Evaluating Large Language Models' Ability Using a Psychiatric Screening Tool Based on Metaphor and Sarcasm Scenarios.

Metaphors and sarcasm are precious fruits of our highly evolved social communication skills. However, children with the condition then known as Asperger syndrome are known to have difficulties in comprehending sarcasm, even if they possess adequate verbal IQs for understanding metaphors. Accordingly, researchers had employed a screening test that assesses metaphor and sarcasm comprehension to distinguish Asperger syndrome from other conditions with similar external behaviors (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). This study employs a standardized test to evaluate recent large langua

Betting is Loving and Bettors are Predators: A Conceptual Metaphor Approach to Online Sports Betting Advertising.

The legalisation of online gambling in multiple territories has caused a growth in the exposure of consumers to online sports betting (OSB) advertising. While some efforts have been made to understand the visible structure of betting promotional messages, little is known about the latent components of OSB advertisements. The present study sought to address this issue by examining the metaphorical conceptualisation of OSB advertising. A sample of Spanish and British television OSB advertisements from 2014 to 2016 was analysed (N = 133). Following Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory,

WAR as slogan, HAT as strategy: metaphorical construction of poverty alleviation in Chinese political discourse.

Political metaphors play a crucial role in shaping public perception and legitimizing policy, yet their use in China's poverty alleviation discourse remains underexplored. This study investigates the major conceptual metaphors in Chinese governmental discourse on poverty alleviation, drawing on a 33,104-word corpus compiled from official reports over the past decade. Following the Metaphor Identification Procedure VU University Amsterdam (MIPVU) procedure for metaphor identification, the study identifies four dominant source domains: WAR, PATH, COMPETITION, and HAT. Guided by Charteris-Black's

Deciphering the complexity of enteric niches in Hirschsprung disease: from metaphorical insights to therapeutic transformation.

Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is a congenital disorder marked by the absence of ganglion cells in the distal bowel, resulting in severe constipation and bowel obstruction. Surgery is currently the primary treatment for HSCR. However, post-surgical outcomes are unsatisfactory, merely alleviating symptoms of intestinal obstruction. Up to one-third of HSCR patients continue to experience gastrointestinal issues post-surgery, which severely impacts their growth and development and may even threaten their lives. Cell transplantation represents a promising strategy for the radical treatment of HSCR bu

Metaphorical markers of pain catastrophizing, depression, anxiety, and pain interference in people with chronic pain.

Metaphor to communicate chronic pain can reflect psychological appraisals of pain, and its impact, and may be beneficial in enhancing understanding of pain, its aetiology, and facilitating communication and shared decision-making. This cross-sectional study examined metaphor use and relationships with pain intensity, pain interference, mood, and pain catastrophizing. Seventy participants with chronic pain completed measures of depression, anxiety and stress, the Brief Pain Inventory, and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. They provided descriptions of their pain through metaphor and a primary con

Hippocampus and amygdala: An insight-related network involved in metaphorical solution to mental distress problem.

This study was designed to determine whether metaphorical solutions to mental distress problems result in an insightful mental experience and activate the hippocampus and amygdala: areas associated with insight. We recruited 22 healthy university students. Trials presented 75 micro-counseling scenarios while event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was applied to detect neural responses. Each scenario included a mental distress problem and one of the following solution types: metaphorical, literal, or problem-restatement. The results revealed that, compared with literal solut

Inhibitory reversal of morpheme-mediated semantic priming in L2 Chinese: embodiment conflicts in conventional action metaphor processing.

Semantic priming typically facilitates lexical access; however, this facilitation may reverse into inhibition under certain interferences, such as embodied conflicts in Second Language (L2) processing. For adult L2 learners, automatic literal sensorimotor simulations may disrupt metaphorical integration, potentially inducing inhibitory reversal in conventional action metaphors [e.g., Chinese " "(chī kuī, literally "eat loss," figuratively "suffer the loss")]-a key gap in bilingual cognition. This study examines this reversal in L2 Chinese metaphor processing versus L1. Forty-three Vietnamese-s

Semantics is crucial for the right-hemisphere involvement in metaphor processing: evidence from mouth asymmetry during speaking.

Research on the neural basis of metaphor provides contradicting evidence about the role of right and left hemispheres. We used the mouth-opening asymmetry technique to investigate the relative involvement of the two hemispheres whilst right-handed healthy male participants explained the meaning of English phrases. This technique is based on the contralateral cortical control of the facial musculature and reflects the relative hemispheric involvement during different cognitive tasks. In particular, right-handers show a right-sided mouth asymmetry (right side of the mouth opens wider than the le

Self-medication as metaphor: why psychiatry should revise an (in)convenient narrative about substance use and mental disorders.

The term self-medication remains an influential narrative to explain why some patients with mental health problems use psychoactive substances. This Feature offers a conceptual critique of its broad use in psychiatry. We argue that self-medication often functions less as a testable explanatory model and more as a rhetorical metaphor: clinically convenient, yet scientifically under-specified and normatively loaded. Reviewing large epidemiological studies, ecological momentary assessment and longitudinal sequencing, we noted that while evidence supporting coping motives and negative reinforcemen

The Field of Gender Through Metaphors: The Dilemma of Female and Male Referees in the Minds of Football Fans.

The perception of football as a male-dominated sport by society, coupled with the socio-cultural and economic barriers faced by women, has constrained their presence in the domain of football and revealed the manifestation of gender norms within the sport. This exclusion further masculinizes sport, negatively affecting social unity and cohesion, and deepening inequality within sport. Within this context, the study seeks to reveal how football fans perceive female and male referees through metaphorical representations. Participants, selected using purposive sampling, are individuals who regular

Common brain activation and connectivity patterns supporting the generation of creative uses and creative metaphors.

Recent studies and reviews suggest that creative thinking is at least partly a domain-general cognitive ability, dependent on consistent patterns of brain activity including co-activation of the executive control and default mode networks. However, the degree to which the generation of ideas in different creative tasks relies on common brain activity remains unknown. In this fMRI study, participants were asked to generate creative ideas in both a uses generation task and a metaphor production task. Whole-brain analysis showed that generation of creative uses (relative to conventional uses) act

Teaching metaphorical extensions of private events through rival-model observation to children with autism.

The study evaluated the efficacy of observational learning using the rival-model technique in teaching three children with autism to state metaphorical statements about emotions when provided a picture, as well as to intraverbally state an appropriate emotion when provided a scenario and corresponding metaphorical emotion. The results provide a preliminary evaluation of how an observational teaching strategy may be effective in teaching children with autism to correctly tact emotions when given metaphors.
