LioNeo project: a randomised double-blind clinical trial for nutrition of very-low-birth-weight infants.

We assessed the effectiveness of lyophilised banked human milk (HM) as a fortifier to feed very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWI). This study aimed to evaluate the safety and tolerability of HM with HM lyophilisate as an additive compared with the standard additive (cows' milk protein). In this phase I double-blind randomised controlled clinical trial, set in the intensive and intermediate care units of a tertiary hospital, forty VLBWI were enrolled and allocated into two groups: HM plus HM lyophilisate (LioNeo) or HM plus commercial additive (HMCA). The inclusion criteria were preterm infants,

Heterogeneity of Multimedia Exposures to Neurotoxic Elements (Al, As, Cd, Pb, Mn, and Hg) in Breastfed Infants from Porto Velho, Brazil.

Infant exposure to neurotoxic elements is a public health issue that needs monitoring with regard to breast milk composition. We studied six neurotoxic elements in breast milk samples at different stages of lactation in mothers from Porto Velho, Brazil. We used a flow-injection mercury system (FIMS) to determine total Hg concentrations and an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) to determine the concentrations of Al, As, Cd, Pb, and Mn in 106 donors of a human milk bank. Association rules analyses were applied to determine the pattern of binary and ternary mixture

Long-term impact of neonatal breast-feeding on body weight and glucose tolerance in children of diabetic mothers.

OBJECTIVE: Offspring born to women with pregnancies complicated by diabetes are at increased childhood risk of developing obesity and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). In population-based studies, breast-feeding has been shown to be protective against obesity and diabetes later in life. To date, the role of breast-feeding on offspring of diabetic mothers (ODM) has not been investigated in this context. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 112 ODM (type 1 diabetes, n = 83; gestational diabetes, n = 29) were evaluated prospectively for impact of ingestion of either diabetic breast milk (DBM)

The status of pathogen-reduced plasma.

Efforts to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted infectious diseases began more than 4 decades ago with testing donated blood for syphilis. During the subsequent 4 decades, the number of recognized blood-borne transmissible agents and new laboratory tests has proliferated to a logistical breaking point. Further, the number of "emerging agents" which might enter the donor population is increasing continuously. In the search for an alternative to the laboratory testing strategy, pathogen-reduction technologies have emerged as the most promising. The model for this paradigm is pasteurization

Randomized trial of donor human milk versus preterm formula as substitutes for mothers' own milk in the feeding of extremely premature infants.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with preterm formula (PF), mother's milk (MM) is associated with lower rates of late-onset sepsis (LOS) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) among premature infants. Because not all mothers of premature infants produce sufficient milk to supply their infants throughout hospitalization, we reasoned that pasteurized donor human milk (DM) would be a suitable alternative. METHODS: Extremely premature infants (<30 weeks of gestation) whose mothers intended to breastfeed were assigned randomly to receive either pasteurized DM or PF if the supply of their own MM became insufficien

Eliminating Disparities and Optimizing Equity in Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

Necrotizing enterocolitis is a devastating complication of prematurity with high mortality and lifelong morbidities. The burden of disease is inequitably distributed, with higher incidence and mortality in racialized, socioeconomically disadvantaged, and geographically marginalized populations. These disparities reflect structural inequities in maternal health, preterm birth risk, quality of care, and access to protective interventions such as mother's own milk and donor human milk. Reducing necrotizing enterocolitis disparities requires multilevel solutions spanning health policy, equitable p

Exploring the Experience of Human Milk Use in Nigeria Neonatal Intensive Care Units: A Scoping Review.

Human milk is the recommended feeding standard for preterm and low-birth-weight infants. The 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) guidance prioritizes mother's milk, donor human milk (DHM) when mother's milk is insufficient, early feeding initiation, and potential fortification for the smallest infants. However, evidence on current practices and alignment with these recommendations in Nigeria is limited. This scoping review examined human milk utilization practices, perceptions, and experiences in Nigerian neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) populations. A systematic search was conducted in

Donor human milk largely replaces formula-feeding of preterm infants in two urban hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: To determine acceptance of donor human milk (DM) for feeding preterm infants and whether offering DM, alters mothers' milk (MM) feeding. STUDY DESIGN: Infant feeding data were collected from medical records of 650 very preterm infants enrolled between 2006-2011 in two hospital level III neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The study was conducted during the implementation of a program offering 14 days of DM. RESULT: From 2006-2011, any DM use increased from 8 to 77% of infants, largely replacing formula for the first 2 weeks of life; provision of MM did not c

First record of Haematopinus tuberculatus (Burmeister, 1839) (Psocodea: Anoplura: Haematopinidae) parasitizing buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in the state of Amazonas, Brazil.

Lice are obligate ectoparasites of birds and mammals with specialized mouthparts adapted to feed on the blood or other body tissues of their respective hosts. The registry of parasites that can cause economic and health impacts on the buffalo herd of the country is of utmost importance. In the present study, we report the first record of Haematopinus tuberculatus parasitizing buffalo in the municipality of Autazes, Amazonas, Brazil. The study was conducted in a rural private area located on the banks of the Paraná Madeirinha River. Twelve specimens were collected and identified as H. tubercula

Coverage and utilization of Nikshay Poshan Yojana among patients with tuberculosis: Exploring patterns and influencing factors.

BACKGROUND: India bears a burden of tuberculosis (TB) and undernutrition, both of which are interconnected, as undernutrition increases the susceptibility and affects the outcome of TB infection. To address this, government of India introduced Nikshay Poshan Yojana in 2018 to provide nutritional support to patients with TB. However, the end-usage and barriers of the monetary benefit under this scheme have not been extensively studied. OBJECTIVE: To address these gaps, our study aimed to estimate Nikshay Poshan Yojana coverage among patients with tuberculosis in the Ballabgarh tuberculosis uni
