Impact of Cocos nucifera oil mouthwash on salivary glycoproteins: A randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Salivary glycoproteins contribute to enamel protection, lubrication, and microbial regulation, making them useful biochemical indicators of oral health. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of Cocos nucifera oil (CNO) mouthwash on total salivary protein and selected salivary glycoproteins (MUC5B, albumin, globulin, and amylase) in adults with moderate caries over 28 days. METHODS: In this double-blind, parallel-group randomized trial, 40 adults aged 18-40 years (DMFT >3) were assigned to use either CNO mouthwash (10 mL, 10 min daily) or amine fluoride (AF) mouthwash (15 mL, 1 min da

The use of chlorhexidine mouthwash and diagnosis of primary hypertension in a large hospital cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Small-scale studies reported increased blood pressure in patients using chlorhexidine mouthwash with the rationale that the rinse mitigates nitric oxide production by oral bacteria. The present study evaluated whether prior use of chlorhexidine mouthwash can be associated with an increased odds ratio (OR) for primary hypertension in a large hospital cohort. METHOD AND MATERIALS: The i2b2 NIH-established platform was used to search for deidentified medical information coded by ICD-10 for subjects with a hypertension diagnosis who have used chlorhexidine rinses before between Octobe

Control of Dental Plaque and Gingival Inflammation by Natural Ingredients-Based Mouthwash.

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a new alcohol-free marine mouthwash containing an algae extract, a coastal plant extract, and seawater on plaque reduction, gingivitis, and oral microbiota balance. Methods: In a single-center, prospective, randomized comparative study, 50 subjects with gingivitis were assigned to either a marine mouthwash group (Test, n = 26) or a marketed mouthwash group (Comparator, n = 24). Clinical assessments included plaque, gingivitis, halitosis, and volunteer self-evaluation at baseline (T0) and after 7 days (T7). Gingival microbiot

Assessment of a combined mouthwash on pain relief in pericoronitis: a randomized clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Pericoronitis, an inflammation near wisdom teeth, often occurs when they are partially emerged, especially in the lower jaw. Commonly, the gingiva partially envelops the tooth. Treatments vary from gingival surgery to extraction. This study assessed the efficacy of a mouthwash with Chlorhexidine, Benzydamine, Nanosilver, Amoxicillin, and Metronidazole for pain reduction and enhancement of maximum mouth opening in acute pericoronitis cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized controlled clinical trial conducted at the Gorgan Dental Faculty, 48 pericoronitis patients were rand

Sodium-hyaluronate mouthwash on radiotherapy-induced xerostomia: a randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Radiotherapy-induced xerostomia (RIX) is one of the most common adverse effects of radiotherapy (RT) in head and neck cancer patients (HNC) and a major determinant of survivors' quality of life. The primary objective was to evaluate the reduction of patients' xerostomia symptoms after the utilisation of a sodium-hyaluronate mouthwash compared to a placebo solution. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the improvement of quality of life and to evaluate the patients' satisfaction. METHODS: The protocol was approved by the ethical committee (Ref. 50,053/19) and registered at C

Propolis mouthwash for preventing radiotherapy-induced mucositis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common head and neck cancer in Malaysia. The gold standard treatment of NPC is radiotherapy (RT), as NPC is a radiosensitive tumour. Although RT is successful in treating NPC, patients cannot avoid the resulting RT complications. Oral mucositis is the most frequently encountered debilitating complication of RT and has no specific preventive treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a 2.5% propolis mouthwash for preventing RT-induced mucositis in patients with NPC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was a pr

Antiseptic mouthwash inhibits antihypertensive and vascular protective effects of L-arginine.

L-arginine supplementation increases nitric oxide (NO) formation and bioavailability in hypertension. We tested the possibility that many effects of L-arginine are mediated by increased formation of NO and enhanced nitrite, nitrate and nitrosylated species concentrations, thus stimulating the enterosalivary cycle of nitrate. Those effects could be prevented by antiseptic mouthwash. We examined how the derangement of the enterosalivary cycle of nitrate affects the improvement of endothelial dysfunction (assessed with isolated aortic ring preparation), the antihypertensive (assessed by tail-cuff

New mouthwash: an efficacious intervention for oral ulceration associated with Behçet's disease.

