CD40-CD40L expression during orthodontic tooth movement in rats.

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of the costimulatory molecules CD40 and CD40L in periodontal and bone cells in orthodontically treated and untreated teeth using immunohistochemistry. The upper first molars were moved mesially by a fixed appliance. In the experimental group, CD40+ cells were detected at both the tension and the resorption sides in fibroblast-, macrophage-, and dendritic-like cells. The staining was more pronounced on the resorption side. The strongest expression was observed on day 3, decreased on day 7, and reached a low level on day 10 after applicatio

Risk factors for apical root resorption of maxillary anterior teeth in adult orthodontic patients.

The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for apical root resorption in adult orthodontic patients. Standardized periapical radiographs of maxillary anterior teeth and cephalograms made before and after treatment and treatment charts of 343 adults, representing groups of consecutively treated patients from four orthodontic practices, were examined. Apical root resorption was calculated by subtracting posttreatment tooth length measurements from the corresponding pretreatment measurements. Root width was measured from the mesial to the distal outline of the roots 4 mm from the apex

The effect of high concentration of zoledronic acid on tooth induced movement and its repercussion on root, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone tissues in rats.

Zoledronic acid (ZA) is often prescribed for osteoporosis or resorptive metabolic bone disease. This study aims to evaluate the effect of ZA on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and root and bone resorption and its repercussion on root, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone tissues. The experimental group consisted of 72 Wistar rats divided in four subgroups: Naive, Saline and Zoledronic Acid groups at the concentration of 0.2 mg/kg [ZA (0.2)] or 1.0 mg/kg [ZA (1.0)]. The animals were subjected to i.v (dorsal penile vein) administrations of ZA or saline solution, on days 0, 7, 14 and 42. Under

Variability in human tooth cementum thickness reflecting functional processes.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the thickness of acellular extrinsic fibre cementum (AEFC) at four root positions of anterior and posterior teeth with special focus on functional aspects. Furthermore, the correlations between cementum thickness and chronological age and sex are investigated. BACKGROUND: While numerous studies confirm continuous cementum apposition with age, masticatory forces as well as physiological and orthodontically induced tooth movements also have the potential to affect tooth cementum thickness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Undecalcified teeth were embed

Evaluation of an intraoral maxillary molar distalization technique.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the pendulum appliance on distalization of maxillary molars and the reciprocal effects on the anchor premolars and maxillary incisors. Initial and follow-up cephalometric radiographs were obtained on 41 subjects (26 girls and 15 boys) who were treated with the pendulum appliance for bilateral distalization of the maxillary first molar teeth, for correction of the Class II molar relationship or for gaining space in the maxillary arch. Dental casts were available on 31 patients. Dental, skeletal, and soft tissue changes were determined. T

Biomechanical analysis of implant anchorage versus class II elastics in maxillary anterior retraction with clear aligners: a three-dimensional iterative finite element study.

BACKGROUND: Clear aligners are widely used for their esthetic advantages, yet anchorage control in extraction cases remains challenging, often leading to the "roller-coaster effect"-characterized by anterior tipping, extrusion, and posterior mesial drift. Evidence comparing anchorage strategies to mitigate this effect is limited. This study used iterative finite element analysis to evaluate two anchorage modalities during maxillary anterior retraction with clear aligners. METHODS: Three-dimensional models of maxillary teeth, periodontal ligaments, alveolar bone, and aligners were constructed

Ictal Bruxism - A Sign of Temporal Lobe Ictal Localization: A Case Series.

Ictal bruxism (IB) is a rare oro-alimentary automatism in focal seizures. We report a series of six patients with IB in drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) treated subsequently with temporal lobectomy. All patients had ictal teeth grinding with semiological features, suggestive of temporal lobe origin. Ictal electroencephalogram (EEG) onset showed artifacts corresponding to bruxism; one patient had a "checkerboard" pattern of EEG artifacts corresponding with lateral jaw movements. Five patients had a lesion in the mesial temporal lobe, while one patient had a neocortical temporal lobe

Later orthodontic appliance reactivation stimulates immediate appearance of osteoclasts and linear tooth movement.

BACKGROUND: Delays in the appearance of osteoclasts at compression sites occur after orthodontic appliance reactivation, when this is done during both the period of osteoclast recruitment and the peak expansion in the osteoclast population. This experiment examines osteoclasts and tooth movement in alveolar bone after appliance reactivation coinciding with alveolar bone formation and the time when reactivation osteoclasts first appear (ie, 10 days after initial appliance activation). METHODS: Bilateral orthodontic appliances were activated to mesially tip maxillary molars with 40 cN in 144 ra

Evaluation of the effect of local administration of PRP vs vitamin D3 on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement and the associated external apical root resorption.

BACKGROUND: Increased orthodontic treatment duration is associated with iatrogenic risks such as root resorption, white spot lesions etc. Recent research using pharmacological agents to accelerate tooth movement has mostly been conducted on animals and there is no reported research conducted on humans comparing the effects of Vitamin D3 and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in the same subjects using a split mouth technique. OBJECTIVES: To determine and compare effects of local injection of PRP and Vitamin D3 on the rate of tooth movement. Also, to assess association of external apical root resorpti

The extent of root resorption and tooth movement following the application of ascending and descending magnetic forces: a prospective split mouth, microcomputed-tomography study.

OBJECTIVE: Various factors have been examined in the literature in an attempt to reduce the incidence and severity of root resorption. The purpose of the present investigation is to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in relation to force level using gradually increasing (ascending) and decreasing (descending) orthodontic force generated by magnets on the severity of Orthodontically Induced Inflammatory Iatrogenic Root Resorption (OIIRR) and amount of tooth movement. METHODS: Twenty maxillary first premolars from 10 patients were subjected to ascending (25-225 g, magnets in a

Customized adjuncts with clear aligner therapy: "The Golden Circle Model" explained!

Clear aligners are the most debated infusion of technology into the orthodontic stratosphere and currently account for a sizable chunk of the orthodontic commercial market. Data indicate that a series of plastic aligners alone cannot resolve all the variants of malocclusion routinely treated by our specialty. Current literary consensus exists that the discrepancy between the predicted and actual clinical outcomes with clear aligner therapy (CAT) is around 50% or more, necessitating midcourse corrections, refinement, or additional aligners, or even a conversion to fixed appliances before the en

Prevalence of third molar impaction in orthodontic patients treated nonextraction and with extraction of 4 premolars.

The purposes of this study were to confirm that premolar extraction treatment is associated with mesial movement of the molars concomitant with an increase in the eruption space for the third molars and to test the hypothesis that such treatment reduces the frequency of third molar impaction. Lateral cephalograms, panoramic or periapical radiographs, and study models made before (T1) and after (T2) treatment and a minimum of 10 years postretention (T3) of 157 patients were selected from the postretention sample at the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Washington, Seattle. Aspartate aminotransferase activity in gingival crevicular fluid during orthodontic treatment. A controlled short-term longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: During orthodontic tooth movement, the early response of periodontal tissues to mechanical stress involves an acute inflammatory response, with a sequence characterized by periods of activation, resorption, reversal, and formation in both tension and compression sites. This study used a longitudinal design to examine aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in order to assess whether AST in GCF has potential as a possible diagnostic aid to monitor tooth movement and tissue response during orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Eighteen patients (mean a
