Proteomic profiling of parthanatos and the neuroprotective potential of sodium perborate tetrahydrate.

Parthanatos is a caspase-independent form of programmed cell death triggered by PARP-1 overactivation and mitochondrial dysfunction, implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we performed a proteomic analysis of SH-SY5Y neuronal cells undergoing parthanatos and evaluated the neuroprotective effects of sodium perborate tetrahydrate (SPT), an inorganic boron-containing compound. LC-MS/MS analysis revealed significant alterations in mitochondrial respiration, DNA repair, and inflammatory signaling pathways. Proteins such as MT-CO2, CYC1, POLR2L, and SLC25A5 -implicated in Parkinson

Adaptation to metal(loid)s in strain Mucilaginibacter rubeus P2 involves novel arsenic resistance genes and mechanisms.

Arsenic is a ubiquitous environmental toxi substance that affects human health. Compared to inorganic arsenicals, reduced organoarsenicals are more toxic, and some of them are recognized as antibiotics, such as methylarsenite [MAs(III)] and arsinothricin (2-amino-4-(hydroxymethylarsinoyl)butanoate, or AST). To date, organoarsenicals such as MAs(V) and roxarsone [Rox(V)] are still used in agriculture and animal husbandry. How bacteria deal with both inorganic and organoarsenic species is unclear. Recently, we identified an environmental isolate Mucilaginibacter rubeus P2 that has adapted to hig

Evaluation of the Flexibility for Catalytic Ozonation of Dichloromethane over Urchin-Like CuMnOx in Flue Gas with Complicated Components.

The evaluation of the poisoning effect of complex components in practical gas on DCM (dichloromethane) catalytic ozonation is of great significance for enhancing the technique's environmental flexibility. Herein, Ca, Pb, As, and NO/SO2 were selected as a typical alkaline-earth metal, heavy metal, metalloid, and acid gas, respectively, to evaluate their interferences on catalytic behaviors and surface properties of an optimized urchin-like CuMn catalyst. Ca/Pb loading weakens the formation of oxygen vacancies, oxygen mobility, and acidity due to the fusion of Mn-Ca/Pb-O, leading to their inferi

The Synthesis of [Sn10(Si(SiMe3)3)4]2 - Using a Metastable Sn(I) Halide Solution Synthesized via a Co-condensation Technique.

The number of well-characterized metalloid tin clusters, synthesized by applying the disproportionation of a metastable Sn(I) halide in the presence of a sterically demanding ligand, has increased in recent years. The metastable Sn(I) halide is synthesized at "outer space conditions" via the preparative co-condensation technique. Thereby, the subhalide is synthesized in an oven at high temperatures, around 1,300 °C, and at reduced pressure by the reaction of elemental tin with hydrogen halide gas (e.g., HCl). The subhalide (e.g., SnCl) is trapped within a matrix of an inert solvent, like tolue

Source-oriented probabilistic risk assessment of sediment heavy metal(loid)s in a typical fireworks-production basin with mixed industrial and agricultural influences.

Fireworks production introduces persistent heavy metals and metalloids into river sediments, yet source-specific ecological and health risks under mixed land uses remain unclear. Here, we developed an integrated framework coupling Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) with Fractional Moment-Maximum Entropy (FM-MEM)-based probabilistic health risk assessment for Liuyang River Basin, the world's largest fireworks base, to trace source-to-risk pathways of eight metalloids: Cr, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb. Seasonal variation, spatial patterns, chemical speciation, source contributions, and health

Understanding the contribution of toxicant exposures to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) are modulated by gene-environment (GxE) interactions across the lifespan. Variants of specific genes increase AD risk and synergize with exposures to environmental toxicants ("exposome"), including neurotoxic metals and metalloids such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As). These neurotoxicants enter the body (via drinking water, contaminated food, and airborne particulates), transit in blood, cross the blood-brain barrier, and distribute in brain where the retained toxicant disrupts central nervous system development, structure, and f

Goethite-based carbon foam nanocomposites for concurrently immobilizing arsenic and metals in polluted soils.

Although different amendments have been used for the immobilization of metals and metalloids in contaminated soils, in most of them there are still important challenges that need to be faced in order to achieve an optimal result. In this work, a new material based on a carbon foam impregnated with goethite nanoneedles has been developed with the aim of evaluating its effect on the mobility and availability of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in an industrial soil. For this purpose, leaching, sequential extraction and phytotoxicity studies have been carried out. The results were compared with the same car

Quantification of liver iron overload disease with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemochromatosis is the most frequent, identified, genetic disorder in Caucasians affecting about 1 in 1000 people of Northern European ancestry, where the associated genetic defect (homozygosity for the p.Cys282Tyr polymorphism in the HFE gene) has a prevalence of approximately 1:200. The disorder is characterized by excess iron stores in the body. Due to the incomplete disease penetrance of disease-associated genotype, genetic testing and accurate quantification of hepatic iron content by histological grading of stainable iron, quantitative chemical determination of iro

Potential ecological and human health risks of heavy metals in surface soils associated with iron ore mining in Pahang, Malaysia.

The composition of heavy metals (and metalloid) in surface soils of iron ore mine-impacted areas has been evaluated of their potential ecological and human health risks. The mining areas included seven selected locations in the vicinity of active and abandoned iron ore-mining sites in Pahang, Malaysia. Heavy metals such as Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Co, Pb, Cr, Ni, and Cd and metalloid As were present in the mining soils of the studied area, while Cu was found exceeding the soil guideline value at all sampling locations. However, the assessment of the potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated low ec

Selenium speciation in human serum and its implications for epidemiologic research: a cross-sectional study.

