Anniversary reaction as seasonal mood disorder.

We describe the case of a patient who, after a traumatic experience at the age of 12, had a series of anniversary depressive episodes at 16, 17, 18 and 19 years of age, followed by a series of anniversary manic episodes at the ages of 21, 23, 24, 25 and 26 years. All of these episodes occurred almost always a few days before or after the date of the accident and only when the patient was residing in his home town, the place of the traumatic event. The case fulfills the DSM-III-R criteria for seasonal mood disorder, but differs from previously described cases in that: (a) both depressive and ma

Mood disorder following cerebrovascular accident.

Depression appears to be common after stroke, and therefore may have a bearing upon rehabilitation. To examine whether the depression is due to a specific brain lesion, or is reactive to the consequent disability, this study looked at the frequency and associations of depressed mood in a stroke rehabilitation unit in-patient population, unselected for site of lesion. Depression affected 50% of the patients; history of previous psychiatric disorder and cerebrovascular accident appeared to be important risk factors. There were hemispheric differences in the relationships between measures, with b

Neurocognitive and adaptive phenotypes in adolescent inpatients with mood disorders: an exploratory study on disruptive mood dysregulation disorder in the framework of depressive disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Few studies on adolescents have investigated intelligence quotient (IQ) in mood disorders. Evidence on Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD), a controversial entity among depressive disorders, is more limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed an exploratory study on adolescent inpatients with unipolar mood disorders to test specific impairment in cognitive and adaptive profile. We also considered common psychopathological comorbidities. We retrospectively collected data on inpatients with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD), DMDD or Depressive Disorder - No

[The trends of mood disorders in ICD-11: bipolar and depressive disorders].

The international classification of diseases 11th (ICD-11) revision is due by 2015. The ICD-11 beta draft has recently been released, which includes a prospective change in the content of mood disorders. The ICD-11 may separate the disorders into bipolar and depressive disorders as a consequence of an evaluation for the feasibility of a meta-structure for mental and behavioral disorders. In addition, the bipolar disorders may be divided into type I and II disorders. The depressive disorders may include new diseases, i. e., disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, mixed depressive anxiety, and p

Editorial: Antidepressants to the Rescue in Severe Mood Dysregulation and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder?

Children with irritability and outbursts pose a serous therapeutic problem. Many of them have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with emotion dysregulation, which is sometimes captured in the diagnosis of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). Some follow-up data find a connection between DMDD and depression and anxiety in adults. This prompted Towbin and colleagues1 to launch a trial where children (ages 7-17) with DMDD were treated first with methylphenidate (MPH) and then randomized to citalopram (CTP) or placebo over 8 weeks. The response to CTP was complicated by lack

Association of Strabismus With Mood Disorders, Schizophrenia, and Anxiety Disorders Among Children.

IMPORTANCE: Children with strabismus have poorer functional vision and decreased quality of life than those without strabismus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between strabismus and mental illness among children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study analyzed claims data from the OptumLabs Data Warehouse, a longitudinal deidentified commercial insurance claims database, from 12 005 189 patients enrolled in the health plan between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2017. Eligibility criteria included age younger than 19 years at the time of strabismus diagnosis,

Psychomotor Agitation and Mood Disorders in Patients with Intellectual Disabilities: Efficacy of Treatment with Mood Regulators.

The frameworks of impulsivity and temperamental irritability of people with intellectual disabilities, presenting disabilities both for organic cause, e.g. postpartum, and for congenital mental retardation, may often present impulse control disorders, irritability and psychomotor restlessness, busyness and insomnia, from likely non-epileptic neuronal dysfunction. The patients with intellectual disabilities presenting mood disorders need to be treated with a therapy similar to that of other patients with mood disorders in the bipolar spectrum (namely predominantly with mood regulators), even if

CURRENT STATE OF PSILOCYBIN-ASSISTED THERAPY IN MOOD DISORDERS.

Psychedelics are currently undergoing a scientific renaissance, with modern studies investigating therapeutic efficacy of psychedelic-assisted therapy in a range of psychiatric conditions. In particular, psilocybin-assisted therapy (PAT) has been suggested to have positive effects on patients suffering from depression and psychiatric distress associated with life-threatening disease - contexts with growing needs for alternative treatments - in a therapeutic setting involving fewer doses and less important adverse effect compared to that of classic psychotrope administration. Psychedelics are p

Serum angioneurin levels following electroconvulsive therapy for mood disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in treating mood disorders (MDs) is hypothesized to be mediated by the induction of neurotrophic factors (denoted "angioneurins") that trigger neuronal plasticity. This study aimed to assess the effects of ECT on serum angioneurin levels in patients with MD. METHODS: A total of 110 patients with MDs including 30 with unipolar depression, 25 with bipolar depression (BD), 55 with bipolar mania (BM), and 50 healthy controls were included in the study. Patients were subdivided into two groups: those who received ECT + medication (12 ECT

Prenatal mood and anxiety disorders and associated cytokine changes.

