Insomnia is a common and impairing consequence of military deployment, but little is known about pre-deployment risk factors for post-deployment insomnia. Abnormal threat learning tendencies are commonly observed in individuals with insomnia and maladaptive responses to stress have been implicated in the development of insomnia, suggesting that threat learning could be an important risk factor for post-deployment insomnia. Here, we examined pre-deployment threat learning as a predictor of post-deployment insomnia and the potential mechanisms underlying this effect. Male servicemembers (N = 814

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), or concussion, is prevalent in the military. The course of recovery can be highly variable. This study investigates whether deployment-acquired mTBI is associated with subsequent presence and severity of post-concussive symptoms (PCS) and identifies predictors of persistent PCS among US Army personnel who sustained mTBI while deployed to Afghanistan. We used data from a prospective longitudinal survey of soldiers assessed 1-2 months before a 10-month deployment to Afghanistan (T0), on redeployment to the United States (T1), approximately 3 months later (T2),

BACKGROUND: The perceived effects of a military career on service personnel's children have been largely overlooked.
AIMS: To examine the views of military personnel about the impact their career has on their children in relation to socio-demographic variables, military characteristics and mental health symptoms.
METHODS: Service personnel (regular and reserve) with one or more children (<18 years) were included. Data were taken from a large UK military cohort study completed between 2007 and 2009. Participants were asked to report whether they viewed their military career as having a positi

BACKGROUND: Most previous attempts to determine the psychological cost of military deployment have been limited by reliance on convenience samples, lack of pre-deployment data or confidentiality and cross-sectional designs.
AIMS: This study addressed these limitations using a population-based, prospective cohort of U.S. military personnel deployed in support of the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
METHOD: The sample consisted of U.S. military service members in all branches including active duty, reserve and national guard who deployed once (n = 3393) or multiple times (n = 4394). Self-re

INTRODUCTION: Active-duty servicewomen and veterans make up nearly 20% of the United States military and may experience trauma specific to military service. Military-specific trauma includes combat deployment and military sexual trauma, exposure to which may result in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the extent to which military trauma exposures impact the pregnancy outcomes of active-duty servicewomen and women veterans.
METHODS: A systematic search of OVID MEDLINE, OVID Embase, and OVID PsycINFO from inception to September 25, 2023, iden

Four active duty military personnel and two retired soldiers/military contractors were treated with spinal or peripheral nerve stimulators. All six personnel were able to deploy after the stimulators were placed. Five patients had no incidents during their deployments. One patient completed four deployments but had mechanical complications that necessitated eventual revisions. Considering the risks and limitations of reoperation, nerve blocks, and pharmacotherapy in a forward-deployed area, spinal cord stimulation provides an appealing alternative in soldiers who desire to remain deployable on

INTRODUCTION: Combat exposure has been associated with the emergence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in military personnel; however, not all veterans are negatively impacted by their operational experience. In many instances, the absence of symptoms following operational service is attributed to resilience. This study explored the construct of resilience by examining the relationship between levels of deployment-related exposures and psychological symptoms, as well as identifying factors that may contribute to resilience and emerging risk.
METHOD: Participants were special f

The link between military deployment to Southwest Asia and Afghanistan, and the risk for lung disease, including bronchiolitis, is increasingly well-recognized. However, histopathologic features that distinguish deployment-related lung diseases from other diseases affecting the small airways and airspaces are uncertain. A computer-based scoring system was developed to characterize surgical lung biopsy findings in 65 soldiers with persistent respiratory symptoms following military deployment ("deployers"). Deployer lung biopsies were compared to those from 8 patients with chronic hypersensitivi

Medical claims were analyzed from 2810 military children who visited a civilian emergency department (ED) or hospital from 2000 to 2014 with behavioral health as the primary diagnosis and TRICARE as the primary/secondary payer. Visit prevalence was estimated annually and categorized: 2000-2002 (pre-deployment), 2003-2008 (first post-deployment), 2009-2014 (second post-deployment). Age was categorized: preschoolers (0-4 years), school-aged (5-11 years), adolescents (12-17 years). During Afghanistan and Iraq wars, 2562 military children received 4607 behavioral health visits. Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is a poorly understood vestibular disorder that frequently affects military personnel exposed to motion during transportation and deployment. It is characterized by a persistent sensation of motion often experienced after disembarking from a ship or other mode of transportation. It can significantly affect a service member's balance, coordination, attention, and focus, which can then substantially impact their quality of life, ability to perform their military duties, and overall mission readiness. Despite its potential impact, comprehensive studies on MdDS

