B-cell and T-cell lymphomas and other associated diseases induced by an infectious DNA viroid-like agent in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Five epidemics of diffuse, poorly differentiated lymphocytic, immunoblastic, and plasmacytoid lymphoma induced by an infectious, horizontally transmitting viroidlike agent have occurred in two hamster facilities. Incidence summaries and pathologic characteristics of the lymphomas induced in LSH and LVG hamsters are presented. An elevated leukocyte count with a marked increase in neutrophils and a significant decrease in small mononuclear lymphocytes was detected in 5-week-old but not in 10- or 25-week-old LVG hamsters born in the facility contaminated with the lymphoma-inducing agent. Three-we

Sectional Anatomy with Micro-Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Correlation of the Middle and Caudal Abdominal Regions in the Syrian Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

The abdomen is a key region in small animal veterinary practice, with the middle and caudal sections housing various organ systems that are susceptible to dysfunction, necessitating medical intervention or surgery. Sectional imaging techniques like CT and MRI are commonly used in small mammals, but no studies have focused on rodent abdomen. This study aimed to correlate micro-CT and MRI images of the middle and caudal abdominal regions with corresponding anatomical sections in Syrian hamsters (SHs), which are popular pets and experimental models. Ten healthy male SHs were used, and anatomical

Necator americanus: maintenance through one hundred generations in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). II. Morphological development of the adult and its comparison with humans.

Through 100 passages, the human hookworm Necator americanus was adapted to the golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, without either the requirement for exogenous steroids or other immunosuppressive agents, nor the requirement to infect hamsters as pups. Adult N. americanus recovered from infected hamsters were morphologically similar to those from infected humans in Sichuan Province, China, although they were smaller and the females produced fewer eggs. The natural history and kinetics of N. americanus infection was different in female and male hamsters. Female hamsters supported low intensity

Delayed type-hypersensitivity response of inbred strains of Syrian golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) to lethal or non-lethal lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infections.

In adult Syrian golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), intraperitoneal or footpad inoculation of the lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) strains, WE or Armstrong (ARM), caused systemic infection and induced serum LCMV-antibody. Hamster and virus strain-dependent lethal disease also occurred. With WE, MHA and PD4 inbred hamsters failed to eliminate infection and died of wasting disease. LSH and CB inbred hamsters resisted lethal WE-disease and cleared infection. LVG hamsters and inbred LHC hamsters were intermediate in WE-susceptibility; some died of wasting, while others survived with l

Development of real-time PCR assays for evaluation of immune response and parasite load in golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) infected by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected disease with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from small cutaneous nodules to severe mucosal tissue destruction. Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is the main species attributed to CL in the Americas. However, studies of experimental infection are limited in the murine model due to the self-resolutive pattern of the disease. Previously, our group demonstrated that the hamster model reproduces many of the clinical and histopathological features observed in humans. Herein, we standardized a RT-qPCR gene expression assay

Lack of a nitric-oxide response during the course of Leishmania infantum infection in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), with or without treatment with liposomal amphotericin B.

Liver and spleen volumes and serum concentrations of nitrate (the end-product of NO in vivo), albumin, gamma-globulin, protein, creatine and urea were measured during the course of progressive infections with Leishmania infantum MON-1 (MHOM/PR/93/CRE29) in 10 Syrian golden hamsters. Each hamster was infected by intraperitoneal injection with 4 x 10(7) promastigotes. Five of the infected animals were treated, with 6 mg liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB)/kg given by intracardiac injection, on day 107 post-infection (p.i.). Compared with those in the uninfected hamsters used as controls, the liver

Daily and photoperiodic 2-125I-melatonin binding changes in the pars tuberalis of the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus): effect of constant light exposure and pinealectomy.

Using quantitative autoradiography, 2-125I-melatonin binding was investigated throughout the light/dark cycle in the pars tuberalis (PT) of the pituitary of adult Syrian hamsters kept for 8 weeks either in long or short photoperiod (LP or SP, respectively). Melatonin receptor density in the PT displayed photoperiod dependent daily variations (maximal values in LP). Indeed, in LP, melatonin receptor density underwent strong daily variations with maximal values during the first half of the light period and minimal values at the end of the night. These variations depended on changes in the maxima

Comparative evaluation of lesion development, tissue damage, and cytokine expression in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) infected by inocula with different Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis concentrations.

The golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is a susceptible model to Leishmania (Viannia) spp.; however, available studies employ different infection protocols, which account for clinical and pathological presentation differences. Herein, L. (V.) braziliensis preparations were standardized to contain 10(4), 10(5), or 10(6) parasites to determine an optimal inoculum that ensured cutaneous lesions without causing a disseminated infection in hamsters. Lesion development was followed for 105 days by size measurements, and skin, draining lymph node, spleen, and sera were investigated to check parasi

Epidermotropic Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (mycosis fungoides) in Syrian Hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). A Report of Six Cases and the Demonstration of T-Cell Specificity.

