Psammomatous melanotic schwannoma is a very rare soft tissue neoplasm, which is clinically, biologically, and histologically distinct from conventional schwannoma. A significant proportion of patients may present with Carney's heritable complex of myxomas, spotty pigmentation, and endocrine overactivity. Typically, the lesion is composed of spindled and epithelioid cells displaying abundant intracytoplasmic melanin pigment, together with the formation of psammoma bodies. We report an epithelioid example of this tumor arising in the anterior abdominal wall of a 23-year-old man. A unique feature

There is good evidence to suggest that gastric metaplasia in the proximal duodenum and Helicobacter pylori gastritis are essential requirements for the development of duodenal ulceration in most cases. Gastric metaplasia is most likely to be a defence response or adaptation to excess acid reaching the duodenum. The appearance of gastric-type epithelium over the duodenal villi probably results from substitution by cells migrating from Brunner's gland ducts. These metaplastic foci provide sites for colonization by H. pylori passing through the duodenum; the organisms do not attach to native duod

The prevalence of antral intestinal metaplasia (IM) in underlying Helicobacter pylori (HP) gastritis was studied in biopsy specimens of the antral mucosa obtained from 2,692 patients with histologically proven HP gastritis. The prevalence of IM varied in the groups investigated: 47.4% in gastric ulcers, 30.5% in pyloric ulcers, 16.8% in duodenal ulcers, 21.8% in gastritis with no lesions and 9.8% in chronic antral erosions (p < 0.001). A hypothetical model for the role of HP in the development of IM is presented: HP probably promotes mucosal regeneration. The prolonged stimulatory effect on re

The pathogenesis of gallbladder adenocarcinoma(GBC) remains inadequately elucidated. While its association with intestinal metaplasia (IM) has been acknowledged, there is a paucity of evidence connecting GBC to the most prevalent metaplastic type-pseudopyloric metaplasia (PPM). Given the morphological similarities between PPM and spasmolytic polypeptide-expressing metaplasia (SPEM), a recognized gastric precancerous condition, we propose that trefoil factor 2 (TFF2)-positive PPM may represent a cellular origin of GBC. Furthermore, we examine the role of the emerging therapeutic target claudin-

Anecdotal evidence suggests that pancreatic acinar metaplasia (PAM) and intestinal metaplasia (IM) overlap infrequently at the gastroesophageal junction/distal esophagus (GEJ/DE). The goal of this study was to evaluate the significance of PAM at GEJ/DE in relation to IM in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Group 1 comprised 230 consecutive patients with GEJ/DE biopsies (80.6% with GERD symptoms). Group 2 comprised 151 patients with established GERD and GEJ/DE biopsies taken before Nissen fundoplication. Group 3 comprised 540 consecutive patients used for a follow-up study o

Gastric hyperplastic polyps are often discovered unexpectedly during endoscopy, usually arising in the antrum. Polypectomy is recommended when findings such as size >1 cm, dysplasia, ulceration, or iron deficiency anemia are present. We report a rare case of osseous metaplasia in a pyloric polyp causing obstructive symptoms that resolved following polypectomy, including early satiety, abdominal pain, and bloating. Fewer than 10 cases of osseous metaplasia in gastric polyps have been reported, and limited data suggest it is benign. This case describes potential predisposing factors, summarizes

Uterine adenofibroma is an extremely rare, benign, mixed epithelial and mesenchymal tumor, and its imaging characteristics remain poorly characterized because only a small number of cases have been reported. Accurate preoperative diagnosis can be difficult, as the clinical and radiological features of uterine adenofibroma often overlap with those of endometrial carcinoma, adenosarcoma, and other lesions of the endometrial cavity. Very few studies have documented detailed MRI findings, and further case reports are needed to establish distinctive imaging patterns. We report the case of an 84-yea

Osseous metaplasia of the endometrium is a rare and intriguing pathological condition characterized by the presence of bony tissue within the endometrial cavity. This phenomenon can have significant clinical implications, particularly in the context of infertility. The etiology of osseous metaplasia remains unclear, although various hypotheses have been proposed, including chronic inflammation, dystrophic calcification, and residual embryonic tissue. Clinically, patients may present with secondary infertility, abnormal uterine bleeding, or pelvic pain. Diagnosis can be made based on ultrasonog

BACKGROUND: Incomplete intestinal metaplasia (IM) is reportedly associated with higher gastric cancer (GC) risk than its complete variant. AGA Guidelines recommend including IM subtyping in routine pathology reports. This study assesses the prevalence of complete versus incomplete IM in gastric conditions with different GC risks.
METHODS: IM subtyping (complete vs. incomplete) and grading (IM extension: G1: ≤30%; G2: >30%) were assessed in 386 patients with IM + ve gastric biopsy sets that included both antral and oxyntic samples. Cases were categorized as: (a) IM foci in otherwise normal muc

