Disease and Health Inequalities Attributable to Air Pollutant Exposure in Detroit, Michigan.

The environmental burden of disease is the mortality and morbidity attributable to exposures of air pollution and other stressors. The inequality metrics used in cumulative impact and environmental justice studies can be incorporated into environmental burden studies to better understand the health disparities of ambient air pollutant exposures. This study examines the diseases and health disparities attributable to air pollutants for the Detroit urban area. We apportion this burden to various groups of emission sources and pollutants, and show how the burden is distributed among demographic a

Breast cancer among women in Michigan following exposure to brominated flame retardants.

In this updated follow-up, we investigated the breast cancer experience among women in Michigan exposed to brominated flame retardants, some 30 years following exposure. Michigan residents were enrolled in a study cohort after exposure to polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) through the consumption of contaminated food products. PBB concentrations were measured in serum at the time of enrolment. Cancer experience was determined by linkage to the Michigan Cancer Registry. We conducted a nested case-control study that included 51 women diagnosed with breast cancer during 1974-2004 and 202 age-matched

Emergency contraception provision: a survey of Michigan physicians from five medical specialties.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the controversy over expanding delivery options for emergency contraceptive pills (ECP), little is known about physicians' attitudes toward over-the-counter (OTC) provision of ECP, and prior research on physicians' practices often has focused on a single specialty. This study examined the attitudes and practices regarding advance provision and OTC status of ECP among physicians in five medical specialties likely to encounter patients in need of ECP. METHODS: A mail survey of a random sample of 850 Michigan physicians in family/general medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics

The reduction of internal phosphorus loading using alum in Spring Lake, Michigan.

The release of P from lake sediments, which occurs as a part of internal loading, may contribute a significant portion of the total P load to a lake. Phosphorus release rates from sediments in Spring Lake, Michigan, and the degree to which alum reduces P release from these sediments, were investigated during the summer of 2003. Triplicate sediment cores were sampled from four sites in the lake, and exposed to one of four treatments in the laboratory: (i) aerobic water column/alum, (ii) aerobic water column/no alum, (iii) anaerobic water column/alum, or (iv) anaerobic water column/no alum. Optimistic bias and perceptions of bioterrorism in Michigan corporate spokespersons, fall 2001.

The notion that individuals believe that they are more likely than others to experience positive events and avoid negative ones is a well-documented phenomenon in the combined literatures of social psychology and health communication. The current study focuses on Michigan corporate spokespersons' perceptions of their company's risk and potential for optimistic bias. Beginning on September 10, 2001, and continuing through October 2001, telephone surveys were conducted by a professional survey research firm to assess spokespersons' awareness of and preparedness for a bioterrorism attack at their

Uranium in Drinking Water and Bladder Cancer: A Case-control Study in Michigan.

Uranium is naturally occurring in groundwater used for drinking; however, health risks from naturally occurring concentrations are uncertain. Uranium can cause both radiological and chemical toxicity following ingestion. Bladder and kidneys receive a dose when uranium is excreted into the urine. Investigate the association between uranium in drinking water and bladder cancer risk in a case-control study. A population-based bladder cancer case-control study was conducted in 11 counties of southeastern Michigan. A total of 411 cases and 566 controls provided drinking water and toenail samples an
