Could ultrasound midwifery training increase antenatal detection of congenital anomalies in Ghana?

BACKGROUND: As part of World Health Organization (WHO) 2016 updated antenatal care (ANC) guidelines routine ultrasonography is recommended, including to detect congenital anomalies. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) developed an in-service midwifery ultrasound training course in 2017, which includes fetal anomaly detection. Training rollout has been very limited. We sought to determine proportions of anomalies among neonates presenting to Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) that should be prenatally detectable by course-trained midwives in order to determine training program potential utility. Importance of the Early Recognition of Neonatal Seizure Within Midwifery-Led Birthing Units.

Perinatal strokes are strokes occurring from 20 weeks of gestation until 28 days of life. Neonatal strokes are part of this spectrum, with the occurrence of stroke from birth up until 28 days of life. Strokes in neonates can lead to future impairments, for example, motor delay, cognitive or speech issues and epilepsy. We report a case of neonatal stroke leading to prolonged seizure activity. We aim to review the importance of early clinical recognition in identifying neonatal strokes in the hope of improving outcomes. We report the case of a baby girl, born at a gestation of 40+6 weeks. The pa

Reflecting on the evidence-practice gap - a participatory approach in use of CTG in midwifery practice.

INTRODUCTION: Midwives and obstetricians often overuse Cardiotocography (CTG) when monitoring low-risk births, despite evidence and guidelines recommending intermittent auscultation (IA). This study aims to examine whether and how a participatory intervention can provide initiatives that enhance midwives' use of evidence-based CTG monitoring in low-risk births. METHODS: Midwives and obstetricians from Viborg Regional Hospital participated in workshops at the hospital. Participatory design was applied using the "User Innovation Management" framework to guide two workshops with midwives and obs

Virtual reality in midwifery education: A mixed methods study to assess learning and understanding.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality learning environments (VRLEs) are a potentially valuable learning tool that have recently increased in popularity due to widespread availability and decreased cost. VRLEs can provide an immersive learning environment that increases the understanding of three-dimensional relationships between anatomical structures. However, there is a paucity of evidence in the literature supporting its use within Midwifery education. OBJECTIVES: To explore the effectiveness of a VRLE as an educational tool in midwifery education. SETTING: A large University in Ireland, with instit

Learning through authentic assessment: an evaluation of a new development in the undergraduate midwifery curriculum.

Assessment is a powerful influence on learning, and can form an important strategy amongst a variety of teaching and learning approaches. Authentic assessment activities are designed to mimic the complexity of 'real world' situations that students may encounter in professional life, and require the application of a combination of skills related to knowledge, skills and attitude. We undertook a small-scale evaluation using a qualitative descriptive design to explore the feasibility and usefulness of an authentic assessment item that focused on a common clinical scenario in midwifery practice, f

Expanding the practice placement capacity in pre-registration midwifery education: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Practice placements are an essential component of midwifery education, enabling students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real-world midwifery setting. Exposure and immersion to practice is a core focus of midwifery education internationally. These placements are crucial for students to develop the skills and expertise needed to become safe, competent, and compassionate midwife practitioners. However, access to appropriate placements has become a significant challenge, compounded by increasing student numbers. This review aims to synthesise knowledge on practice placements

Benefits of caseload midwifery to prevent fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: A discussion paper.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to alcohol prenatally can result in a child being diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Affected infants experience lifelong impairments that can involve, physical, cognitive, behavioural and emotional difficulties that impact on their functional capacity. Effective prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is critically needed in Australia. Reduction in the prevalence of this disorder will only be possible if we prevent alcohol consumption during pregnancy. AIM: This paper provides an overview of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and discusses the role of cas
