The Highly Interrelated Morbidity Respiratory Viruses Cause Among Humans and Animals in Mongolia.

Mongolia is unique for its cold climate, its large populations of free-roaming livestock, its dense populations of people living in often crowded cities with high air pollution, and its subsequent elevated respiratory virus morbidity among its people and animals. In this narrative review, we examine what is known about this respiratory virus morbidity in Mongolia, organized through the lens of six respiratory virus families: Orthomyxoviridae, Coronaviridae, Pneumoviridae, Adenoviridae, Paramyxoviridae and Picornaviridae. We do so by summarizing published reports regarding respiratory virus mor

Detection of Tick-borne Encephalitis Virus in Ixodes Ticks Collected Near Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a flavivirus that causes a range of clinical presentations including severe neurological complications in humans. In Mongolia, TBEV is primarily transmitted by the Ixodes persulcatus tick, which serves as both a vector and reservoir. Historically, TBEV in Mongolian ticks has been predominantly described in the forested regions of the Bulgan and Selenge aimags (provinces). METHODS: In 2021 and 2024, I persulcatus ticks (n = 240) were collected from Bulgan and Tuv aimags in northern Mongolia, respectively, and pooled into 52 groups of 1 to 7 t

Provincial Maternal and Child Information System in Inner Mongolia, China: Descriptive Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: After the implementation of 2- and 3-child policies, the rising proportion of high-age and high-risk pregnancies put enormous pressure on maternal and child health (MCH) services for China. This populous nation with an increasing population flow imperatively required the support of large-scale information systems for management. Municipal MCH information systems were commonly applied in developed cities of eastern provinces in China. However, implementation of provincial MCH information systems in relatively low-income areas is lacking. In 2020, the implementation of a regional mat

Dental Anomaly in Hapalodectes dux (Hapalodectidae, Mesonychia) from the Late Paleocene of Mongolia.

The holotype of Hapalodectes dux Lopatin, 2001 from the Upper Paleocene of Mongolia (Tsagan-Khushu locality, Naran Bulak Formation, Zhigden Member) is a lower jaw with complete dentition, showing healed alveoli in place of the right P3. Examination of the holotype using X-ray microtomography revealed a rare dental anomaly previously unknown in fossil mammals, namely the presence of the inverted (positioned upside down and rotated lingual side labially) impacted premolar inside the dentary. The cause of this anomaly may be an aberration of a tooth bud location or an injury.

Comparison of mitochondrial genetic variation of Taenia hydatigena cysticerci from China and Mongolia.

Parasitic infection is one of the many challenges facing livestock production globally. Cysticercosis tenuicollis is a common parasitic disease in domestic and wild ruminants (intermediate host) caused by the larval stage of Taenia hydatigena that primarily infects dogs (definitive host). Although genetic studies on this parasite exist, only a few describe the genetic variation of this parasite in Mongolia. Our aim was thus, to identify the mitochondrial differences in ovine isolates of Cysticercus tenuicollis entering China from Mongolia and comparison with existing Chinese isolates from shee

Risk factors and spatio-temporal patterns of livestock anthrax in Khuvsgul Province, Mongolia.

Anthrax is a worldwide zoonotic disease. Anthrax has long been a public health and socio-economic issue in Mongolia. Presently, there is no spatial information on carcass burial sites as a potential hazard of future anthrax outbreaks and possible risk factors associated with anthrax occurrences in Mongolia. Here, we analyze retrospective data (1986-2015) on the disposal sites of livestock carcasses to describe historical spatio-temporal patterns of livestock anthrax in Khuvsgul Province, which showed the highest anthrax incidence rate in Mongolia. From the results of spatial mean and standard

Modeling the transmission dynamics of sheep brucellosis in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China.

Brucellosis is one of the major zoonotic diseases in China, especially in Inner Mongolia where occurs the largest number of human brucellosis cases of Mainland China, which can be attributed to the large number of sheep kept there, since at least 90% of the human brucellosis cases are caused by sheep. Therefore, given the characteristics of the brucellosis infection in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, we propose a dynamic model for the sheep-human transmission of brucellosis, involving sheep population, human population and brucella in the environment. We first determine the basic reproductio

Human cystic echinococcosis in two Mongolian communities in Hobukesar (China) and Bulgan (Mongolia).

In order to investigate the prevalence of human cystic echinococcosis (CE) in traditional Mongolian communities in western Mongolia and Xinjiang (northwest China), studies were carried out between 1995 and 2000, on two ethnically identical populations in Hobukesar (China) and Bulgan (Mongolia). The prevalence of human hepatic CE in the two communities was significantly different. In Hobukesar, human CE prevalence by ultrasound was 2.7% (49/1844), while in Bulgan it was 0.2% (4/1609) (P<0.001). Dog surveys showed that coproantigen-positive rates or dog necropsy positives were similar in both co

Metatranscriptomic analysis reveals the diversity of RNA viruses in ticks in Inner Mongolia, China.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are widely distributed throughout China and are the second most prevalent pathogen vectors in the world, following only mosquitoes. Tick bites can lead to Lyme disease, forest encephalitis, and other illnesses that may result in death under severe circumstances. Materials and methods: Ticks collected from March 2021 to May 2023 were pooled and used in metatranscriptomic analyses to gain insight into the diversity and distribution of tick-borne viruses in Inner Mongolia. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) outcomes were validated, and viral prevalence across distinct tick species

Assessing the impact of sand and dust storm on agriculture: Empirical evidence from Mongolia.

Assessing the economic impact of sand and dust storms provides critical insights to policy development and reforms; a subject that is gaining more attention as risk management becomes the dominant approach for hazard mitigation policies. To assess the causal impact of sand and dust storms on agriculture, specifically on crop and livestock revenue and physical production, random year-to-year variations in dust exposure were analyzed using a fixed effect regression. To complete this analysis, weather and climate data from the on-ground meteorological stations was combined with the household leve

Seroprevalence and risk factors of tick-borne encephalitis in Mongolia between 2016 and 2022.

The tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a zoonotic agent that causes severe encephalitis in humans and is transmitted through the bites of infected ticks. Ixodes ticks are the primary vector for TBEV in Mongolia, and approximately 3.4% carry the TBEV. The ticks are capable of not only transmitting these viruses but also serve as excellent reservoir hosts. The Dermacenter tick species may have similar properties. TBEV is a significant cause of virus-related diseases of the central nervous system in many European countries as well as in China, Russia, and Mongolia. Our objectives were to inv
