Linalool Ameliorates Memory Loss and Behavioral Impairment Induced by REM-Sleep Deprivation through the Serotonergic Pathway.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep has an essential role in the process of learning and memory in the hippocampus. It has been reported that linalool, a major component of Lavandula angustifolia, has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects, along with other effects. However, the effect of linalool on the cognitive impairment and behavioral alterations that are induced by REM-sleep deprivation has not yet been elucidated. Several studies have reported that REM-sleep deprivation-induced memory deficits provide a well-known model of behavioral alterations. In the present study, we

Experimental evolution of olfactory memory in Drosophila melanogaster.

In order to address the nature of genetic variation in learning performance, we investigated the response to classical olfactory conditioning in "high-learning" Drosophila melanogaster lines previously subject to selection for the ability to learn an association between the flavor of an oviposition medium and bitter taste. In a T-maze choice test, the seven high-learning lines were better at avoiding an odor previously associated with aversive mechanical shock than were five unselected "low-learning" lines originating from the same natural population. Thus, the evolved improvement in learning

Trajectories and timing of accelerated decline in specific memory domains preceding Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Memory impairment is a hallmark feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may emerge years before clinical diagnosis. However, the temporal sequence and acceleration patterns of decline across specific memory domains during the preclinical stage remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to characterize the longitudinal dynamics of four distinct memory processes in individuals progressing to clinical AD, and to identify the temporal sequence of continually accelerated decline. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from 382 participants in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimagin

Harmful Effects on the Hippocampal Morpho-Histology and on Learning and Memory in the Offspring of Rats with Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes.

Learning alterations in the child population may be linked to gestational diabetes as a causal factor, though this remains an open and highly controversial question. In that sense, it has been reported that maternal hyperglycemia generates a threatening condition that affects hippocampal development in offspring. The pyramidal cells of the CA3 subfield, a key structure in learning and memory processes, are particularly important in cognitive deficiencies. We evaluate the effect of the hyperglycemic intrauterine environment on hippocampal histomorphometry in offspring, correlating it with spati

Attention and executive control predict Alzheimer disease in late life: results from the Berlin Aging Study (BASE).

OBJECTIVE: Longitudinal studies of neuropsychological changes in the preclinical phase of Alzheimer disease (AD) have yielded mixed results. Although some studies report tests of episodic memory, others report tests of attention and executive functions as reliable predictors of subsequent AD. Following theoretical models of neuropsychological processes before AD onset, the authors examined the predictive value of attention and executive function in the preclinical phase of AD in old age. METHODS: Authors studied the cognitive performance of 187 initially normal participants of the Berlin Agin

Overcoming the costs of selective attention: Resolving rule-uncertainty supports acquisition of generalizable memory traces.

Research on category learning shows that people gradually allocate attention to deterministic features. Categorization models formalize this shift in attention as a process of "stretching" and "shrinking" dimensions of an internal representation, such that attended features bear a greater influence on choice than those ignored. Consistent with this view, gaze allocated to deterministic features increases alongside categorization accuracy. Going beyond the established relationship between gaze and performance, this work investigates whether gaze determines which features are encoded in the firs

Decreased Microglia in Pax2 Mutant Mice Leads to Impaired Learning and Memory.

Impaired learning and memory ability is one of the characteristics of a variety of neurological diseases, and its molecular mechanisms are complex and diverse and are regulated by a variety of factors. It is generally believed that synaptic plasticity plays an important role in the process of learning and memory. The protein encoded by the Pax2 gene is a transcription factor involved in neuron migration and cell fate determination during neural development. Mice knocked out of BDNF in the Pax2 lineage-derived interneuron precursor exhibited learning disabilities and severe cognitive impairment

Aminooxyacetic acid ameliorates alcohol-induced learning and memory deficits through BDNF-TrkB pathway and calcium homeostasis.