Pilomatricomas are frequently misdiagnosed benign neoplasms of the skin derived from hair matrix cells. Pilomatricomas may undergo calcification and ossification although the latter is rare and poorly documented, with only eight cases reported since 2006. We present a case of pilomatricoma with osseous metaplasia arising from the scalp in an 87-year-old female patient. She was referred by her general practitioner via the two-week cancer referral pathway, for a suspicious lesion. On examination, there was a 2 x 1cm nodule, with protruding hardened yellow material, on the right side of the patie

Background. Squamous differentiation within the thyroid is seen in a variety of settings. Squamous epithelium is non-native to the thyroid, and its debated origins span reactive metaplasia and developmental/embryologic remnants. Despite a lack of clarity as to its evolution, squamous epithelium may be associated with both neoplastic and non-neoplastic processes. Methods. Thyroid pathology reports spanning a 30-year period were reviewed for terms indicating squamous features. Associated diagnostic and clinical information was collated. Results. Four hundred and twenty seven of 17,452 (2.4%) thy

We herein report a patient who presented with follicular lymphoma. Although the stomach was initially intact, mucosal redness and multiple erosions appeared in the gastric body owing to infiltration of the follicular lymphoma cells. Subsequently, a slightly depressed, white area lacking gastric mucosal structure was detected in the lesser curvature of the gastric cardia and body, where lymphoma cell infiltration was also pathologically observed beneath the stratified squamous epithelium. This case indicated that, although infrequent, prolonged mucosal injury owing to lymphoma infiltration can

ARPC1B is important in the maintenance and assembly of the ARP2/3 complex. Loss of this complex due to ARPC1B mutation results in impairment of actin polymerization and subsequent defects in chemotaxis, cell migration, and DNA repair. Individuals with this rare mutation present in infancy and have abnormal innate and adaptive immune responses. They develop immune-mediated inflammatory disease with associated platelet defects, eosinophilia, rashes, and bowel disease. Recurrent gastrointestinal hemorrhage has been described in known cases. Here, we report a case with endoscopic and histologic fi

INTRODUCTION: Corpus atrophic gastritis (CAG) is associated with intestinal metaplasia (IM) and pseudopyloric metaplasia (PPM). Prospective data on corpus mucosa PPM and its link to the development of gastric cancer (GC) are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the presence of corpus mucosa PPM at baseline and the development of GC at follow-up in patients with CAG.
METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted on patients with consecutive CAG adhering to endoscopic-histological surveillance. Patients were stratified for the presence/absence of corpus PPM wit

OBJECTIVES: Patients with esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) can develop Barrett esophagus as a long-term consequence of their condition. Intestinal metaplasia (IM), a risk factor for developing adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, has not been well characterized in the pediatric population.
METHODS: Retrospective review of patients with EA-TEF followed at 3 academic pediatric centers between the years 1997 and 2014.
RESULTS: Among 542 children and adolescents, 1.3% (7 patients, 5 girls) were diagnosed with IM based on endoscopy and pathology. Six of the patients had EA-TEF ty

Angiosarcomas are rare soft tissue neoplasms accounting for <2% of all sarcomas. Rare cases have been reported in other sites like breast, spleen, liver, bone and bladder. This is a case report of an angiosarcoma of the bladder in a 65 year old lady who came with complaints of haematuria. Ultrasonography and computerized tomography revealed a bladder tumour with calcification, which on cystoscopy also showed a calcified mass. The patient had a past history of carcinoma cervix for which she had undergone surgery and radiotherapy, 22 years ago. Biopsy of the bladder mass showed features of a hig

Osseous metaplasia of the endometrium is a rare disorder associated with the presence of bone in the uterine endometrium. Most patients with this condition presenting with infertility do so owing to the presence of a foreign body in the endometrium. We report a case of a 38-year-old woman who presented with secondary infertility due to osseous metaplasia in the endometrial cavity. She conceived spontaneously after hysteroscopic removal of the bony fragments from the uterus. Uterine osseous metaplasia is a rare cause of infertility that can be easily managed by hysteroscopic removal of the bony

This article describes 2 unusual cases of osseous metaplasia occurring within the eyelid and presents a brief review of the literature on cutaneous calcification. A 62-year-old man sought treatment for an eyelid mass containing osseous metaplasia in an area of lymphoid hyperplasia. An extensive oncologic workup ruled out malignancy. A 46-year-old man with a history of recurrent chalazion sought treatment for a firm mass of the upper eyelid that demonstrated bone formation in an area of sebaceous glands. Both lesions were excised with no further recurrence. Osseous metaplasia of the eyelid is a