Observational studies addressing the relation between selenium and human health, particularly cancer risk, yielded inconsistent results, while most recent randomized trials showed a fairly consistent pattern suggesting null or adverse effects of the metalloid. One of the most plausible explanations for such inconsistencies is inadequate exposure assessment in observational studies, commonly carried out by measuring total Se content without taking into account the specific exposure to the individual chemical forms of the metalloid, whose toxic and nutritional properties may vary greatly. Effect of goethite-loaded montmorillonite on immobilization of metal(loid)s and the micro-ecological soil response in non-ferrous metal smelting areas.

In this work, the immobilization stabilization and mechanism of heavy metal(loid)s by goethite loaded montmorillonite (GMt) were investigated, and the soil microbial response was explored. The simulated acid rain leaching experiment showed that GMt had a higher acid tolerance and the more stable heavy metal(loid)s fixation ability. The soil incubation demonstrated that GMt significantly decreased the available Cd, Zn, Pb and As concentration. Interestingly, higher immobilization of heavy metals was observed by GMt in highly acid leached and acidic soils. The richness and diversity of bacterial

Sulfide-induced repartition of chromium associated with schwertmannite in acid mine drainage: Impacts and mechanisms.

The cycling of Fe/S is often related to the formation and fate of schwertmannite which is particularly suitable as a scavenger for heavy metals and metalloids in acid mine drainage (AMD). However, the interactions between reactivity of S(-II) and schwertmannite with structurally incorporated Cr(VI) remain elusive. This work evaluated dissolution experiments in combination with XRD, SEM, FTIR, TEM, and XPS characterization to provide detailed information regarding the transformation of schwertmannite induced by S(-II) following changes in pH, Cr loading, and S(-II) concentration. Our results fo

Disorders of metal metabolism.

Trace elements are chemical elements needed in minute amounts for normal physiology. Some of the physiologically relevant trace elements include iodine, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, selenium, cobalt and molybdenum. Of these, some are metals, and in particular, transition metals. The different electron shells of an atom carry different energy levels, with those closest to the nucleus being lowest in energy. The number of electrons in the outermost shell determines the reactivity of such an atom. The electron shells are divided in sub-shells, and in particular the third shell has s, p and d su

Si(SiMe3)2SiPh3 - a ligand for novel sub-valent tin cluster compounds.

For the synthesis of metalloid tin cluster compounds applying the disproportionation reaction of a Sn(i) halide, silyl ligands, especially the symmetric Si(SiMe3)3 has proven to be extremely useful. Silyl ligands of lower symmetry where e.g. one SiMe3 group is substituted with SiPh3 are thereby unexplored, although the synthesis of the anionic silyl precursors is quite easy, referring to previously described methods. Here the synthesis of the silanide [Si(SiMe3)2(SiPh3)](-) as its potassium () as well as its lithium salt () in excellent yield is presented. proved to be a suitable starting mate

Functionalized graphene oxide for clinical glucose biosensing in urine and serum samples.

A novel clinical glucose biosensor fabricated using functionalized metalloid-polymer (silver-silica coated with polyethylene glycol) hybrid nanoparticles on the surface of a graphene oxide nanosheet is reported. The cyclic voltammetric response of glucose oxidase modification on the surface of a functionalized graphene oxide electrode showed a surface-confined reaction and an effective redox potential near zero volts, with a wide linearity of 0.1-20 mM and a sensitivity of 7.66 μA mM(-1) cm(-2). The functionalized graphene oxide electrode showed a better electrocatalytic response toward oxidat

Phragmites australis and Scirpus holoschoenus for metal(loid)s polluted groundwater remediation: a wetland mesocosm study with different exposure regimes.

Mitigation of pollutants is crucial for long-term sustainable management of groundwater and freshwater systems and ecosystem health. However, the potential of nature-based attenuation strategies, such as phytoremediation, in the presence of multi-element contamination and under changing exposure conditions, remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the potential of Phragmites australis and Scirpus holoschoenus for metal(loid) remediation in contaminated groundwater. The investigation involved both medium (4 L) static and large dynamic (65 L) mesocosms to simulate d

Impact of Tellurite on the Metabolism of Paenibacillus pabuli AL109b With Flagellin Production Explaining High Reduction Capacity.

Tellurium (Te) is a metalloid with scarce and scattered abundance but with an increased interest in human activity for its uses in emerging technologies. As is seen for other metals and metalloids, the result of mining activity and improper disposal of high-tech devices will lead to niches with increased abundance of Te. This metalloid will be more available to bacteria and represent an increasing selective pressure. This environmental problem may constitute an opportunity to search for microorganisms with genetic and molecular mechanisms of microbial resistance to Te toxic anions. Organisms f

Selenium bioaccumulation in stocked fish as an indicator of fishery potential in pit lakes on reclaimed coal mines in Alberta, Canada.

Pit lakes are a common reclamation strategy for open pit mines; however, there is a concern about their water quality and suitability as fish habitat because they are often contaminated by metals or metalloids. This study assessed the exposure of fish and invertebrates to selenium (Se) and other metals and metalloids in pit lakes formed by open pit coal mining in Tertiary (thermal coal) and in Cretaceous (metallurgical coal) bedrock. Juvenile hatchery rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, were stocked into two thermal coal pit lakes (water Se < 2 μg/L, low

Study on immobilization of composite pollutants in antimony mining areas by target-enriched sulfate-reducing bacteria from antimony tailings.

Remediating composite pollution in antimony mining areas, characterized by coexisting anionic metalloids (Sb, As) and cationic heavy metals (e.g., Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn), remains a significant challenge. This study demonstrates the effective immobilization of these complex pollutants using target-enriched sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in heavy metal pollution remediation research. Indigenous SRB were enriched from antimony tailings and their application in remediating typical composite-polluted wastewater and tailings in antimony mining areas. The SRB community enriched in modified Postgate medium
