Dental professionals' views on motivational interviewing for the prevention of dental caries with adolescents in central Norway.

BACKGROUND: Establishing positive oral health behaviours during adolescence should be a key priority to improve lifelong oral health. However, changing adolescent behaviours is known to be a challenge. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a method of working with patients to activate their motivation for change and has shown promising results within the dental setting. Yet, little is known about the actual experiences and perspectives of Norwegian dental health professionals in delivering motivational interviewing as part of routine care to their young patients. The overall aim of the present stu

Motivational interviewing with community-dwelling older adults after hip fracture (MIHip): protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Community-dwelling people recovering from hip fracture have the physical capacity to walk in their community but lack the confidence to do so. The primary aim of this trial is to determine whether motivational interviewing increases time spent walking at 12 months in community-dwelling people after hip fracture compared with an attention placebo control group. Secondary aims are to evaluate cost effectiveness, patient and health service outcomes and to complete a process evaluation. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: An assessor-blinded parallel group randomised controlled design with embedd

Tailored Motivational Interviewing (TMI): A Pilot Implementation-Effectiveness Trial to Promote MI Competence in Adolescent HIV Clinics.

This brief report describes results of piloted Tailored Motivational Interviewing (TMI). Tailoring focused on site-specific training needs, target patient behaviors, and implementation facilitators and barriers that staff anticipated. Participating staff (N = 31) at two adolescent HIV clinics completed a pre-training qualitative interview (N = 27), and MI competency assessments based on three pre- and six post-training standard patient role-plays (N = 27). Results included pre- to post-training MI competence improvement (t (153) = - 4.13, p ≤ 0.001) and change in competency category distributi

Enhancing Statin Adherence Using a Motivational Interviewing Intervention and Past Adherence Trajectories in Patients with Suboptimal Adherence.

BACKGROUND: Statins have been shown to be effective in reducing the occurrence of cardiovascular (CV) events and are widely prescribed for the risk reduction of CV diseases and recurrent CV events. However, poor adherence prevents some patients from receiving the maximum benefit of the therapy. Motivational interviewing (MoI) is a patient-centered collaborative approach that can be used to improve medication adherence. Group-based trajectory modeling depicts patterns of adherence over time and may help tailor the MoI intervention to further enhance adherence. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect o

Motivational interviewing to promote long-acting reversible contraception among Rwandan couples wishing to prevent or delay pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Few family-planning programs in Africa base demand creation and service delivery on theoretical models. Motivational interviewing is a counseling modality that facilitates reflection on the benefits and disadvantages of a health outcome to encourage behavior change. OBJECTIVES: We evaluate a couples-focused joint family-planning and HIV counseling intervention using motivational interviewing to enhance uptake of long-acting reversible contraception (Paragard copper intrauterine device or Jadelle hormonal implant) among Rwandan couples. STUDY DESIGN: In this experimental study, co

Sustained Benefits of Exercise-based Motivational Interviewing, but Only among Nonusers of Opioids in Patients with Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Given the known side effects of opioids and their potential effects on cognition, we sought to evaluate the benefits of motivational interviewing (MI) to promote physical activity on 2 subsets of participants with fibromyalgia (FM): nonusers and users of opioids. METHODS: This was a secondary data analysis of a 36-week randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of MI to promote physical activity among participants with FM. Participants were randomized to 1 of 2 treatment arms: 6 phone-based MI sessions (n = 107) or 6 sessions of FM self-management instructions [attention co

Research to encourage exercise for fibromyalgia (REEF): use of motivational interviewing, outcomes from a randomized-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Regular exercise is associated with important benefits in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). Unfortunately, long-term maintenance of exercise after a structured program is rare. The present study tested the efficacy of Motivational Interviewing (MI) to promote exercise and improve symptoms in patients with FM. METHODS: A total of 216 patients with FM were randomized to 6 MI sessions (n=107) or an equal number of FM self-management lessons (education control/EC, n=109). Co-primary endpoints were an increase of 30 minutes in moderate-vigorous physical activity and improvement in the F

Is the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing approach applicable to the treatment of eating disorders? A review.

