Heavy metal induced shifts in microbial community composition and interactions with dissolved organic matter in coastal sediments.

Heavy metals can impact the structure and function of coastal sediment. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool plays an important role in determining both the heavy metal toxicity and microbial community composition in coastal sediments. However, how heavy metals affect the interactions between microbial communities and DOM remains unclear. Here, we investigated the influence of heavy metals on the microbial community structure (including bacteria and archaea) and DOM composition in surface sediments of Beibu Gulf, China. Our results revealed firstly that chromium, zinc, cadmium, and lead wer

Mass spectrometry imaging of natural carbonyl products directly from agar-based microbial interactions using 4-APEBA derivatization.

Aliphatic carboxylic acids, aldehydes, and ketones play diverse roles in microbial adaptation to their microenvironment, from excretion as toxins to adaptive metabolites for membrane fluidity. However, the spatial distribution of these molecules throughout biofilms and how microbes in these environments exchange these molecules remain elusive for many of these bioactive species due to inefficient molecular imaging strategies. Herein, we apply on-tissue chemical derivatization (OTCD) using 4-(2-((4-bromophenethyl)dimethylammonio)ethoxy)benzenaminium dibromide (4-APEBA) on a co-culture of a soil

Impact of microbial/plant interactions on the transformation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in rhizosphere of Festuca arundinacea.

The promotion of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation was demonstrated in the rhizosphere of Festuca arundinacea with Pseudomonas fluorescens. P. fluorescens 5RL more significantly interacted with salicylate and dextrose in the agar containing tall fescue than agar without plant roots. Although the presence of tall fescue did not promote catabolic enzyme induction in the absence of salicylate, an increase in dioxygenase activity relative to no plant controls implies that this plant may enhance the degradation of PAHs or facilitate the genotypes that are capable of transforming PAH

Temperature and soil microbial community interact to alter performance across populations of a native plant.

Abiotic and biotic factors interact to shape the expression of traits and fitness. In contemporary environments, species must respond not only to novel climates but also to altered biotic interactions, and these pressures likely differ across the landscape, which affects population persistence and range limits. Here, we tested the interactive effects of soil microbial communities and temperature variation on plant traits and fitness. We predict that plants are locally adapted to their home soil communities and temperatures, and that local soil microbes could mitigate stresses associated with e

Interactive effects of protein and carbohydrates on production of microbial metabolites in the large intestine of growing pigs.

The study aimed at determining the effect of protein type and indigestible carbohydrates on the concentration of microbial metabolites in the large intestine of pigs. The experiment involved 36 pigs (15 kg initial body weight) divided into six groups, fed cereal-based diets with highly digestible casein (CAS) or potato protein concentrate (PPC) of lower ileal digestibility. Each diet was supplemented with cellulose, raw potato starch or pectin. After 2 weeks of feeding, pigs were sacrificed and samples of caecal and ascending, transverse and descending colon digesta were collected for analyses

Microbial succession and interaction in vacuum-packed beef: a longitudinal study of bacterial and fungal dynamics.

The microbial dynamics of vacuum-packed (VP) beef are shaped by interactions between bacterial and fungal communities, influencing spoilage and meat quality during storage. While bacterial succession is well studied, fungal roles remain underexplored. We examined microbial communities in VP beef over 85 days using spike-in, qPCR, 16S/18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, culture-based methods, whole genome sequencing, and co-culture experiments. Initially dominated by Pseudomonas and Brochothrix, the bacterial community shifted toward lactic acid bacteria (LAB) by day 15. Fungal communities remai

EBPR process dynamics under variable conditions: interaction between PAOs and the microbial community.

The performance of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is influenced by various process conditions, such as the type of carbon source, temperature, COD:P ratio or pH-value. The activity of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) and the composition of biocoenosis are strongly influenced by these process conditions. Nevertheless, critical knowledge gaps remain regarding the relevance of microbial diversity and the correlations between PAO/GAO community composition and EBPR process dynamics under different operational conditions. This study demonstrates that Dechloromonas plays a c

Spatial distribution characteristics and interaction effects of DOM and microbial communities in kelp cultivation areas.

