Morphological and molecular assessment of muscle metacercariae infecting tench Tinca tinca from fish farms and wild populations in Germany.

Fish can be infected with metacercariae (the final larval stage) of different species of potentially zoonotic digenetic trematodes (flukes). The fish-borne zoonotic trematodes thus compromise food safety and present a major threat for human health. Reducing the risk of human infections requires careful assessment and accurate taxonomic identification of these parasites. Here, we analysed metacercariae in muscle tissue of tench (Tinca tinca), sampled between March and September 2022 from three fish farms and three natural waterbodies in Germany. Whenever possible, we combined morphological and

Molecular and morphological characterization of Dollfustrema bagarii (Digenea: Bucephalidae) metacercariae from aquaculture channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in northern Vietnam.

White grub metacercariae were found in the livers and kidneys of diseased specimens of an introduced channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque), in Vietnam. Based on morphological features and 28S rDNA sequence analysis, the isolated metacercariae were identified as Dollfustrema bagarii (Digenea: Bucephalidae) Moravec & Sey. Histopathological examination shows that encysted metacercariae can change the tissue structure of the infected organs and is often accompanied by haemorrhaging and the presence of eosinophilic granular cell infiltration. Degenerative changes were also observed.

New locality record for Haplorchoides mehrai and possible interactions with Opisthorchis viverrini metacercariae in cyprinid fishes in Northeast Thailand.

Metacercariae of Opisthorchis viverrini, a carcinogenic liver fluke, and Haplorchoides sp., a trematode maturing in catfish, are commonly found in cyprinid fish, the second intermediate hosts of both flukes. However, the specific identity of Haplorchoides sp. in Thailand and a precise assessment of the effects of co-infections with O. viverrini have never been clarified. Therefore, we aimed to identify the species of Haplorchoides and to investigate possible interactions of the two trematode species in cyprinid fishes. Based on the morphology and morphometry of the cercaria, metacercaria, and

Studies on host specificity in Paragonimus westermani: II. Histochemical and cytochemical characterization of metacercariae and worms from rats and dogs.

Histochemical tests were done on newly excysted metacercariae and worms recovered from an abnormal host (rat) and the definitive host (dog) for some oxidoreductases, phosphatases and glycosidases. The results demonstrate that rat worms have enzymatic distribution and intensities more similar to those of metacercariae than to adult worms from dogs. Ultracytochemical examination of acid and alkaline phosphatase and Mg-ATPase activity was also carried out. Acid phosphatase activity occurred exceptionally in the excretory bladder and caeca of dog worms. No activity was observed in rat worms except

Revisiting the diversity of freshwater fish trematode metacercariae in cenotes (sinkholes) of Yucatán: molecular characterisation and comments on their phylogenetic interrelationships.

The limestone soil of the Yucatán Peninsula is highly permeable, allowing fluvial waters to filter into the aquifer, resulting in the absence of rivers on the surface and the formation of underground reservoirs that, on some occasions, open to the surface, forming the so-called cenotes (or sinkholes). Information about the freshwater fish parasite diversity of cenotes in the Yucatán Peninsula is scarce. Only 50 cenotes of the approximately 9,000 occurring in the peninsula have been sampled to assess the fish parasite fauna. Available information predates the molecular era and is based on morph

First integrative study of the diversity and specificity of metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum Dubois, 1936 from native and introduced fishes in the Caribbean.

Metacercariae of the genus Posthodiplostomum are often recorded in freshwater fish hosts. While the diversity and taxonomy of this genus are receiving increasing attention in molecular phylogenetic studies, available data remain geographically biased. Most molecular studies of Posthodiplostomum and morphologically similar (neascus) worms originate in North America and Europe and Asia (more than 60% of DNA sequences are from USA and Canada), with few data currently available from the Neotropics, where high host diversity suggests high and under-sampled parasite diversity. In this study, we repo

A new species of Clinostomum Leidy, 1856 based on molecular and morphological analysis of metacercariae from African siluriform fishes.

