Unexpected deaths occurred in studies involving a nude mouse model of mammary cancer that required subcutaneous implantation of 0.5 mg twenty-one-day release estrogen pellets for growth of the estrogen-dependent mammary tumor xenograft BT474c. Early deaths occurred in female nude mice and were associated with urinary retention, frequently with cystitis. Drug treatment had no effect on the incidence or severity of cystitis. A better understanding of the nature and treatment of colon cancer, and of by metastatic dissemination should be achieved by the use and study of appropriate animal models. Such models can be created by grafting human cancer cells or tumour fragments orthotopically into the colon or caecum of nude mice. This review examines the rationale behind these models and the principal results of orthotopic transplantation. Despite the fact that they require surgical expertise and are time-consuming, they provide valuable information on the mechanism of metastasis and the efficacy of novel treatments.

The development of Brugia pahangi (Nematoda: Filarioidea) was studied in nude (congenitally athymic) mice C3H/HeN (nu/nu) and in their phenotypically normal littermates (nu/+). The effect of schistosome infection on the presence and maturation of splenic T lymphocytes in C3H/HeN nu/nu and nu/+ mice was examined. BACKGROUND: Treatment of immunocompromised, influenza virus-infected patients with the viral neuraminidase inhibitor oseltamivir often leads to the emergence of drug-resistant variants. Combination therapy with compounds that target different steps in the viral life cycle may improve treatment outcomes and reduce the emergence of drug-resistant variants.