The influence of macroalgae cultivation on aquaculture carbon sinks is significant, with microbial carbon (C) pumps contributing to a stable inert dissolved carbon pool in this context. Concurrently, dissolved organic matter (DOM) exchange at the marine sediment-water interface profoundly affects global ecosystem element cycling. However, the interactions between DOM and bacterial communities at the sediment-water interface in kelp cultivation areas, especially regarding microbial function prediction, have not been fully explored. This study analyzed the DOM characteristics, environmental fact

Viruses interact with hosts that span distantly related microbial domains in dense hydrothermal mats.

Many microbes in nature reside in dense, metabolically interdependent communities. We investigated the nature and extent of microbe-virus interactions in relation to microbial density and syntrophy by examining microbe-virus interactions in a biomass dense, deep-sea hydrothermal mat. Using metagenomic sequencing, we find numerous instances where phylogenetically distant (up to domain level) microbes encode CRISPR-based immunity against the same viruses in the mat. Evidence of viral interactions with hosts cross-cutting microbial domains is particularly striking between known syntrophic partner

Real-Time Monitoring of Host-Gut Microbial Interspecies Interaction in Anticancer Drug Metabolism.

Gut microbiome can affect drug metabolism considerably, leading to modified drug response. However, quantitative estimation of host vs. microbial contributions in a living host-gut microbiome system has been challenging. Using the interspecies system of Caenorhabditis elegans and gut bacteria, we developed a real-time approach for monitoring their metabolic interaction in vivo during anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) metabolism. The fluorine NMR-based approach yielded the quantitative contributions to the host 5-FU metabolism made by human gut-microbial species of variable genetic backgrou

Overfishing and nutrient pollution interact with temperature to disrupt coral reefs down to microbial scales.

Losses of corals worldwide emphasize the need to understand what drives reef decline. Stressors such as overfishing and nutrient pollution may reduce resilience of coral reefs by increasing coral-algal competition and reducing coral recruitment, growth and survivorship. Such effects may themselves develop via several mechanisms, including disruption of coral microbiomes. Here we report the results of a 3-year field experiment simulating overfishing and nutrient pollution. These stressors increase turf and macroalgal cover, destabilizing microbiomes, elevating putative pathogen loads, increasin

Unraveling the mechanisms of flavor improvement in salt-reduced dry fermented sausages: Insights from yeast-modulated microbial interactions.

The present study investigated the modulatory effects of Candida zeylanoides AKS6 and Debaryomyces hansenii AKS44 on the quality profile attributes of reduced-NaCl fermented sausages. Results indicated that yeast inoculation decreased pH, moisture content and water activity of reduced-NaCl fermented sausages, establishing a foundation for enhanced microbial safety. Microbiome analysis revealed that the inoculated strains dominated the fungal community, exerting competitive exclusion against endogenous undesirable fungi (e.g., Trichosporon), while synergistically promoting beneficial lactic aci

Iron-mediated modulation of Anammox systems: Mechanistic insights into microbial interactions and process intensification for enhanced nitrogen removal.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has emerged as a key energy-efficient and cost-effective biological nitrogen removal process, yet its full-scale implementation remains hampered by the intrinsic slow growth of anammox bacteria, high environmental sensitivity, and strict nitrite dependence. Increasing evidence identifies iron as a crucial but double-edged modulator of anammox systems, with roles acting across enzymatic, microbial, and engineering scales. The impacts of iron are highly dependent on its speciation, i.e. soluble species act as indispensable enzyme cofactors and electron shut

Enhancement of cadmium uptake in Sedum alfredii through interactions between salicylic acid/jasmonic acid and rhizosphere microbial communities.