In the Afrotropic region, the genus Clinostomum is represented by four accepted and four unnamed species distinguished using molecular data. Here, we describe one of the four unnamed species as Clinostomum ukolii n. sp. based on metacercariae from siluriform fishes (Synodontis batensoda, Schilbe intermedius) collected in Nigeria and South Africa. The new species is distinguished by molecular data (39 new sequences of partial cytochrome c oxidase I ≥ 6.7% divergent from those of other species) and morphological differences from named and unnamed species in the same region. Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Metacercaria of Tylodelphys (Digenea: Diplostomidae) from the Piscine Host, Mystus tengara from India.

The diversity and taxonomy of diplostomids infecting freshwater fishes of the Indian region are predominantly poorly known. Yet compared to other trematodes, identification and discrimination of diplostomid metacercaria are difficult using morphology and site of infection. The present study provides the first molecular study of a Tylodelphys sp. from India. Specimens of Tylodelphys were collected from the vitreous humor of the eyes and from the brains of siluriform fish, Mystus tengara (Siluriformes: Bagridae) from Hastinapur, Meerut (U.P.), India. Taxonomic studies were performed on the basis

Evaluation of the antiparasitic efficacy of praziquantel against Prohemistomum vivax (Cyathocotylidae) metacercariae in naturally infected African catfish (Clarias gariepinus).

Prohemistomum vivax (Cyathocotylidae) is a significant parasitic threat in Egyptian African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) aquaculture, causing tissue damage, high prevalence, and economic losses. This study evaluated the dose-dependent efficacy of praziquantel against naturally occurring P. vivax encysted metacercariae (EMC) under controlled laboratory conditions and explored its potential mode of action via molecular docking. A total of 105 naturally infected catfish (150-250 g) were randomly assigned to seven groups. Each treatment consisted of three independent replicate tanks (experimental

Morphological and molecular phylogeny of Clinostomum sp. (Digenea: Clinostomidae) metacercariae, using DNA barcode from a South American freshwater fish.

Here, we present a comprehensive morphological and molecular phylogenetic analysis of Clinostomum sp. (Digenea: Clinostomidae) metacercariae parasitizing two freshwater fish species from Southeast Brazil: Serrasalmus spilopleura (piranha) and Callichthys callichthys (tambuatá). The morphological examination revealed distinct characteristics of metacercariae in each host. Using the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene barcode region, we obtained DNA sequences that allowed for accurate phylogenetic placement. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that Clinostomum sp. HM41 (metacercariae), isolated from S.

Paragonimus proliferus Metacercaria-derived antigens mitigate DSS-Induced Ulcerative Colitis via immunomodulation and gut microbiota reconfiguration.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel illness with few treatment options, which means that new ways to treat it are needed. This study examined the protective effects and mechanisms of Paragonimus proliferus metacercaria-derived antigens (PmAg) in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse ulcerative colitis model. We discovered that intraperitoneal delivery of PmAg substantially mitigated colitis severity, as demonstrated by decreased weight loss, lower disease activity index scores, maintained colon length, and enhanced histopathological findings. Mechanistically, PmAg in

Molecular and morphological characterization of the metacercariae of two species of diplostomid trematodes (Platyhelminthes, Digenea) in freshwater fishes of the Batalha River, Brazil.

The Diplostomidae include a large group of flatworms with complex life cycles and are frequently found parasitizing the eyes and central nervous system of freshwater fishes. The morphological identification of the metacercariae at species level is not always possible. Thus, molecular tools have become essential to assist in the parasite species determination. This study was aimed at describing two diplostomid metacercariae found in freshwater fish in São Paulo, Brazil, based on morphological characters and in the genetic characterization of COI sequences. Our results showed that the two recogn

An investigation of the host-specificity of metacercariae of species of Apophallus (Digenea: Heterophyidae) in freshwater fishes using morphological, experimental and molecular methods.

Metacercariae of species of the genus Apophallus Lühe, 1909, infecting the fins and skin of freshwater fishes, frequently cause black spot disease. Two species, Apophallus muehlingi (Jägerskiöld, 1899) and A. donicus (Skrjabin & Lindtrop, 1919), are known to occur in Hungarian fishes. It has generally been thought that metacercariae of A. muehlingi infect cyprinid fishes, whereas those of A. donicus develop in percids. As part of a morphological, experimental and molecular study, metacercariae were collected from 99 infected specimens of five cyprinid hosts (Abramis brama, Blicca bjoerkna, Cho
