Clinical and whole exome sequencing findings in children from Yunnan Yi minority ethnic group with retinitis pigmentosa: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of rare hereditary retinal dystrophy diseases that lead to difficulty seeing at night, progressive loss of peripheral field vision (tunnel vision), and eventual loss of central vision. However, a genetic cause cannot be determined in approximately 60% of cases. CASE PRESENTATION: Two non-consanguineous Yi minority ethnic group families who have a 6.4-year-old boy and a 0.5-year-old boy, respectively, were recruited for genetic diagnosis. Here, we used whole-exome sequencing to detect mutations in the genes of the probands of the retinitis pigmentosa

A Pilot Cognitive Behavior Therapy Group Intervention to Address Coping with Discrimination Among HIV-Positive Latino Immigrant Sexual Minority Men.

Discrimination is thought to be a key driver of health disparities that affect people with multiple intersecting devalued identities, such as HIV-positive Latino sexual minority men (SMM). Ineffective coping with the stress of discrimination (e.g., rumination, substance use) may lead to worse long-term mental and physical health. Within the context of a community partnership, we developed a nine-session, community-based, cognitive behavior therapy group intervention to address coping with discrimination among HIV-positive Latino immigrant SMM. In Study 1, we assessed anticipated intervention a

Intermediate Outcomes of a Randomized Controlled Trial of an Online Group Program to Prevent Dating Violence and Alcohol Use Among Sexual and Gender Minority Teens.

LGBTQ+ teens are more likely than their heterosexual and cisgender peers to experience teen dating violence (TDV) and engage in substance use. Despite these increased risks, there is a dearth of prevention programming tailored for LGBTQ+ teens. The current study evaluated intermediate outcomes from a pilot randomized controlled trial of an affirming 9-session online group dating violence and alcohol use prevention program for LGBTQ+ teens, the Promoting Resilient Youth with Strong Hearts and Minds (PRYSHM) program. A total of 304 LGBTQ+ teens (ages 15-18) were randomized to complete PRYSHM (n

Anemia in an ethnic minority group in lower northern Thailand: A community-based study investigating the prevalence in relation to inherited hemoglobin disorders and iron deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a globally well-known major public health problem. In Southeast Asia where there is ethnic diversity, both iron deficiency (ID) and inherited hemoglobin disorders (IHDs) are prevalent and are considered to be the major factors contributing to anemia. However, little is known about the anemia burden among the ethnic minorities. In this study, we determine the burden of anemia, in relation to ID and IHDs, among the Karen ethnic minorities living in the rural area of lower northern Thailand. METHODS: A cross-sectional community-based study was conducted at Ban Rai district,

Phenotyping of minor blood groups (C, c, E, e, and Mia) using a paper-based device and image-based high-throughput detection.

Testing ABO and D (Rh) are priorities before blood transfusion, and the minor blood group antigen should be matched to reduce alloimmunization. In a recent study, a paper-based device (PAD) was developed for C, E, c, e, Mia phenotyping, combined with image-based high-throughput detection. A total of 148 ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) blood samples were used to evaluate and create an optimal criterion using OpenCV for high-throughput interpretation. Results revealed that anti-C, -c, -E, -e, and -Mia were successful for blood group phenotyping with area under the receiver operating cha

Clinical value of minor responses after 4 doses of rituximab in Waldenström macroglobulinaemia: a follow-up of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group E3A98 trial.

Waldenström macroglobulinaemia is a low-grade, lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma that is responsive to rituximab. We report the role of a minor response in predicting overall outcomes. We extended follow-up of a previously described cohort (n = 69) treated with 4 weekly doses of rituximab and observed durable responses (median time to progression, 30 months; 5-year survival rate, 66%). Patients achieving a minor response [25-50% immunoglobulin M (IgM) reduction] appeared to do as well as those achieving an objective response (>50% IgM reduction), which suggests that more aggressive or intensive thera

Segregation analysis of Alzheimer pedigrees: rare Mendelian dominant mutation(s) explain a minority of early-onset cases. French Alzheimer Collaborative Group.

Segregation analysis of Alzheimer disease (AD) in 92 families ascertained through early-onset ( < or = age 60 years) AD (EOAD) probands has been carried out, allowing for a mixture in AD inheritance among probands. The goal was to quantify the proportion of probands that could be explained by autosomal inheritance of a rare disease allele "a" at a Mendelian dominant gene (MDG). Our data provide strong evidence for a mixture of two distributions; AD transmission is fully explained by MDG inheritance in < 20% of probands. Male and female age-of-onset distributions are significantly different for

Hypodensity of the cerebral white matter in patients with transient ischemic attack or minor stroke: influence on the rate of subsequent stroke. Dutch TIA Trial Study Group.