The focus on phytoremediation in soil cadmium (Cd) remediation is driven by its cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness. Selecting suitable hyperaccumulators and optimizing their growth conditions are key to enhance the efficiency of heavy metal absorption and accumulation. Our research has concentrated on the role of salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) in facilitating Cd phytoextraction by "Sedum alfredii (S. alfredii)" through improved soil-microbe interactions. Results showed that SA or JA significantly boosted the growth, stress resistance, and Cd extraction efficiency in S. alfredi

Phospholipid-rich krill oil promotes intestinal health by strengthening beneficial gut microbial interactions in an infectious colitis model.

Krill oil (KO) is rich in bioactive ingredients including phospholipids, omega-3 fatty acids, and astaxanthin. While health benefits and roles of KO in modulating lipid metabolism are well documented, its ability to alleviate symptoms related to infectious colitis and modulate gut microbial interactions is still largely unknown. Here we used a multi-omics approach, including transcriptome, microbiome, and metabolome analyses, to understand how KO mediates gut microbial interactions and promotes epithelial healing in an infectious colitis model. KO reversed the infection-induced intestinal hype

Synergistic effects of microplastics and sulfonamide on greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural ditch sediments: Insights into microbial interactions.

Recently, concerns have been raised regarding concurrent pollution by microplastics and antibiotics in agricultural aquatic ecosystems. However, knowledge gaps remain regarding their combined effects on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and bacterial community assembly mechanisms. To address this, a microcosm experiment was performed to investigate the GHG (CH4, CO2, and N2O) emission characteristics and bacterial community assembly mechanisms in agricultural ditch sediments under co-exposure to different microplastics (polythene (PE), polylactic acid (PLA)), and sulfanilamide (SA). Host-Microbiota Interactions in Adolescents with Severe Anorexia Nervosa: Linking Gut Dysbiosis, Intestinal Barrier Function and Microbial Metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is increasingly recognized as a multisystem disorder involving complex host-microbiota interactions, yet prospective pediatric studies with a comprehensive, longitudinal characterization of host-microbiota interactions remain scarce. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study, 26 adolescents with severe AN were evaluated at hospital admission (T0), after one month (T1), and after three months of inpatient nutritional rehabilitation (T2). Gut microbiota composition was assessed by 16S rRNA sequencing and compared with healthy controls (HC) at the baseline

Microbial interactions among Gardnerella, Prevotella and Fannyhessea prior to incident bacterial vaginosis: protocol for a prospective, observational study.

INTRODUCTION: The aetiology of bacterial vaginosis (BV), a biofilm-associated vaginal infection, remains unknown. Epidemiologic data suggest that it is sexually transmitted. BV is characterised by loss of lactic acid-producing lactobacilli and an increase in facultative and strict anaerobic bacteria. Gardnerella spp are present in 95%-100% of cases; Gardnerella vaginalis has been found to be more virulent than other BV-associated bacteria (BVAB) in vitro. However, G. vaginalis is found in women with normal vaginal microbiota and colonisation is not sufficient for BV development. We hypothesise

Interactions between microplastics and organic contaminants: The microbial mechanisms for priming effects of organic compounds on microplastic biodegradation.

The co-presence of plastics and other organic contaminants is pervasive in various ecosystems, particularly in areas with intensive anthropogenic activities. Their interactions inevitably impact the composition and functions of the plastisphere microbiome, which in turn determines the trajectory of these contaminants. Antibiotics are a group of organic contaminants that warrant particular attention due to their wide presence in environments and significant potential to disseminate antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) within the plastisphere. Therefore, this study investigated the impacts of sulf

Microbial Host Interactions and Impaired Wound Healing in Mice and Humans: Defining a Role for BD14 and NOD2.

Chronic wounds cause significant patient morbidity and mortality. A key factor in their etiology is microbial infection, yet skin host-microbiota interactions during wound repair remain poorly understood. Microbiome profiles of noninfected human chronic wounds are associated with subsequent healing outcome. Furthermore, poor clinical healing outcome was associated with increased local expression of the pattern recognition receptor NOD2. To investigate NOD2 function in the context of cutaneous healing, we treated mice with the NOD2 ligand muramyl dipeptide and analyzed wound repair parameters a
