Biomechanical Analysis of 3D Printed and Thermoformed EVA Custom-Made Mouthguard: Experimental and Finite Element Analyses.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: 3D printed materials have been evaluated for fabricating mouthguards; however, little is known about their biomechanical performance in preventing dental trauma. This study aimed to compare two 3D printed polymers and three ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) sheets used for mouthguard fabrication regarding their mechanical properties and stress-strain behavior during impact, analyzed through finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two 3D printed polymers, KeyGuard (Keystone) and DimaPrint (Kulzer), and three EVA sheets, Bio-art, Essence Dental, and Proform, were

NFL blood levels are moderated by subconcussive impacts in a cohort of college football players.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive subconcussive head impacts in contact/collision sports such as in US football are believed to contribute to long-term brain changes and chronic symptoms. However, the lack of tools to measure the effects of repeated subconcussion limits our understanding of potential contributions to neuropathological alterations including cellular damage. METHODS: We examined subconcussive head impacts using an accelerometer-embedded mouthguard on changes in blood levels of neurofilament light (NFL) chain in 18 Division I college football players. Plasma levels of NFL and clinical sy

Unilateral or "side-locked" migrainous headache with autonomic symptoms linked to night guard use.

Night guards are commonly prescribed as a palliative measure for bruxism, temporomandibular joint symptoms, and associated disorders. We describe a patient with a 10- to 12-year history of night guard use with concurrent unilateral side-locked migrainous headaches with autonomic symptoms characteristic of trigeminal autonomic cephalgia. These headaches were refractory to numerous pharmacological interventions. Upon self-initiated cessation of night guard use, there was complete remission of headaches. We believe the headaches were initiated by night guard-initiated irritation of the trigeminal

An unusual lateral luxation of an upper incisor owing to long-term boxing without protection.

This case report describes a lateral luxation of an upper incisor in a 19-year-old non-professional boxer. The tooth displacement gradually worsened over several months because the boxer received repeated blows to the head without using a mouthguard. Being a chronic dental trauma, rather than an acute lateral luxation, this case had several unique features: the labial plate of the alveolar bone was penetrated, the root apex was free in the vestibulum, the tooth was mobile (second degree) and radiographs revealed bone resorption. This case emphasized the need for a mouthguard to be used even wi

Dental injuries in inline skating - level of information and prevention.

Inline skating belongs like ice hockey, rugby, and boxing to sporting activities with high-risk of suffering tooth accidents. Because of high velocity and loss of balance, especially on uneven ground, the injury potential in inline skating is higher. The objective of this work was to conduct a comparative study between Switzerland and Germany. The questions focussed on the frequency of tooth accidents, their prevention by mouthguard and the level of information about emergency measures after dental trauma and the resulting consequences for athletes. Using a standardized questionnaire totally 6

Stress Distribution in Proclined Anterior Teeth of Pediatric Patients With and Without Mouthguard Use: A 3D Finite Element Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic dental injuries related to sports are a significant concern, as they can have severe physical and psychological impacts on children. Using mouthguards is essential, particularly in sports like skating, where high-impact forces are common. AIM: The study aimed to evaluate how stress is distributed on the teeth and surrounding bone in children with proclined anterior teeth when a force of 614.12 N was applied to two different regions of the jaws. The evaluation was conducted using finite element analysis (FEA), both with and without the use of a mouthguard. METHODS AND ME

Case Report of a Severe Recurrent Tongue Self-Injury in an Infant With Dystonia.

Dystonia is characterized by sustained or intermittent muscle contractions causing abnormal, often repetitive movements, postures, or both that are typically patterned, twisting, and sometimes tremulous. It is often initiated or worsened by voluntary action and associated with overflow muscle activation. In this article we report a case of severe oromandibular dystonia, which is a specific form of dystonia characterized by involuntary, action-induced tonic or clonic spasms of the masticatory, lingual, and pharyngeal musculature. Episodes of repeated tongue biting in a 17-month-old girl caused

Hypoxemia due to inserting a bite block in severely handicapped patients.

In severely handicapped patients with severe cerebral palsy, stridor can be caused by a bite block in the mouth. So that dental treatment can be performed safely for these patients, the effect of a bite block on the respiratory function of 30 severely handicapped patients was investigated with two pulse oximeters. Of the 30 subjects examined, 96.7% showed SpO2 values above 95% in the resting state, and 26.7% showed SpO2 values under 94% after insertion of a small or middle-sized bite block. Patients who did not show SpO2 decrease while using a small bite block did have deterioration of SpO2 va

Possible disease transmission by contaminated mouthguards in two young football players.

Previous studies have demonstrated that athletic mouthguards worn by ice hockey and football players harbor large numbers of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, some of which are either opportunistic or frank pathogens. This article details the clinical history of two junior high school football players. The first player had cellulitis of the leg after a non-break injury. The same unusual bacterium was isolated from both the athletic mouthguard and abscess cultures from the wound. The second patient suffered an attack of exercise-induced asthma so severe that his inhaler could not control the symptom

Effective treatment of self-injurious oral trauma in Lesch-Nyhan syndrome: a case report.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) is an X-linked disorder originating from deficiency of the enzyme hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyl transferase. It is characterized by neurological manifestations, including the dramatic symptom of compulsive self-mutilation, which results in destruction of oral and perioral tissues. Several drug trials have been administered to improve the severe self-destructive behaviour, with questionable effectiveness. Invasive treatment approaches, such as extraction of teeth and orthognathic surgery, have been suggested with variable success. A conservative treatment with a

Comparison of a novel teeth-protecting mouthpiece with a traditional device in preventing endoscopy-related complications involving teeth or temporomandibular joint: a multicenter randomized trial.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: After upper endoscopy, patients have complained of symptoms involving teeth or the temporomandibular joint; however, these endoscopy-related complications are usually ignored with few attempts to prevent them. The aim of this study was to identify the incidence of endoscopy-related complications involving teeth or temporomandibular joint, and to compare the effectiveness of a newly developed teeth-protecting mouthpiece (TPM) with a traditional mouthpiece (the MB-142) in preventing these complications. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 872 patients from 28 centers, who were unde