In a prospective study of 3,017 patients with transient ischemic attack or minor ischemic stroke from the Dutch Transient Ischemic Attack Trial, the presence or absence of diffuse hypodensity of the white matter on a baseline computed tomography (CT) scan of the brain was related to the occurrence of subsequent stroke. On entry, 337 patients were judged to have diffuse hypodensity of the white matter on CT; they were older (71.4 +/- 7.4 years versus 64.4 +/- 9.9 years), more often had hypertension (50% versus 41%), and more often had lacunar infarcts on CT scan (40% versus 26%) than did patien

Effect of an antimicrobial stewardship program in the prevention of antibiotic misuse in patients with spinal cord injury undergoing minor urologic procedures: a single-group, quasi-experiment study.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) are an internationally recognized strategy for reducing antimicrobial resistance while maintaining patient safety. ASP activities include the restriction of broad-spectrum antibiotics, the establishment of hospital guidelines based on antibiograms, and the promotion of appropriate antibiotic use. This study aimed to determine whether the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship practices improved the effects of a peri-procedure antibiotic prophylaxis prescribed by urologists for patients with spinal cord injury/disease (SCI/D) undergoing

A cross-sectional pilot study to estimate the frequency of minor blood group alleles and phenotypes in RhD-negative North Indian blood donors by DNA microarray analysis.

INTRODUCTION: There are scarce data on Indian blood donors with respect to blood group phenotypes using molecular diagnostic modalities. Hence, we planned to estimate frequencies of blood group alleles/phenotypes using DNA microarray analysis in the north Indian RhD-negative blood donor population. With this initial pilot study, we plan to expand it to our entire donor population. METHODOLOGY: The cross-sectional prospective study was conducted on 50 Indian blood donors (O RhD negative), to study the blood group genotype frequency. Genotyping for the most relevant red blood cell antigens (Rh,

Perceived risks and amelioration of harm in research using mobile technology to support antiretroviral therapy adherence in the context of methamphetamine use: a focus group study among minorities living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use poses a barrier to antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. Black and Hispanic men who have sex with men living with HIV (PLWH) shoulder much of the health burden resulting from the methamphetamine and HIV syndemic. Smartphones are nearly ubiquitous in the USA and may be promising vehicles for delivering interventions for ART adherence and drug use cessation. However, the acceptability of using applications to collect sensitive information and deliver feedback in this population has not been adequately explored. OBJECTIVE: This study examined minority PLWH's app

A Comprehensive Study via Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance of a Variety of Omega-3 Lipid-Rich Supplements Available in the Spanish Market: Acyl Group Profile, Minor Components, and Oxidative Status.

Dietary supplements are a means of increasing the consumption of beneficial ω-3 lipids. Their composition in acyl groups, the structures supporting them, and their minor component profile can influence their oxidative stability and even their health effects. However, information about all these features is not always provided to consumers. The purpose of this study was to characterise via Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) a variety of ω-3 lipid-rich supplements available in the Spanish market, addressing the previously mentioned aspects, together with their oxidative status. Despite n

Impact of a nurse-directed, coordinated school health program to enhance physical activity behaviors and reduce body mass index among minority children: a parallel-group, randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Underserved children, particularly girls and those in urban communities, do not meet the recommended physical activity guidelines (>60min of daily physical activity), and this behavior can lead to obesity. The school years are known to be a critical period in the life course for shaping attitudes and behaviors. Children look to schools for much of their access to physical activity. Thus, through the provision of appropriate physical activity programs, schools have the power to influence apt physical activity choices, especially for underserved children where disparities in obesity-

Low-grade follicular lymphoma with t(14;18) presents a homogeneous disease entity otherwise the rest comprises minor groups of heterogeneous disease entities with Bcl2 amplification, Bcl6 translocation or other gene aberrances.

Follicular lymphomas (FL) are morphologically classified into grades 1, 2, 3a and 3b by the World Health Organization. Bcl2, Bcl6 and CD10 are phenotypic markers of FL while the Bcl2 t(14;18) and Bcl6 t(3q27) gene translocations are common genetic changes. However, to date, there has been no integrated analysis based on phenotype, grade and genotype from large numbers of FL cases. We graded 261 cases of FL and determined their phenotypes and gene alterations. According to the antigen markers and gene alterations of 147 cases, we classified FL into typical and the others types. The typical grou

Effect of combined consumption of Lactobacillus brevis KB290 and β-carotene on minor diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome-like symptoms in healthy subjects: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial.

People with non-pathological diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D)-like symptoms are present at a significant level even in healthy populations, but established prophylaxis is lacking. Previously, we have found that co-administration of Lactobacillus brevis KB290 (KB290) and β-carotene (βC) attenuated murine colitis (potential cause of IBS-D-like symptoms) significantly. Here, we investigated the effect of KB290 and βC on minor IBS-D-like symptoms in healthy volunteers. After a 4-week run-in period, subjects received a KB290 + βC or placebo capsule for 12 weeks, followed by a

Differential Associations of Depressive Symptomology to HIV Care Engagement Among Young Black Sexual Minority Men with HIV (YBSMM+) in the US South: A Multi-Group Analysis of Mood, Intimate Partner Violence, and Alcohol Use.

Young Black Sexual Minority Men with HIV (YBSMM+) in the US South encounter multiple socio-structural challenges that contribute to disproportionately poor HIV-related outcomes across the care continuum. Depression, anxiety, intimate partner violence (IPV), and alcohol use are prominent factors that negatively impact engagement with HIV care. Syndemic theory posits that these multiple factors interact synergistically to promote poor outcomes; however, depression itself is highly heterogeneous in presentation, which may pose issues when examining associations to HIV care engagement.
