CASE: We report a case of delayed presentation of popliteal artery laceration after arthroscopic meniscectomy. Three weeks after the procedure, the patient developed severe calf pain, swelling over the popliteal fossa, and foot drop, despite a normal initial postoperative period. Clinical examination and radiological investigations suggested a massive hematoma in the popliteal fossa. A decision was made to explore the popliteal artery and drain the hematoma after consultation with the vascular surgeon. A laceration was noted, and it was repaired.
CONCLUSION: Orthopaedic surgeons should mainta

UNLABELLED: Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) is one of the most common orthopaedic procedures. Understanding factors that predict better patient-reported outcomes is important for guiding patient and clinician decision-making. The purpose of this study was to evaluate predictors of pain and function after APM in a large, multisite, academic health system cohort.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 665 patients who were ≥40 years of age and who had APM without any concomitant ligament or cartilage-resurfacing procedures. There were 486 subjects (73%) who completed baseline and follow-up

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of concomitant meniscal surgery on the recovery of quadriceps activation and strength at a time when individuals return to sport following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
METHODS: Forty-six individuals that were cleared for participation following ACL reconstruction were invited to participate in this study. Participants were placed into groups according to surgical reports (ACL-only, n = 24; meniscal repair, n = 12; meniscectomy, n = 10). Quadriceps strength was quantified using isokinetic and isometric measures.

BACKGROUND: Surgery of meniscus tear results in limitation of function. The aim of study was functional assessment of knee 1 year after surgery with two techniques in cases of the medial meniscus tear followed by the same supervised rehabilitation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients with good KOSS scores constituted two equal groups after partial meniscectomy or meniscus suture. Measurements of knee extensors and flexors muscles peak torques were performed with angular velocities 60, 180, 240 and 300 s(-1) using Biodex IV system. One-leg-hop and one-leg-rising tests ascertained the

BACKGROUND: The treatment of meniscal tears in injured workers is associated with less favorable outcomes and higher utilization of clinical services. It was hypothesized that patients receiving Workers' Compensation who undergo arthroscopic meniscectomy can have excellent outcomes with physical therapy utilization below the national best-practices benchmarks.
METHODS: The records of 155 injured workers who had undergone 164 primary arthroscopic meniscectomies were reviewed at least one year following claim closure. The time to release to unrestricted full work duty and the number of postoper

We present the cases of 5 patients with a torn discoid lateral meniscus treated using partial central meniscectomy in conjunction with the suture repair of the tear. The patients were 4 boys and 1 girl with a mean age of 15.4 years (range, 11 to 17). Preoperatively, all patients complained of knee pain during daily or sports activities. At the final follow-up evaluation, more than 2 years later, 4 patients' conditions were graded as excellent and 1 patient's condition was graded as fair according to Ikeuchi's grading scale. The average Lysholm score improved from 83.4 points (range, 70-90) to

As a result of research supporting meniscus preservation, evidence shows that internationally, there has been a rise in rates of meniscus repair, especially in younger population, and a decline in rates of partial meniscectomy. The decline in partial meniscectomy has been rather rapid and has outpaced the rise in meniscal repair, likely due to increasing evidence against routine partial meniscectomy in degenerative tears with coexistent arthritis. However, despite the rise in meniscus repair, close to 95% of meniscus surgeries are still partial meniscectomies. The partial meniscectomy to menis

INTRODUCTION: Partial meniscectomy has been preferred in the treatment of discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) with tear, rather than total or subtotal meniscectomy, which could lead to late radiographic degenerative changes.
HYPOTHESIS: One or more risk factors contribute to radiographic progression of osteoarthritis after partial meniscectomy of DLM tear.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Inclusion criteria were consecutive patients who underwent arthroscopic surgeries for DLM tear from January 2005 to December 2010 by one surgeon. Exclusion criteria were preoperative osteoarthritis with KL grade 3 or more,

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have questioned the efficacy of meniscectomy in older patients with and without evidence of osteoarthritis; however, it continues to be frequently performed. There is limited information about age and other risk factors for adverse events and readmission after the procedure. This knowledge is vital to understand the true risk profile of this common surgery.
PURPOSE: To investigate if age and medical comorbidities were risk factors for postoperative adverse events and readmission after meniscectomy.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is often accompanied by injuries of the menisci. In order to restore knee stability, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is performed, with meniscus surgery when needed. The purpose of this study was to assess the medium-term outcome of ACLR in subjects with and without concomitant meniscus tear and partial meniscectomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We prospectively studied 73 patients after arthroscopically assisted bone-patellar tendon-bone ACLR. Subjects were divided into two subgroups: those who had only ACLR (group A, 54 subject

Discoid lateral meniscus of the knee causes a high morbidity in China. Since the traditional treatment to open the capsule and resect the meniscus often results in arthritis, it is now believed that a discoid lateral meniscus should be treated with arthroscopy to preserve part of the meniscus. The current study aimed to investigate the short-term clinical outcomes of arthroscopic meniscectomy for the treatment of discoid lateral meniscus tears. In the present study, we diagnosed and treated 42 patients (47 knees) with discoid lateral meniscus tears using arthroscopy between February, 2007 and

The clinical relevance of the anteromedial meniscofemoral ligament (AMMFL) in medial meniscus (MM) tears remains unclear. This study investigated whether arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) for MM tears with AMMFL is associated with joint degeneration. Among 2568 patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery in 2003 to 2017, 10 with AMMFL and ≥2 years of magnetic resonance imaging follow-up were selected for this retrospective comparative study. Five underwent APM for MM tears (excluding subtotal meniscectomy), while the other 5 did not. Procedures involving the lateral meniscus were exclude

OBJECTIVES: Preemptive analgesia is a technique in which analgesics are administered before a surgery to provide better postoperative pain relief with fewer side effects. In this study, we aimed to compare the preemptive efficacy of tramadol/acetaminophen fixed-dose combination, tramadol, and acetaminophen in patients undergoing ambulatory arthroscopic partial meniscectomy.
METHODS: We evaluated the patient records of 75 patients who underwent ambulatory arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. We divided the patients into three groups consisting of 20 patients each to equalize the groups. Group A

Ten years after a meniscectomy of discoid lateral meniscus, a 19-year-old man presented a loose body in his right knee with limited range of motion. At the time of meniscectomy, a stable osteochondritis dissecans in the lateral femoral condyle with a T2 high area in MRI was recognized; however, the lesion was left without surgical treatment. We performed fixation of a fragment and osteochondral grafting. Surgical treatment for stable juvenile osteochondritis dissecans still remains controversial; however, drilling will help to increase the healing potential and to prevent lesion progression, e