Increases in combat deployments have been associated with rises in rates of child neglect in U.S. military families. Although various types of child neglect have been described in military families, it is unknown whether deployment status is associated with specific types of child neglect and whether other factors, such as substance misuse, play a role. To determine the contribution of service member deployment status to the risk of specific child neglect types, data were collected from 390 substantiated U.S. Army child neglect case files. The contributions of deployment status at the time of

The objective of this study was to better understand the post-deployment behavior health symptoms and readjustment/reintegration experienced by military nurses who provided en route care while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom. Employing an exploratory, concurrent, mixed-methods design with an electronic survey consisting of several valid instruments and single, face-to-face interviews; data were gathered from 119 surveys and 22 interviews. Four qualitative themes aligned with the Post-Deployment Readjustment Inventory items. Findings from interviews support and ill

Negative mental health outcomes are prevalent among veterans exposed to military-related stressors and are associated with social isolation. Limited research exists on resilience following military separation and its impact on social isolation in veterans. We examined resilience against military-related stressors and 2-year longitudinal associations with social isolation indicators; gender differences were also explored. U.S. military veterans (N = 351, 70.4% men) who deployed to the wars in and around Iraq and Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks (9/11) were recruit

Plasmodium falciparum infection threatens military populations deployed to highly malaria-endemic regions, such as Peruvian Army peacekeepers deployed to Central African Republic. During deployment, malaria cases were identified by microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests. After deployment, we performed malaria diagnosis by malachite green loop-mediated isothermal amplification and photo-induced electron transfer PCR assays. We used ELISA to test for P. falciparum C-terminal 19-kDa region merozoite surface protein 1-specific IgG from 97 peacekeepers. Malaria prevalence during deployment was 33.33

The wars in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom, OIF) and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom, OEF) have engendered a growing population of US female veterans, with women now comprising 15% of active US duty military personnel. Women serving in the military come under direct fire and experience combat-related injuries and trauma, and are also often subject to in-service sexual assaults and sexual harassment. However, little is known regarding how women veterans cope with these combat and military sexual trauma experiences once they return from deployment. To better understand their experiences,

How are children's lives altered when a parent goes off to war? What aspects of combat deployment are most likely to put children at risk for psychological and other problems, and what resources for resilience can they tap to overcome such hardships and thrive? To answer these questions, Patricia Lester and Lieutenant Colonel Eric Flake first examine the deployment cycle, a multistage process that begins with a period of anxious preparation after a family receives notice that a parent will be sent into combat. Perhaps surprisingly, for many families, they write, the most stressful part of the

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a major concern among active-duty military personnel. Aggression represents a salient risk factor for suicide among civilians, yet is relatively understudied among military populations. Although several theories posit a relation between aggression and suicide with putative underlying mechanisms of social isolation, access to firearms, and alcohol use, researchers have yet to test these potential mediators. This study uses rich, longitudinal data from the Army Study to Assess Risk and Resilience (STARRS) Pre/Post Deployment Study (PPDS) to examine whether aggression longi

Sleep deprivation and sleep disturbance are pervasive among military personnel during and after combat deployment. However, occupational and other constraints often influence military workers to decline behavioral health services and prescription pharmaceutical sleep aids. This article, drawing on ethnographic interviews with National Guard veterans of combat deployment, demonstrates that soldiers with sleep disturbance frequently manage symptoms without medical supervision and by using ad hoc methods including alcohol use. Findings suggest the potential significance of further research into t

INTRODUCTION: Military personnel is often deployed in environmentally distinct areas across the globe and thereby exposed to a multitude of new plants, weeds or trees. Sensitisation to inhalant allergens occurs upon exposure in predisposed individuals. This causes frequent problems that may affect the readiness of the personnel.
METHODS: Study participants were recruited among the military personnel of the Belgian Army and invited to receive an allergy test by the skin prick automated test (SPAT) device for a panel of 22 inhalant allergens. A questionnaire was completed to retrieve informatio

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the unique and combined associations of various military stress exposures with positive and negative mental health symptoms in active duty service members.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated 87 male U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians (age M ± SE, range 33.7 ± 0.6, 22-47 years). Those who endorsed a positive traumatic brain injury diagnosis were excluded to eliminate the confounding effects on mental health symptoms. Using a survey platform on a computer tablet, EOD technicians self-reported combat exposure, deployment
