As a significant pathway for microplastics (MPs) contamination in aquatic environments, atmospheric deposition plays a critical role in the global MPs cycle. This study investigates atmospheric MPs pollution across urban, suburban, and exurban areas of Chengdu, China. The abundances decreasing from urban (246 n/(m²·day)) to suburban (192 n/(m²·day)) and exurban (177 n/(m²·day)) regions ("n" denotes the number of microplastic), dominated primarily by fibers and fragments. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for MPs source appraisal identified three major underlying patterns, collectively explain

Understanding the environmental fate and behaviour of microplastics across space and time is challenging, especially in remote locations such as the Galápagos Islands. Citizen science can support plastic monitoring by extending geographic and temporal coverage, though concerns persist around data validation. This study evaluated a simple citizen science methodology, aided by a near-infrared portable spectrometer (PlasTell), for the rapid monitoring of beach microplastics (>1 mm) to investigate spatiotemporal accumulation patterns on Tortuga Bay, Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos. Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous contaminants in dietary sources, including seafood, table salt, infant formula, and drinking water. Recent stimulated Raman scattering microscopy has reported approximately 2.4 × 105 MPs and NPs per liter in selected bottled-water samples. While these estimates remain contested and should not be generalized across products, they highlight the extent to which conventional analytical methods may underestimate nanoscale exposure. Current risk frameworks remain anchored to particle-count and mass-based metrics that do not capture reactive s

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging as a novel pollutant, raising significant concerns regarding their adverse effects on human health. Furthermore, MPs are susceptible to light-induced aging in the environment, which alters their physical characteristics and potentially alters their toxic effects. While previous studies have documented the retention of MPs in the placenta, the specific impacts of MPs, particularly aged MPs, on placental function remain poorly understood. In the current study, we utilized 1 µm polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs), a widely used model for MPs, to evaluate the effect

The invention of Bakelite in 1907 marked the dawn of the synthetic polymer era, leading to exponential plastic production and widespread microplastic (MP) pollution. MPs (<5 mm) now permeate ecosystems and human tissues, and emerging evidence suggests that they may pose health risks ranging from reproductive to cardiovascular effects. This narrative review aims to connect the historical growth of plastic production, the environmental spread of micro- and nanoplastics, evidence on human health effects, the development of candidate safer polymers, and the main policy responses. The specific obje

Microplastics and nanoplastics (<5 mm and <1 μm, respectively) are emerging contaminants now ubiquitous across environmental matrices and increasingly recognized for their impacts on human health. These particles commonly adsorb or contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals-such as bisphenol-A and phthalate additives-that together trigger complex biological responses. This review examines the central role of oxidative stress in mediating the toxicity of microplastics and associated endocrine disruptors across multiple organ systems. We discuss mechanisms including cellular uptake, reactive oxygen

Soil ecosystems are considered important sinks for microplastics (MPs). However, the effects of environmentally relevant mixtures of MPs on soil organisms have rarely been assessed. This study aimed to evaluate the chronic effects of a mixture of MPs on two model soil organisms, the earthworm Eisenia andrei and the springtail Folsomia candida. The MP mixture was composed of polymers and shapes frequently found in agricultural soils amended with sewage sludge, including high-density polyethylene and polypropylene fragments, and polyester fibers. The organisms were exposed in LUFA 2.2 soil to MP

Microplastics (MPs) are problematic pollutants in various environmental contexts. Dust storms, blowing dusts, and dust devils can detach significant amounts of surface MPs into the atmosphere and migrate them far from their original sources via atmospheric transport. Studies have shown that strong electrostatic fields that exceed 150 kV/m can be observed during dust storm events. In this study, we perform theoretical calculations and laboratory experiments that demonstrate that MPs can be directly lifted under a strong electric field, and the threshold electric field (Ee) required for the lift

The pervasive presence of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in the environment has raised growing concerns regarding their potential health impacts. While research has progressively revealed the toxicological effects of MNPs, limited attention has been given to their specific influence on the cardiovascular system, particularly in human models. This systematic review synthesizes current evidence on MNP-induced cardiotoxicity, highlighting both physiological outcomes and underlying mechanisms.A total of 72 studies-including in vivo experiments on aquatic species and rodents, and in vitro as

