Impacts of Smoking and Stomach Disorders on Essential Elements in Biological Samples of Cement and Glass Industrial Workers.

The infection caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) disrupts the metabolism and absorption of essential trace elements. Stomach disorders are related to changes in essential trace element metabolism caused by increased toxic metal exposure and H. pylori infection. The aim of the work is to link the development of stomach-related illnesses to an imbalance of essential trace and toxic metals. We have investigated the variations in essential trace elements such zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and copper and toxic metals like lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in biological (scalp hair, blood) samples of glass

[A biotest for determining human skin contamination by platinoids].

Being toxic, platinum metallic compounds can cause a number of allergic diseases called platinosis. Wide industrial application of these compounds specifies the necessity for developing the technique of platinoid identification on workers' clothes and skin both for preventive purposes and for determination of neglected loss of metals. Compared to the available methods the proposed biotest based on changes in reaction kinetics of bacterial luminescence enables one to raise sensitivity and accuracy of measurements of platinum metals' concentrations. By means of this technique, the sorption effec

Identification of occupations at high risk of exposure to environmental pollutants: A biomonitoring study using KoNEHS cycle 4 (2018-2020).

Occupational exposure to environmental hazardous chemicals poses health risks, yet nationwide evidence across diverse occupational groups remains limited. This study aimed to assess exposure levels to environmental hazardous chemicals across occupational groups among Korean adults and to identify chemicals and occupations potentially overlooked in current management systems. Data were obtained from 2974 adults in the Fourth Korean National Environmental Health Survey (2018-2020). Occupations were classified into 21 groups based on the Korean Standard Classification of Occupations. Thirty-two c

Nasal toxicity, carcinogenicity, and olfactory uptake of metals.

Occupational exposures to inhalation of certain metal dusts or aerosols can cause loss of olfactory acuity, atrophy of the nasal mucosa, mucosal ulcers, perforated nasal septum, or sinonasal cancer. Anosmia and hyposmia have been observed in workers exposed to Ni- or Cd-containing dusts in alkaline battery factories, nickel refineries, and cadmium industries. Ulcers of the nasal mucosa and perforated nasal septum have been reported in workers exposed to Cr(VI) in chromate production and chrome plating, or to As(III) in arsenic smelters. Atrophy of the olfactory epithelium has been observed in

Lipid peroxidation and oxidative status compared in workers at a bottom ash recovery plant and fly ash treatment plants.

Fly ash and ambient emissions of municipal solid waste incinerators contain polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), other organic compounds, metals, and gases. Hazardous substances such as PCDD/Fs, mercury vapors and other silicates, and the components of bottom ash and fly ash elevate the oxidative damage. We compared oxidative damage in workers exposed to hazardous substances at a bottom ash recovery plant and 3 fly ash treatment plants in Taiwan by measuring their levels of plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and urine 8-hydroxydeoxyg

Exposure to airborne metals in the manufacture and maintenance of hard metal and stellite blades.

This study evaluated the exposure of Finnish workers to airborne metals. It was conducted in 16 workplaces; 8 tool manufacturing companies (3 of which specialize in the maintenance of hard metal blades) and 8 blade repair shops in the mechanical wood-processing industry. The main emphasis of the study was on exposure in servicing (resharpening), especially involving wet-tip grinding processes. The results show that workers grinding hard metal blades may be exposed to high levels of airborne cobalt even when airborne total dust concentrations are low. The respirable proportion of the total dust

A pilot study on neopterin levels and tryptophan degradation in zinc-exposed galvanization workers.

Hot-dip galvanization is a zinc-coating process to protect the metal items from corrosion. Zinc oxide nanoaerosol fume rising from hot metal bath surface in nano dimensions contains the greatest risk for workers in galvanization process. In the present study, it was evaluated whether inhalation of zinc causes any alteration in cellular immunity and tryptophan degradation by measuring neopterin, tryptophan, kynurenine, and zinc levels in 63 male galvanization workers and 23 male office personnel as controls. Serum and urinary zinc levels were found as 102.43 ± 4.74 and 0.66 ± 0.05 μg/dL in work

Proposed criteria for mixed-dust pneumoconiosis: definition, descriptions, and guidelines for pathologic diagnosis and clinical correlation.

We defined mixed-dust pneumoconiosis (MDP) pathologically as a pneumoconiosis showing dust macules or mixed-dust fibrotic nodules (MDF), with or without silicotic nodules (SN), in an individual with a history of exposure to mixed dust. We defined the latter arbitrarily as a mixture of crystalline silica and nonfibrous silicates. According to our definition of MDP, therefore, MDF should outnumber SN in the lung to make a pathologic diagnosis of MDP. In the absence of confirmation of exposure, mineralogic analyses can be used to support the pathologic diagnosis. The clinical diagnosis of MDP req

Airborne particulate metals in the New York City subway: a pilot study to assess the potential for health impacts.

A prior study in New York City observed that airborne concentrations of three metals found in steel - iron, manganese, and chromium - are more than 100 times higher in the subway system than in aboveground air. To investigate the potential for health effects of exposure at these levels, we conducted a pilot study of subway workers comparing personal exposures to steel dust with biomarkers of metal exposure, oxidative stress, and DNA damage in blood and urine samples. Workers wore a personal air sampler operating at 4L/m for one to three work shifts with blood and urine samples collected at the

Malondialdehyde and anion patterns in exhaled breath condensate among subway workers.

BACKGROUND: Underground transportation systems can contribute to the daily particulates and metal exposures for both commuter and subway workers. The redox and metabolic changes in workers exposed to such metal-rich particles have yet to be characterized. We hypothesize that the distribution of nitrosative/oxidative stress and related metabolic biomarkers in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) are modified depending on exposures. RESULTS: Particulate number and size as well as mass concentration and airborne metal content were measured in three groups of nine subway workers (station agents, locom

Birth defects in infants born to employees of a microelectronics and business machine manufacturing facility.

BACKGROUND: Concerns about solvent releases from a microelectronics/business machine manufacturing facility in upstate New York led to interest in the health of former workers, including this investigation of birth defects in children of male and female employees. METHODS: Children born 1983 to 2001 to facility employees were enumerated and matched to New York State's Congenital Malformations Registry. Reported structural birth defects were compared with numbers expected from state rates (excluding New York City), generating standardized prevalence ratios (SPRs). Exposure assessors classified

Hard metal lung disease and pneumothorax.

This case report describes a case of spontaneous pneumothorax in a metal grinder that failed to resolve with medical management. A lung biopsy taken during the subsequent thoracotomy revealed changes that were characteristic of giant cell interstitial pneumonia, as seen in hard metal disease. Pneumothorax has been described in many forms of interstitial lung disease but not in this type of occupational disease. Awareness of this possible association can result in: (1) the removal of an affected worker from his adverse work environment before advanced disease develops; and (2) the safe control