BACKGROUND: We examined whether women with prenatal mood and anxiety disorders would exhibit differential pro- and anti-inflammatory marker trajectories during the prenatal and postpartum periods compared to women without these disorders. METHODS: Approximately 179 pregnant women participated in a longitudinal study conducted in two urban areas. Blood samples for inflammatory markers were collected at six study visits. The Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV (SCID) was administered to participants scoring above cutoffs on anxiety and depression. Pregnant women with SCID Axis I diagno

Alcohol Withdrawal and the Associated Mood Disorders-A Review.

Recreational use of alcohol is a social norm in many communities worldwide. Alcohol use in moderation brings pleasure and may protect the cardiovascular system. However, excessive alcohol consumption or alcohol abuse are detrimental to one's health. Three million deaths due to excessive alcohol consumption were reported by the World Health Organization. Emerging evidence also revealed the danger of moderate consumption, which includes the increased risk to cancer. Alcohol abuse and periods of withdrawal have been linked to depression and anxiety. Here, we present the effects of alcohol consump

Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders: A Lexicon of Metaphors.

Undiagnosed and untreated postpartum mental health disorders represent a silent health crisis. The aim of this paper was to develop a lexicon of metaphors women use to describe their postpartum mood and anxiety disorders to assist holistic nurses in recognizing as early as possible these struggling mothers. Mothers may not know the medical terminology to articulate their mental health problems and may turn to using metaphors. The metaphors included in this lexicon were obtained from the author's earlier qualitative studies of metaphors women used to describe their experiences of postpartum dep

Inflammation as a treatment target in mood disorders: review.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders, i.e. major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorders, are leading sources of disability worldwide. Currently available treatments do not yield remission in approximately a third of patients with a mood disorder. This is in part because these treatments do not target a specific core pathology underlying these heterogeneous disorders. In recent years, abnormal inflammatory processes have been identified as putative pathophysiological mechanisms and treatment targets in mood disorders, particularly among individuals with treatment-resistant conditions. AIMS: In

Personalized medicine: Prediction of disease vulnerability in mood disorders.

Personalized or precision medicine is a medical discipline that proposes tailoring health care to each individual by integrating data from their genetic makeup, epigenetic modifications, other biomarkers, clinical symptoms and environmental exposures. Currently, patients typically present for treatment of mood disorders relatively late in the disease course and this is of great concern both because delay in attaining remission reduces the success of subsequent treatment and depressive episodes have negative cumulative effects on the brain and body. In this article we will discuss progress in p

Current Neural and Behavioral Dimensional Constructs across Mood Disorders.

Our understanding of the underlying neurobiology for mood disorders is still limited. We present an integrated model for conceptualizing and understanding mood disorders drawing upon a broad literature pertinent to mood disorders. The integrated model of emotion processing and regulation incorporates the linguistic constructs of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative. In particular, we focus on the Positive Valence domain/circuit (PVC), highlighting recent reward research and the Negative Valence domain/circuit (NVC), highlighting rumination. Furthermore, we also illustrate the Cogniti

Single mothers have a higher risk of mood disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has shown single mothers to be at greater risk for both physical and mental health disorders as compared to married mothers. Psychiatric disorders, in particular depression, have been shown to be more prevalent in single mothers than married mothers. This study was aimed at comparing the prevalence of depression, other mood, and anxiety disorders in single and married mothers in a multiethnic Asian society. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Singapore Mental Health Study (SMHS) was a cross-sectional survey of the representative population of Singapore. The survey targe

The serotonergic system in mood disorders and suicidal behaviour.

A stress-diathesis explanatory model of suicidal behaviour has proved to be of heuristic value, and both clinical and neurobiological components can be integrated into such a model. A trait deficiency in serotonin input to the anterior cingulate and ventromedial prefrontal cortex is found in association with suicide, and more recently non-fatal suicidal behaviour, and is linked to decision-making and suicide intent by imaging and related studies in vivo. The same neural circuitry and serotonin deficiency may contribute to impulsive aggressive traits that are part of the diathesis for suicidal

Bright-light therapy in the treatment of mood disorders.

Bright-light therapy (BLT) is established as the treatment of choice for seasonal affective disorder/winter type (SAD). In the last two decades, the use of BLT has expanded beyond SAD: there is evidence for efficacy in chronic depression, antepartum depression, premenstrual depression, bipolar depression and disturbances of the sleep-wake cycle. Data on the usefulness of BLT in non-seasonal depression are promising; however, further systematic studies are still warranted. In this review, the authors present a comprehensive overview of the literature on BLT in mood disorders. The first part elu
