention deficits. METHOD: In Study 1, 59 postsecondary students with DLD and 60 with normal development (ND) took the California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition, Adult Version (Delis, Kramer, Kaplan, & Ober, 2000). In Study 2, 23 postsecondary students with DLD and 24 with ND attempted to learn 9 novel words in each of 3 training conditions: uncued test, cued test, and no test (passive study). Sleep and Memory Disorders in a Patient Suffering from Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease.

Currently incurable, Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most commonly inherited neurological disorder, which affects a small percentage of the population. The most common cause of CMT is the duplication of a region on the short arm of chromosome 17, which includes the gene PMP22. We report a thirty-seven-year-old man with CMT disease having sleep, memory and attention disorders characterized by brief retrograde amnesia at early age. The patient has no genetic disease in the family, but was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, which emphasizes the sensory loss and prolonged infections. Diabe
