A statistical shape model of the human sternum including cortical bone thickness.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding population-level variation in bone size and shape is important for general biomechanics, clinical assessments, and for developing heterogeneous human body models used in safety restraint design. Thoracic injuries are common in severe motor vehicle crashes, and although rib fractures are frequently studied, sternal fractures also occur in these scenarios. This study aimed to investigate how demographic factors-sex, age, stature, and BMI-relate to variations in sternal size, shape, and cortical thickness, all important factors for fracture tolerance. METHODS: Compute

Statistical modeling and analysis of cell counts from multiplexed imaging data.

The rapid development of multiplexed imaging technologies has enabled the spatial cartography of various healthy and tumor tissues. However, adequate statistical models are still lacking to compare tissue compositions across sample groups. Here, we developed two statistical models that accurately describe the distributions of cell counts in an imaging mass cytometry dataset comprising tissues from a lymph node, COVID-19-affected lung samples, and Hashimoto disease. The parameters of these distributions are directly linked to the field of view size and to cellular properties, including density

Prediction of success of slings in female stress incontinence, statistical and AI modeling.

Studies on predicting the outcome of sling surgery are limited. Most depend on analysis of multiple confounding factors using regression models. However, their prediction results are limited. In this study, we tested a statistical regression model and an AI model for the prediction of the outcome of mid-urethral sling. Data were collected from 151 patients who underwent MUS surgery in our center from 2002 to 2022 and confounding factors that affect the outcome of the surgery at a minimum of one year. The study was divided into two phases. Phase I included the construction of a prediction model

Morphology of the scaphotrapeziotrapezoid joint: A multi-domain statistical shape modeling approach.

The scaphotrapeziotrapezoid (STT) joint is involved in load transmission between the wrist and thumb. A quantitative description of baseline STT joint morphometrics is needed to capture the variation of normal anatomy as well as to guide staging of osteoarthritis. Statistical shape modeling (SSM) techniques quantify variations in three-dimensional shapes and relative positions. The objectives of this study are to describe the morphology of the STT joint using a multi-domain SSM. We asked: (1) What are the dominant modes of variation that impact bone and articulation morphology at the STT joint

Development of a Statistical Shape Model and Assessment of Anatomical Shape Variations in the Hemipelvis.

Knowledge about anatomical shape variations in the pelvis is mandatory for selection, fitting, positioning, and fixation in pelvic surgery. The current knowledge on pelvic shape variation mostly relies on point-to-point measurements on 2D X-ray images and computed tomography (CT) slices. Three-dimensional region-specific assessments of pelvic morphology are scarce. Our aim was to develop a statistical shape model of the hemipelvis to assess anatomical shape variations in the hemipelvis. CT scans of 200 patients (100 male and 100 female) were used to obtain segmentations. An iterative closest p

Growth patterns and shape development of the paediatric mandible - A 3D statistical model.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To develop a 3D morphable model of the normal paediatric mandible to analyse shape development and growth patterns for males and females. METHODS: Computed tomography (CT) data was collected for 242 healthy children referred for CT scan between 2011 and 2018 aged between 0 and 47 months (mean, 20.6 ± 13.4 months, 59.9% male). Thresholding techniques were used to segment the mandible from the CT scans. All mandible meshes were annotated using a defined set of 52 landmarks and processed such that all meshes followed a consistent triangulation. Following this, the mandible meshes

A Radiation-Free Classification Pipeline for Craniosynostosis Using Statistical Shape Modeling.

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis is a condition caused by the premature fusion of skull sutures, leading to irregular growth patterns of the head. Three-dimensional photogrammetry is a radiation-free alternative to the diagnosis using computed tomography. While statistical shape models have been proposed to quantify head shape, no shape-model-based classification approach has been presented yet. METHODS: We present a classification pipeline that enables an automated diagnosis of three types of craniosynostosis. The pipeline is based on a statistical shape model built from photogrammetric surface

Asymmetry of the pelvic ring evaluated by CT-based 3D statistical modeling.

The human pelvis is a complex anatomical structure that consists of the innominate bones, sacrum and coccyx to form the pelvic ring. Even though considered to be a symmetric entity, asymmetry of the pelvic ring (APR) might occur to alter its anatomy, function, or biomechanics or to impact assessment and treatment of clinical cases. APR and its assessment is complicated by the intricate anatomy of the pelvic ring. There is only limited information and understanding about APR with no established evaluation methods existing. The objective of the present study was to adopt CT-based 3D statistical

A statistics-based model for prediction of achievability of the planning criteria for IMRT planning.

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a statistics-based model to predict the achievability of the planning criteria for intensity-modulated radiation therapy planning. A statistics-based model was proposed to predict the achievability of the planning criteria based on the structure set. A retrospective study was performed to validate the proposed model. A total of 160 prostate cases and 134 nasopharynx (NP) cases were used as the training set to build the model while 200 cases for each treatment site were used to validate the proposed model. An overlapping ratio and the minimum

A statistical shape model of the skull developed from a South African population.

