A historical appraisal of America's experience with "pyromania"--a diagnosis in search of a disorder.

When "pyromania" from 1840-1890 is reviewed, it stands out as a concept that at first found favor in an era of moral insanity and moral treatment. During this period pyromania was variously labeled as a form of monomania, moral insanity, impulsive mania, or instinctive mania. As early as 1850, and clearly after the Civil War, however, controversial arguments regarding the locus of personal responsibilty emerged. Arguments were put forward that there could be diseased brains but not diseased minds. Without the proof of an organic lesion in the brain, fire-setting became an act whose locus reste

Ethical and legal controversies in cloning for biomedical research--a South African perspective.

Therapeutic embryonic stem cell research raises a number of ethical and legal issues. The promised benefits are new and important knowledge of human embryological development, gene action, and the production of transplantable tissue and organs that could be effective in reversing or curing currently irreversible disease processes. However, this research involves the deliberate production, use, and ultimate destruction of cloned embryos, hence re-awakening the debate on the moral status of the embryo. Other moral anxieties include the possibility that women (as donors of ova) would be exploited

Diagnosing moral disorder: the discovery and evolution of fetal alcohol syndrome.

The diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) was invented in 1973. This paper investigates the process by which a cluster of birth defects associated with exposure to alcohol in utero came to be a distinct medical diagnosis, focusing on the first ten years of the medical literature on FAS. Fetal alcohol syndrome was "discovered" by a group of American dysmorphologists who published the first case reports and coined the term FAS. However, the nature of the diagnosis and its salient symptoms were determined collectively over time by the medical profession as a whole. The paper traces the natura

Trust tangles: Who do kids trust? Unraveling young children's attitudes in the gossip mill.

OBJECTIVE: As an important channel of social-information transmission, gossip enables individuals to acquire reputational information indirectly and to guide partner selection. This study systematically investigates the cognitive development from social evaluation to trust-based decision-making in children. Through two experiments, we examine how young children evaluate different roles in gossip scenarios and how those evaluations influence subsequent trust decisions. METHODS: Study 1 examined how 141 children (aged 5-7) integrated factors such as gossip valence, emotional cues, and informati

Maternity providers' moral experiences addressing maternal drug use.

BackgroundAddressing drug use among pregnant and postpartum women is complicated by the social, ethical, and legal interplay between maternal and child needs. The moral experiences of providers as they care for this population are poorly understood. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the qualitative literature on the moral experiences of prescribing maternity providers managing the care of pregnant and postpartum women who use drugs (PPWUD), specifically focused on drug testing and child welfare reporting decisions.MethodsThe Hunt and Carnevale (2011) bioethics framework was used to d

Does mindfulness help employees express ethical voice? a moderated mediation model of mindfulness and ethical voice.

Following a series of major ethical scandals in various organizations, researchers have increasingly sought to understand the role of ethical voice in the workplace. Existing ethical voice research centres on leadership-focused models and overlooks the individual psychological mechanisms connecting traits to ethical voice, creating a key gap in understanding the micro-foundations of such behaviour. The results of a longitudinal field study featuring 453 participants from one Chinese firm were used to investigate the model hypothesized in this research. The results reveal that employee mindfuln

[Fetal indication for the termination of pregnancy from an ethical viewpoint].

The author goes into five ethical problems involved in foetal indication for termination of pregnancy: 1. The method of prenatal diagnosis is considered to be ethically neutral. 2. Arguments and indication for termination of pregnancy in case of foetal indication are critically reviewed. Four degrees of severity are distinguished in the field of prenatal damage. 3. After expounding the arguments for a continuation of pregnancy, the only case in which termination is declared as ethically justifiable is the occurrence of "total malformation" of the foetus (anencephaly). 4. In everyday practice,

Slow Trauma: Reframing Concepts of Moral Injury in Trauma-Informed Ethics Consultation.

AbstractAn emerging area of interest in healthcare ethics consultation (HEC) is the potential for moral injury and trauma to surrogate decision makers (SDMs). Introduced by Anani, Lanphier, and Fiester, trauma-informed ethics consultation (TIEC) recognizes that these encounters frequently involve exigent circumstances and the stressful misalignment between the provider's goals and the expectations of SDMs. Moral injuries sustained in HEC can be intensified by perceived feelings of mistrust, fear, betrayal, and failure. Recognizing signs of emotional, physical, and mental distress resulting fro

Intellectual property and biotechnology: the European debate.

The European patent system allows for the introduction of moral issues into decisions about the granting of patents. This feature has greatly impacted European debates about the patenting of biotechnology. This essay explores the European experience, in both the European Union and the European Patent Organization. It argues that there has been great confusion surrounding these issues primarily because the Europeans have not developed a general theory about when exclusion from patentability is the best social mechanism for dealing with morally offensive technologies.

If someone is wrong but sincere, is it a lie? The role of objective falsity, intention, and in children's understanding of lying.

