[Malaria prevention].

Malaria prevention. Due to the huge difference in risk of infection between tropical Asia and America on the one hand and sub-saharan Africa on the other (ratio of 1 to 1000) and lack of transmission of Plasmodium falciparum in Asia and tropical America, it is now recommended to no longer prescribe chemoprophylaxis in these low-risk areas in the vast majority of cases (conventional stays), retaining the simple adage: Sub-Saharan Africa yes, elsewhere no ! In any case, travelers should be advised to limit the mosquito bites at night (especially repellents but also mosquito nets impregnated and

Impact of elevated CO2 background levels on the host-seeking behaviour of Aedes aegypti.

Mosquitoes rely on carbon dioxide (CO2) to detect and orient towards their blood hosts. However, the variable and rapid fluctuations of atmospheric CO2 concentrations may have an impact on the host-seeking behaviour of mosquitoes. In this study, we analysed the effect of transient elevated background levels of CO2 on the host-seeking behaviour and the physiological characteristics of the CO2-sensitive olfactory receptor neurones (ORNs) in female yellow fever mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti. We show that the take-off and source contact behaviour of A. aegypti is impeded at elevated background levels

Exploring the Scope and Status of Biological Interventions in Malaria Control.

Malaria is a major health concern worldwide, with an estimated 282 million infections and 610,000 deaths in 2024. Plasmodium parasites, spread by female Anopheles mosquitoes, are the cause. Several interventions, such as indoor residual spraying, insecticide-treated bed nets, and antimalarial drugs, have reduced transmission; however, challenges such as insecticide resistance, environmental concerns, and climate change have led to the exploration of alternative approaches. To address these limitations, biological control, which involves the use of natural organisms and biological agents to tar

High efficacy of chlorfenapyr-based net Interceptor® G2 against pyrethroid-resistant malaria vectors from Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: The increasing reports of resistance to pyrethroid insecticides associated with reduced efficacy of pyrethroid-only interventions highlight the urgency of introducing new non-pyrethroid-only control tools. Here, we investigated the performance of piperonyl-butoxide (PBO)-pyrethroid [Permanet 3.0 (P3.0)] and dual active ingredients (AI) nets [Interceptor G2 (IG2): containing pyrethroids and chlorfenapyr and Royal Guard (RG): containing pyrethroids and pyriproxyfen] compared to pyrethroid-only net Royal Sentry (RS) against pyrethroid-resistant malaria vectors in Cameroon. Barriers of persistent long-lasting insecticidal nets utilization in villages around Lake Tana, Northwest Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health problem in Ethiopia. The use of LLINs is an effective approach to reducing transmission. Persistent use of LLINs is determined by numerous factors. Quantitative studies have assessed LLIN ownership and utilization, but the behavioral, socio-cultural, socioeconomic and net distribution contexts that impact their use have not been examined in depth. This study aimed to explore barriers of persistent LLIN use among communities around Lake Tana. METHODS: Twenty-three community residents who owned LLINs (15) or not (8) during the study period and 3

In-vitro examination of the biocompatibility of fibroblast cell lines on alloplastic meshes and sterilized polyester mosquito mesh.

INTRODUCTION: The use of alloplastic implants for tissue strengthening when treating hernias is an established therapy worldwide. Despite the high incidence of hernias in Africa and Asia, the implantation of costly mesh netting is not financially feasible. Because of that various investigative groups have examined the use of sterilized mosquito netting. The animal experiments as well as the clinical trials have both shown equivalent short- and long-term results. The goal of this paper is the comparison of biocompatibility of human fibroblasts on the established commercially available nets and

Sublethal insecticide exposure of larvae affects the blood-feeding behaviour of adult mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Due to their widespread use for controlling disease vectors and agricultural pests, insecticides have become ubiquitous in the environment, including in water bodies harbouring mosquito larvae. As a result, these larvae are continuously exposed to sublethal doses. Since this has long-lasting effects on the mosquitoes' physiology and life-history, we expected that it may also affect behaviours that underlie the mosquitoes' population dynamics and disease epidemiology, such as egg-laying preference, blood-feeding motivation and host-seeking behaviour. METHODS: Using an insecticide-s

In vivo screen of Plasmodium targets for mosquito-based malaria control.

The decline in malaria deaths has recently stalled owing to several factors, including the widespread resistance of Anopheles vectors to the insecticides used in long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs)1,2. One way to mitigate insecticide resistance is to directly kill parasites during their mosquito-stage of development by incorporating antiparasitic compounds into LLINs. This strategy can prevent onward parasite transmission even when insecticides lose efficacy3,4. Here, we performed an in vivo screen of compounds against the mosquito stages of Plasmodium falciparum development. Of the

Mosquito species associated with horses in Madagascar: a review of their vector status with regard to the epidemiology of West Nile fever.