This paper discusses the development of a statistical shape model (SSM) of the skull from a South African population. A total of 16 skulls is used together with a reference from the Basel Face Model. A free-form deformation model is built using the reference model and the squared exponential kernel. The freeform model is used to establish dense correspondence across the skull sample and the in-correspondence skulls are then used to build an SSM. The validity of the SSM is assessed using leave-one-out cross-validation with its generality ranging between 1.47 mm and 1.84 mm and, the specificity

Probabilistic forecasts of trachoma transmission at the district level: A statistical model comparison.

The World Health Organization and its partners are aiming to eliminate trachoma as a public health problem by 2020. In this study, we compare forecasts of TF prevalence in 2011 for 7 different statistical and mechanistic models across 9 de-identified trachoma endemic districts, representing 4 unique trachoma endemic countries. We forecast TF prevalence between 1-6 years ahead in time and compare the 7 different models to the observed 2011 data using a log-likelihood score. An SIS model, including a district-specific random effect for the district-specific transmission coefficient, had the high

A statistical model for quantification and prediction of cardiac remodelling: application to tetralogy of Fallot.

Cardiac remodelling plays a crucial role in heart diseases. Analyzing how the heart grows and remodels over time can provide precious insights into pathological mechanisms, eventually resulting in quantitative metrics for disease evaluation and therapy planning. This study aims to quantify the regional impacts of valve regurgitation and heart growth upon the end-diastolic right ventricle (RV) in patients with tetralogy of Fallot, a severe congenital heart defect. The ultimate goal is to determine, among clinical variables, predictors for the RV shape from which a statistical model that predict

Statistical modeling of Agatston score in multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis (MESA).

The MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) is an ongoing study of the prevalence, risk factors, and progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease in a multi-ethnic cohort. It provides a valuable opportunity to examine the development and progression of CAC (coronary artery calcium), which is an important risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease. In MESA, about half of the CAC scores are zero and the rest are continuously distributed. Such data has been referred to as "zero-inflated data" and may be described using two-part models. Existing two-part model studies have

Improving segmentation of the left ventricle using a two-component statistical model.

Quality of segmentations obtained by 3D Active Appearance Models (AAMs) crucially depends on underlying training data. MRI heart data, however, often come noisy, incomplete, with respiratory-induced motion, and do not fulfill necessary requirements for building an AAM. Moreover, AAMs are known to fail when attempting to model local variations. Inspired by the recent work on split models we propose an alternative to the methods based on pure 3D AAM segmentation. We interconnect a set of 2D AAMs by a 3D shape model. We show that our approach is able to cope with imperfect data and improves segme

The influence of personality on nicotine craving: a hierarchical multivariate statistical prediction model.

The present study proposes a hierarchical multivariate statistical prediction model which enables to determine the most prominent variables (physiological, biochemical and personality factors) related to nicotine craving and dopaminergic activation. Based on animal studies reporting a reduction of the rewarding effects of psychotropic drugs after blockade or destruction of the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system, changes in nicotine craving after pharmacological manipulation by means of a DA agonist (lisuride 0.2 mg) and a DA antagonist (fluphenazine 2 mg) were assessed in 36 healthy male heavy sm

Prognostic indicators for intrauterine insemination (IUI): statistical model for IUI success.

A retrospective analysis of 260 completed intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles was used in an attempt to identify significant variables predictive of treatment success. Couples received a maximum of three IUI cycles for the treatment of anovulation, cervical factors or unexplained infertility. Male factor problems were largely excluded by pretreatment screening. The overall pregnancy rate was 19.6% per completed cycle, the miscarriage rate 15.6%, the multiple pregnancy rate 23.5% and the cancellation rate 19%. Logistic regression identified four significant IUI variables [follicle number (P

Advancing grapevine phenology predictions: a comparison of regression-based statistical learning approach and conventional models in mediterranean environment.

Climate conditions can significantly affect plant dormancy and growing season, impacting crop development and its productivity. Temperature is considered the primary driver of grapevine phenology, with endodormancy and ecodormancy largely regulated by chilling and forcing accumulations, respectively. Nevertheless, additional climatic factors, such as precipitation, radiation and atmospheric circulation patterns, may also contribute and regulate variability of different phenological phases. As hotspot of climate change, Mediterranean regions are witnessing negative compounding effects by enhanc

Cough Sound Based Deep Learning Models for Diagnosis of COVID-19 Using Statistical Features and Time-Frequency Spectrum.

This paper presents a deep learning model that can classify COVID-19 patients through cough sounds. The cough sound data were selected from the Cambridge data set which is a crowedsourced data set collected from the Cambridge COVID-19 sounds application. Virufy and Coswara data sets were also selected for external testing. For the sound waveform, we extracted Variable frequency complex demodulation (VFCDM) image and applied to Xception, which is selected as the pre-trained model. Then we extracted zero crossing rate (ZCR), and spectral roll-off (SR), spectral centroid (SC), spectral bandwidth
