ABSTRACT Twenty-one high frequency solderers, who had been exposed to cadmium (Cd) from a solder for periods ranging from 1 month to 18 years (median 8 months; present time-weighted average 30 nmol/m3; particle size below 1μm) had Cd levels ranging from < 10 to 440 nmol/l in blood and from < 0·5 to 27 μmol/mol creatinine in urine. Individual workers showed considerable variations in blood Cd levels with time, but less variation in urine levels. The metabolism of the chlorinated ethylenes may be explained by the formation of chloroethylene epoxides as the first intermediate products. The evidence indicates that these epoxides rearrange with migration of chlorine to form chloroacetaldehydes and chloroacetyl chlorides. Galactose metabolism occupies a central position in modern biology through its relationship to cell surface antigenicity and its metabolic function as a component of glycolipids and glycoproteins. Disturbances in three fundamental reaction sequences of this hexose have led to a delineation of pathways of the chemistry resulting in the understanding of its metabolic fate. These inherited disorders of metabolism are prototypes for the application of nutritional therapy of biochemical genetic defects.

In our studies, high total bilirubin values in the plasma were noted in cases of Friedreich's ataxia. A bimodal distribution of the values indicated the possible presence of two subgroups of patients. In these kindred, we demonstrated an elevation in unconjugated bilirubin with features similar to those reported in Gilbert's syndrome: normal liver function tests, elevation after fasting and day to day variability. The degradation of haemoglobin haeme of senescent red blood cells - involving NADPH-dependent haeme oxygenase and biliverdin reductase - in the reticuloendothelial cells of the spleen, bone marrow and liver accounts for 80 to 90% of the 250 to 300 mg of bilirubin formed in 24 hours. Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium content was determined in the blood plasma, erythrocytes and the 24-hour urine. There was revealed an increased sodium content in erythrocytes, a fall of plasma potassium level, a reduction of urinary potassium excretion and of potassium-magnesium coefficient of the urine; a tendency to increase in the calcium and magnesium level was seen in erythrocytes. Only calcium content in erythrocytes became normal after the treatment.

The body's calcium economy is determined by the relationship between the intestinal absorption of calcium, the renal handling of calcium, and by the movements of calcium in and out of the skeleton.