Research in eating disorders is reviewed examining the (1) utility of the Transtheoretical Model in predicting outcome, and (2) efficacy of Motivational Interviewing (MI). There were promising results showing significant relationships between initial stage of change and treatment outcome related to eating pathology (not including purging), body mass index, and some aspects of psychopathology. Of those treatment studies utilising a control group, there was little indication that using MI conferred significant treatment benefit, with the exception of improving motivation and binge eating for peo

lmplementing lifestyle change through phone-based motivational interviewing in rural-based women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Substantial numbers of women with past gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) develop type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In northern New South Wales 23% of women attending diabetes services between 2007 and 2010 with T2DM previously had GDM. This study investigated whether phone-based lifestyle education using motivational interviewing resulted in positive lifestyle change post GDM for women in a large rural area. METHOD: Thirty-eight women were recruited to this pilot study following GDM diagnosis and randomly allocated to either the control or intervention group. Following basel

Applying Motivational Interviewing to Improve Counseling on Glaucoma Management and Medication Adherence: A Pilot Study With Ophthalmology Residents.

OBJECTIVES: Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered counseling style that has been shown to be effective in promoting behavioral change. However, it has not been commonly used in ophthalmology, despite its myriad applications, such as for improving topical medication adherence in glaucoma management. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate an MI workshop for ophthalmology residents focused on glaucoma counseling. DESIGN: From 2022 to 2023, A 1-hour interactive workshop was developed, which included a brief lecture, original videos demonstrating glaucoma

Implementation of male-specific motivational interviewing in Malawi: an assessment of intervention fidelity and barriers to scale-up.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment interruption (TI), defined as >28 days late for antiretroviral therapy appointment, is one of the greatest challenges in controlling southern African HIV epidemics. Negative client-provider interactions remain a major reason for TI and a barrier to return to care, especially for men. Motivational interviewing (MI) facilitates client-driven counselling and improves client-provider interactions by facilitating equitable, interactive counselling that helps clients understand and develop solutions for their unique needs. Fidelity of MI counselling in resource-constrained he

A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial to Assess the Impact of Motivational Interviewing on Initiating Behavioral Therapy for Migraine.

BACKGROUND: Relaxation, biofeedback, and cognitive behavioral therapy are evidence-based behavioral therapies for migraine. Despite such efficacy, research shows that only about half of patients initiate behavioral therapy recommended by their headache specialists. OBJECTIVE: Motivational interviewing (MI) is a widely used method to help patients explore and overcome ambivalence to enact positive life changes. We tested the hypothesis that telephone-based MI would improve initiation, scheduling, and attending behavioral therapy for migraine. METHODS: Single-blind randomized controlled trial

Client Retrospective Accounts of Corrective Experiences in Motivational Interviewing Integrated With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

A corrective experience (CE) is one "in which a person comes to understand or experience affectively an event or relationship in a different and unexpected way" (Castonguay & Hill, 2012, p. 5). CEs disconfirm clients' expectations based on past problematic experiences, and can be emotional, relational, behavioral, and/or cognitive. This qualitative study explored corrective shifts among recovered participants (N = 8) who had received motivational interviewing (MI) integrated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in a randomized controlled trial comparing CBT alone to MI-CBT for generalized a

Motivational interviewing, enhancement, and brief interventions over the last decade: A review of reviews of efficacy and effectiveness.

Motivation is a well-established predictor of recovery for addictive behaviors. Treatments aimed at changing substance use and gambling frequently employ motivational enhancing strategies, based in the principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI). Evidence for these approaches across addictive behaviors does not always paint a clear picture. The purpose of this review was to examine existing reviews of motivational-based interventions for various substances of abuse and gambling in the last decade to gain a deeper understanding of the current evidence and implications for future research and c