Abstract- Epidermotropic cutaneous T-cell lymphoma was diagnosed in six Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) with a generalised dermatosis characterised by pruritus, alopecia and exfoliative erythroderma. Plaques and nodules were evident in one animal. Clinical and histopathological findings were suggestive of mycosis fungoides and electron microscopical investigations in one case were supportive. Immuno-histochemical stains for CD3 antigen were strongly positive in all cases. Résumé- Un lyphome T cutané a été diagnostiqué chez six hamsters de Sibérie (Mesocricetus auratus) avec une dermatos

Yellow fever virus isolated from a fatal post vaccination event: an experimental comparative study with the 17DD vaccine strain in the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

In order to investigate the pathogenicity of the virus strain GOI 4191 that was isolated from a fatal adverse event after yellow fever virus (YFV) vaccination, an experimental assay using hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) as animal model and YFV 17DD vaccine strain as virus reference was accomplished. The two virus strains were inoculated by intracerebral, intrahepatic and subcutaneous routes. The levels of viremia, antibody response, and aminotransferases were determined in sera; while virus, antigen and histopathological changes were determined in the viscera. No viremia was detected for eithe

Pharmacokinetics and amoebicidal activity of (+-)-(E)-3-(4- methylsulphinylstyryl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (BTI 2286E) and its sulphone metabolite (BTI 2571E) in the golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus.

BTI 2286E is a 1,2,4-oxadiazole with amoebicidal activity. Three groups of golden hamsters received single doses of BTI 2286E or its sulphone metabolite BTI 2571E as either BTI 2286E 60 mg/kg po or BTI 2571E 60 mg/kg po or BTI 2571E 60 mg/kg ip. Blood samples were collected up to 8 h post-dose and plasma concentrations of BTI 2286E and BTI 2571E were assayed by HPLC. BTI 2286E was rapidly absorbed, extensively metabolized during first pass and rapidly eliminated with a plasma elimination half-life of 1.32 h. Conversion to BTI 2571E was the major pathway of elimination. BTI 2571E had approximat

Mesocricetus auratus (Golden Syrian Hamster) Experimental Model of SARS-CoV-2 Infection Reveals That Lung Injury Is Associated with Phenotypic Differences Between SARS-CoV-2 Variants.

Despite the current level of public immunity to SARS-CoV-2, the early inflammatory events associated with respiratory distress in COVID-19 patients are not fully elucidated. Syrian golden hamsters, facultative hibernators, recapitulate the phenotype of SARS-CoV-2-induced severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced severe acute lung injury seen in patients. In this study, we describe the predominance of the innate immune response in hamsters inoculated with four different SARS-CoV-2 variants, underscoring phenotypic differences among them. Severe inflammatory lung injur

Comparison of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 DNA sequences from Necator americanus hookworms maintained for 100 generations in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) and hookworms from natural human infections.

The human hookworm Necator americanus was maintained through one hundred generations in the golden hamsters. The strain is now routinely maintained in laboratory hamsters through serial passage, and is the laboratory strain of choice for vaccine studies. Comparison of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (cox-1) sequences was shown previously to be useful for comparing the genetic structure of populations of N. americanus in China. Cytochrome oxidase 1 genes were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction, and the sequences compared to those of N. americanus recovered from infected humans fr

Effects of short-day photoperiods and of N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-5-methoxytryptamine, a putative melatonin antagonist, on melatonin synthesis in the Harderian gland of the Syrian hamster, Mesocricetus auratus.

The Harderian glands of Syrian hamsters contain melatonin and the enzymes N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) which synthesize melatonin from serotonin. Because the Harderian glands share this metabolic pathway with the pineal gland, we examined the effects of short-day photoperiods, which stimulate pineal-mediated gonadal regression, and N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-5-methoxytryptamine (ML-23), which has been described as a melatonin antagonist, on melatonin synthesis in the Harderian glands of the hamster. Harderian glands of male hamsters kept in short days had

Susceptibility and resistance of inbred strains of Syrian golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) to wasting disease caused by lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus: pathogenesis of lethal and non-lethal infections.

In different strains of inbred Syrian golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), the lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) strains WE and Armstrong (ARM) produced systemic infection with infective virus and viral antigens detected predominantly in reticuloendothelial organs. Host and virus strain-dependent fatal wasting disease also occurred. After infection with WE, all MHA and PD4 hamsters died of a progressive wasting disease and infectivity persisted in organs at relatively high titres. LSH and CB strain hamsters resisted lethal disease and totally eliminated infection. LVG and LHC strain

Antidepressants blunt the effects of inescapable stress on male mating behaviour and decrease corticotropin-releasing hormone mRNA expression in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus of the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

Stress decreases sexual activity. However, emerging research suggests that the psychological aspect of control prevents the detrimental effects of stress on male mating behaviour. The present study examined the effects of chronic escapable/inescapable stress on mating behaviour in the male Syrian hamster. Additionally, the ability of the antidepressant clomipramine to prevent the adverse effects of stress on mating behaviour was explored. In this paradigm, two groups received the same electric footshock stress, but differed in the psychological aspect of control. Cohorts were divided into two

Comparative studies on the amoebicidal activity of known 5-nitroimidazole derivatives and CG 10213-Go in golden hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus, infected in the liver or caecum or both with trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica.

CG 10213-Go, a 5-nitroimidazole derivative synthesized at the CIBA-Geigy Research Centre, Bombay, proved superior to such currently used 5-nitroimidazole derivatives as metronidazole, ornidazole, secnidazole, tinidazole and nimorazole, against experimental amoebic infections of the liver and caecum in a golden hamster model. CG 10213-Go is now undergoing clinical trials.