BACKGROUND: Widespread pollution from microplastics (MPs) has been identified as a significant contributor to adverse health effects in humans. This research aimed to investigate the presence of MPs in human penile cancer.
METHODS: The Laser Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (LDIR) was employed to detect and analyze MPs in the cancerous tissue (CT) and adjacent normal tissue (ANT) of 17 patients diagnosed with penile cancer. Subsequently, the abundance, sizes and types of MPs in CT were compared to those in the corresponding ANT.
RESULTS: Nine types of MPs were identified in 85.3 % of the sample

The increasing use of antidepressants, especially fluoxetine (FLX), has resulted in their presence in aquatic environments due to wastewater discharges from municipal, industrial, and hospital sources. Simultaneously, microplastics (MPs) have been extensively studied in short-term (acute) exposures, showing adverse effects such as oxidative stress, behavioral alterations and neurotoxicity. However, the embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of these compounds, as well as their impacts on the survival, development, morphology, behavior, and reproduction of fish embryos in aquatic ecosystems, remai

The widespread environmental pollution of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) has become a major public health issue, with increasing evidence associating their bioaccumulation with cancer onset. This review offers a thorough examination of the etiological contributions of MPs/NPs in carcinogenesis, clarifying their mechanistic roles in in vitro, in vivo, and patient-derived evidences. Relevant studies were systematically identified and screened following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines to ensure methodological transparency and quality. We highlighted recent discoveries that emphasize the va

Plastics found in our everyday environment are becoming an increasing concern for individual and population-level health, and the extent of exposure and potential toxic effects of these contaminants on numerous human organ systems are becoming clear. Microplastics (MPs), tiny plastic particles, appear to have many of the same biological effects as their plastic precursors and have the compounded effect of potential accumulation in different organs. Recently, microplastic accumulation was observed in the human placenta, raising important questions related to the biological effects of these cont

Recent scientific studies have raised concerns about the presence and potential impacts of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in tea-based drinks. This review critically examines publications relating to MNPs in tea, with focus on the type of sample involved, methods and techniques employed to isolate and identify MNPs, and the main qualitative and quantitative findings. Sources of MNPs in tea include production water, plastic packaging and contaminated tea leaves but the most important source is teabags when steeped in boiling water. Here, more than 109 MNPs have been reported to be releas

Mountain salts produced from the highland region in NE Sarawak have a market value and also provide basic income to the communities. During the salt-making process, microplastics (MPs) may enter into commercial table salts from various sources, which has not been explored yet. Hence, the current research investigates the presence of MPs in the rock salts produced from the highland saline water in two different locations (L1 and L2) in NE Sarawak. Among the brine water and rock salt samples analysed, the highest concentrations of MPs were detected from the salt samples. It has been revealed tha

Introduction: The incidence of colorectal cancer in those under 50 years of age (early onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC)) is increasing throughout the world. This has predominantly been an increase in distal colonic and rectal cancers, which are biologically similar to late onset colorectal cancer (LOCRC) but with higher rates of mucinous or signet ring histology, or poorly differentiated cancers. The epidemiology of this change suggests that it is a cohort effect since 1960, and is most likely driven by an environmental cause. We explore the possible role of microplastics as a driver for this c

Scientific research on the impact of microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial systems is still emerging, but it has confirmed adverse health effects in organisms exposed to plastics. Although recent studies have shown the toxicological effects of individual MPs polymers on honey bees, the effects of different polymer combinations on cognitive and behavioural performance remain unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated the effects of oral exposure to spherical MPs on cognitive performance and brain accumulation in the honey bee Apis mellifera. We evaluated the acute toxicity, after a two-d

Microplastics (MPs) are substances that pose a risk to both human life and the environment. Their types and production are increasing year on year, and their potential to cause environmental pollution is a worldwide concern. Conventional water treatment processes, particularly coagulation and sedimentation, are not effective at removing all MPs. It is therefore important to assess the morphological changes in the MPs, i.e., the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polyethylene (PE), during ozonation and the dissolved organic carbon leaching as well as chloroform formation in the subsequent chl