In Madagascar, the high West Nile virus (WNV) antibody prevalence reported in horse populations suggests a high level of vector-horse contact. This study aims to characterize the mosquito species usually involved in WNV transmission in horse stables in Madagascar. Five horse stables were investigated in October and November 2016 in five distinct inland areas. Mosquitoes were collected using double net traps baited with human, poultry or horse as well as light traps. Blood meal identification from engorged females was performed using host-specific PCRs. A total of 2898 adult mosquitoes were col

Host (avian) biting preference of southern California Culex mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae).

The host preference of a vector mosquito species plays a significant role in determining human and animal risk of infection with mosquito-transmitted pathogens. Host preferences of common southern California Culex species for four bird species, American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), house sparrow (Passer domesticus), house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus), and mourning dove (Zenaida macroura), were examined by determining the proportion of each mosquito species that successfully engorged on each of the four bird species presented equally within a net trap to wild host-seeking mosquitoes. Impact of lambdacyhalothrin capsule suspension treated bed nets on malaria in tribal villages of Malkangiri district, Orissa, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Insecticide treated mosquito nets are increasingly being used in malaria control programmes. One of the problems with the treatment of bed nets with conventional formulations of insecticides was that regular washing of treated nets diminish insecticidal effect. Lambdacyhalothrin 2.5 capsule suspension (CS) (2.5% a.i., w/v), a new water-based microencapsulated formulation is reported to have wash-resistant property and longer persistence on the netting material than other formulations. We evaluated the impact of the use of nylon bed nets treated with lambdacyhalothrin 2.

Examining the determinants of mosquito-avoidance practices in two Kenyan cities.

BACKGROUND: This study assesses the behavioural and socio-economic factors associated with avoiding mosquitoes and preventing malaria in urban environments in Kenya. METHODS: Data from two cities in Kenya were gathered using a household survey and a two-stage cluster sample design. The cities were stratified based on planning and drainage observed across the urban areas. This helped control for the strong environmental and topographical variation that we assumed influences mosquito ecology. Individual interviews given to each household included questions on socio-economic status, education, h

The effect of DDT spraying and bed nets impregnated with pyrethroid insecticide on the incidence of Japanese encephalitis virus infection.

A retrospective investigation was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of DDT residual indoor spraying and bed nets impregnated with pyrethroid insecticide for Japanese encephalitis control in southern Henan province, China. DDT residual indoor spraying had no effect on the incidence of Japanese encephalitis, but it was greatly reduced after the introduction of pyrethroid-impregnated bed nets. Only a small effect on outdoor biting densities of Culex tritaeniorhyncus was found, although the number of mosquitoes resting inside bed nets decreased markedly after the introduction of bed net impr

Meta-analysis of studies on chemical, physical and biological agents in the control of Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a vector of international concern because it can transmit to humans three important arboviral diseases: yellow fever, dengue and chikungunya. Epidemics that are repeated year after year in a variety of urban centers indicate that there are control failures, allowing the vector to continue expanding. METHODS: To identify the most effective vector control strategies and the factors that contributed to the success or failure of each strategy, we carried out a systematic review with meta-analysis of articles published in 12 databases, from 1974 to the month of Decembe

Mathematical modelling and optimal control of malaria transmission with antimalarial drug and insecticide resistance.

This study presents a mathematical model to explore malaria transmission dynamics in the presence of antimalarial drug-resistant parasites and insecticide-resistant mosquitoes. The analytical findings demonstrate a stable disease-free equilibrium when the effective reproduction number is below one. For single-strain malaria infections, the endemic equilibrium may exhibit one, two or no solutions. The model is extended to incorporate three time-dependent controls: long-lasting insecticidal nets, antimalarial treatment and mosquito adulticides. Simulation results indicate that interventions excl

Dynamics modelling and control strategies of malaria transmission interruption by antimalarial-treated nets.

Malaria is one of the most burdensome vector-borne diseases in tropical and subtropical regions. Probst and Catteruccia, (Nature, 2025) proposed a novel strategy using antimalarial-treated nets (ATNs). These nets provide a physical barrier against mosquito bites while simultaneously delivering antimalarial drugs to mosquitoes, inhibiting parasite development within them. In this paper, we incorporate the ATN mechanism into a malaria transmission model. To capture the pharmacokinetics of antimalarial drugs and their inhibitory effects on Plasmodium development, we divide mosquitoes into five ca

Impact of Insecticide Resistance on the Effectiveness of Pyrethroid-Based Malaria Vectors Control Tools in Benin: Decreased Toxicity and Repellent Effect.

Since the first evidence of pyrethroids resistance in 1999 in Benin, mutations have rapidly increased in mosquitoes and it is now difficult to design a study including a control area where malaria vectors are fully susceptible. Few studies have assessed the after effect of resistance on the success of pyrethroid based prevention methods in mosquito populations. We therefore assessed the impact of resistance on the effectiveness of pyrethroids based indoor residual spraying (IRS) in semi-field conditions and long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in laboratory conditions. The results observed s