Chronic alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD) is mainly manifested as learning and memory impairment and cognitive decline in the long term. Ca2+ plays a key role in learning and memory impairment. The increase of intracellular Ca2+ concentration can directly cause mitochondrial dysfunction, destroy normal physiological signal transduction, and accelerate the process of learning and memory decline. Aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA), a selective inhibitor of Cystathionineβ-synthase (CBS), has a good effect on a variety of diseases, including improving stroke and reducing the incidence of convulsions. Learning, memory and blood-brain barrier pathology in Duchenne muscular dystrophy mice lacking Dp427, or Dp427 and Dp140.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a severe neuromuscular disorder that is caused by mutations in the DMD gene, resulting in a disruption of dystrophin production. Next to dystrophin expression in the muscle, different isoforms of the protein are also expressed in the brain and lack of these isoforms leads to cognitive and behavioral deficits in patients. It remains unclear how the loss of the shorter dystrophin isoform Dp140 affects these processes. Using a variety of behavioral tests, we found that mdx and mdx4cv mice (which lack Dp427 or Dp427 + Dp140, respectively) exhibit similar deficits in

Protective role of hemokinin-1 against age-dependent spatial memory and attention decline in mice.

Age-related cognitive decline is a major social and medical challenge, but its mechanisms remain poorly understood; prevention and therapy are unsatisfactory. The tachykinin hemokinin-1 (HK-1), encoded by the Tac4 gene, is expressed in brain regions involved in learning and memory and has been implicated in neuroimmune regulation, but its contribution to age-dependent cognitive impairment remains unclear. Here, we investigated whether endogenous HK-1 modulates cognitive performance during aging. Young (3-5 months), middle-aged (12-15 months), and old (18-20 months) male and female C57BL/6 J wi

ADRA2B deletion variant influences time-dependent effects of pre-learning stress on long-term memory.

Extensive work over the past few decades has shown that certain genetic variations interact with life events to confer increased susceptibility for the development of psychological disorders. The deletion variant of the ADRA2B gene, which has been associated with enhanced emotional memory and heightened amygdala responses to emotional stimuli, might confer increased susceptibility for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or related phenotypes by increasing the likelihood of traumatic memory formation. Thus, we examined whether this genetic variant would predict stress effec

Hippocampal lesions impair spatial memory performance, but not song--a developmental study of independent memory systems in the zebra finch.

Songbirds demonstrate song- and spatial-learning, forms of memory that appear distinct in formal characteristics and fitting the descriptions and criteria of procedural and episodic-like memory function, respectively. As in other vertebrates, the neural pathways underlying these forms of memory may also be dissociable, and include the corresponding song circuit and hippocampus (HP). Whether (or not) these two memory systems interact is unknown. Interestingly, the HP distinguishes itself as a site of immediate early gene expression in response to song and as a site of estrogen synthesis, a ster

Relationship between hippocampal subfields and Verbal and Visual memory function in Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy patients.

OBJECTIVE: High-resolution protocols used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) currently enable the detailed analysis of the hippocampus along with its subfield segmentation. The relationship between episodic memory and the hippocampus is well established, and there is growing evidence that some specific memory processing steps are associated with individual hippocampal segments, but there are inconsistencies in the literature. We focused our analysis on hippocampal subfield volumetry and neuropsychological visual and verbal memory tests in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) presenting

Altered performance of reelin-receptor ApoER2 deficient mice on spatial tasks using the Barnes maze.

The apolipoprotein E receptor 2 (ApoER2), expressed predominantly in forebrain regions including the hippocampus, is 1 of 2 receptors for the extracellular matrix protein reelin, which is critical for cortical development. Previous studies of ApoER2 mutant mice have indicated deficits in synaptic plasticity and learning. The current authors assessed learning and memory of ApoER2 knockout and wild-type mice on the Barnes circular maze. Mice were trained in this task for 22 days, followed by memory recall and reversal tests. ApoER2 knockout mice were initially slower to complete the task, but by

Intact sleep-dependent memory consolidation of auditory statistical learning among young adults with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder commonly linked to deficits in executive function. However, some theoretical frameworks propose that ADHD may also involve disruptions in cognitive mechanisms central to statistical learning, such as predictive processing and implicit learning. Moreover, abnormal sleep electroencephalography in ADHD raises the possibility of altered sleep-dependent memory consolidation of statistical learning. AIM: Here we examined how individuals with ADHD acquire and consolidate statistical regularities in auditory

Detecting accelerated long-term forgetting remotely in a community sample of people with epilepsy: Evidence from the Crimes and Four Doors tests.

People with epilepsy often report experiencing memory problems though these are not always detectable using standard neuropsychological measures. One form of difficulty that may be relatively prevalent in epilepsy is termed accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF), typically described as relatively greater loss of memory over days or weeks following initial encoding. The current study used remote assessment to examine memory and forgetting over one week in a broad community sample of people with epilepsy and healthy control participants, using two recently developed tests, one verbal (the Crimes