This study investigates how objective reality (truth vs falsity), intention (honest vs dishonest) and motivation (prosocial vs self-serving) affect lie labelling and moral judgment of lies. Using a comic-based task, we conducted a study with 5-6-year-olds and 9-10-year-olds (N = 194). Participants were presented with scenarios where a protagonist made either prosocial or self-serving statements that were truthful or false, with honest or deceptive intent. Results showed that younger children were more likely to judge objectively false statements as lies, while older children placed greater emp

Artificial Intelligence and Ophthalmology.

Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly and making its way into all areas of our lives. This review discusses developments and potential practices regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the field of ophthalmology, and the related topic of medical ethics. Various artificial intelligence applications related to the diagnosis of eye diseases were researched in books, journals, search engines, print and social media. Resources were cross-checked to verify the information. Artificial intelligence algorithms, some of which were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, have been

Curing "moral disability": brain trauma and self-control in Victorian science and fiction.

While, historically, the disabled body has appeared in literature as "monstrous," burgeoning psychological theories of the Victorian period predicated an unusual shift. In a culture of sexual anxiety and fears of devolution and moral decay, the physically disabled and "weak" are portrayed as strangely free from moral corruption. Unlike the cultural link between deviance and disability witnessed in the medical literature and eugenic approach to generation, authors of narrative fiction-particularly Charles Dickens, but Wilkie Collins, Charlotte Yonge, and others as well-portray disabled characte

Defenses and morality: Adam Smith, Sigmund Freud, and contemporary psychoanalysis.

In this paper we follow the development and transmission of moral learning from Adam Smith's impartial spectator to Sigmund Freud's superego and then to contemporary psychoanalysis. We argue that defenses are an integral component in the acquisition of any moral system. Elaborating on this argument, we assert that there is a progression from defensive systems that are "closed" to defensive systems that are "open," as defined in a recent work by Novick and Novick. The former system is "static, avoids reality, and is characterized by power dynamics, sadomasochism, and omnipotent defense." The la

Professional ethics cultivation as a driver of faculty development: an analysis of its four underlying logics.

INTRODUCTION: Professional ethics cultivation serves as a vital approach to building a high-quality teaching workforce, exerting a foundational and endogenously driving effect on the development of university faculty. METHODS: Grounded in the perspective of individual teachers' self-moral cultivation, this study employs theoretical analysis to construct a four-dimensional logical framework through which professional ethics cultivation empowers faculty development. RESULTS: The analysis reveals four core endogenous driving forces: professional ethics cultivation functions as (1) a process fac

Imago Hominis: Artificial Intelligence as Moral Mirror and the Recovery of Creator Responsibility.

The growing literature on artificial intelligence (AI) and the imago Dei has focused primarily on whether AI systems can or might share in the image of God, asking whether machines possess properties, functions, or relational capacities that qualify them as image-bearers. This article argues that this dominant framing, while theologically generative, obscures a more urgent question: What do AI systems reveal about their human creators? Drawing on the theological principle that creation reflects the character of the creator, this article develops the imago hominis (the image of the human) as a

Ensuring palliative care to critically ill patients is also vital to support the ICU staff.

Although intensive Care Unit (ICU) personnel share a moral imperative to provide palliative care, their compassionate intentions are often undermined by communication constraints, structurally inadequate systems and care environments, for example electronic health record demands superseding time spent with a dying patient, or family separation at the time of death. Moral distress and burnout among ICU healthcare professionals are a growing global concern, exacerbated by the complex demands of critical care settings. High patient acuity, emotional strain, ethical dilemmas, and exposure to death

Constructing knowledge and moral skills through hospital clown interventions: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital clown practice is grounded in a form of situated wisdom that extends beyond entertainment. Through their interventions, hospital clowns develop and enact moral know-how that enables them to interpret clinical environments, respond to uncertainty, and make respectful decisions in real time. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study explores the moral know-how and skills developed and enacted by hospital clowns during clinical encounters and examines how these extend beyond technical and communicative performance. METHODS: A qualitative study inform by a phenomenological perspecti

Cultivating moral sensitivity and restraint-free practice in nurses and midwives.

Nursing and midwifery students are frequently exposed to physical restraint during clinical training, often presented as necessary for patient safety. However, growing evidence challenges this assumption, highlighting the risks associated with restraint and the limited implementation of effective alternatives in practice. Studies show that alternatives are considered in only a minority of cases, while organisational and educational factors contribute to the persistence and normalisation of restraint. Although professional codes define restraint as an exceptional, last-resort measure, this prin

Norm enforcement, learning and repair: three moral logics in organisational responses to unintended and unwanted healthcare outcomes.

Unintended and unwanted outcomes are an inherent aspect of healthcare practice, posing significant moral challenges for organisations on how to do justice to the situation and the people involved, aimed at strengthening safety and preventing future harm. How an organisation responds to these outcomes is crucial, as this affects the quality of care, public trust and can have a profound impact on both patients and healthcare professionals. This paper develops a conceptual framework delineating three distinct moral logics for responding to unintended and unwanted outcomes: norm enforcement (1), l