Topical interventions to treat oral ulcers in Behçet's disease (BD) are crucial to control disease activity and improve patients' quality of life. Our aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new BD mouthwash (BD MW) for oral ulceration. A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out on 261 BD patients (141 women, mean (SD) age 39.9 (11.8) years, and 120 men, mean (SD) age 41.141(3.7) years). All were assessed using the oral ulcer severity score (OUSS), oral health quality of life (OHQoL), and the Behçet's disease current activity form (BDCAF). Patients were divided into three groups:

Allergic urticaria: a case report of rare skin allergy with a common mouthwash.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Chlorhexidine is a widely used antiseptic and disinfectant in medical and non-medical environments. Compared to its ubiquitous use, allergic contact dermatitis from chlorhexidine has rarely been reported and so its sensitization rate seems to be low. Chlorhexidine has been used for more than 50 years but it was only in the last two decades, that reports of immediate- type reactions to chlorhexidine were seen. Reactions ranging from localized urticaria to anaphylactic shock and hypersensitivity reactions, including delayed hypersensitivity reactions such as contact dermatitis, fixed drug erupti

[Mouthwash solutions with microencapsuled natural extracts: Efficiency for dental plaque and gingivitis].

Mouthwash solutions are mainly used for their antiseptic properties. They currently include synthetic agents (chlorhexidine, triclosan, etc.) or essential oils (especially Listerine). Many natural extracts may also be used. These associate both antiseptic effects and direct action on host response, due to their antioxidant, immunoregulatory, analgesic, buffering, or healing properties. The best known are avocado oil, manuka oil, propolis oil, grapefruit seed extract, pycnogenol, aloe vera, Q10 coenzyme, green tea, and megamin. The development of new technologies, such as microencapsulation (Gi

0.1% octenidine versus 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwashes for plaque-induced gingivitis: A triple-blinded randomized controlled trial.

Plaque-induced gingivitis is commonly managed by mechanical plaque control, but adjunctive mouthrinses may improve outcomes. Therefore, it is of interest to compare 0.1% octenidine, 0.2% chlorhexidine and placebo in 66 patients with plaque-induced gingivitis treated with scaling and root planing. Gingival index, plaque index, stain index and colony-forming units were recorded at baseline, 7 days and 15 days. Both octenidine and chlorhexidine produced significant reductions in gingival inflammation, plaque and microbial load compared with placebo, while chlorhexidine caused significantly greate

Effects of Charcoal-Based Mouthwashes on Color Change and Surface Roughness of a Stained Resin Composite.

OBJECTIVE: Charcoal-based mouthwashes have recently gained popularity, but current evidence on their effects on the color change (ΔE00) and surface properties of resin composites is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of five charcoal-based mouthwashes on the color change and surface roughness (Ra) of a stained resin composite. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Seventy disc-shaped resin composite specimens (Filtek Z250) were prepared and immersed in coffee for 12 days. The specimens were then randomly distributed into seven groups (n = 10), based on mouthwash used: five charcoal-based mout

Effective oral health in infective endocarditis: efficacy of high-street mouthwashes against the viridans group streptococci.

AIM: Recent UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines state that there is no longer a need for oral antibiotic prophylaxis in patients undergoing dental procedures who are at risk of infective endocarditis (IE), and advocate the importance of maintaining good oral health. As viridans group streptococci (VGS) are common etiological agents of IE and inhabitants of the mouth, the purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of common high-street mouthwashes against four classes of VGS organisms (salivarius, mitis, anginosus, and mutans groupings). METHODS: The surv

Effects of Antimicrobial Mouthwashes on Oral Health and Blood Pressure: A Preliminary Parallel Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Although antimicrobial mouthwashes vary in efficacy and safety for managing biofilm-induced gingivitis, concerns remain regarding their potential to reduce nitric oxide bioavailability and increase hypertension risk. Therefore, we investigated whether octenidine is more effective and causes fewer adverse events than chlorhexidine, and whether antimicrobial mouthwash use increases hypertension risk. METHODS: In this parallel randomized controlled trial, 90 participants were randomly allocated (1:1:1) to rinse with 10 mL of 2% saline (Group I), 0.2% chlorhexidine (Group II), or 0.1%

Conservative treatment with mouthwashes followed by tongue photo biomodulation therapy in Covid-19: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Oral manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), including ulcers, herpetiform lesions, macules, and petechiae, among others, are becoming increasingly recognized, but there is little guidance on their treatment. Reported cases have described treatment with various mouthwashes containing antivirals, antifungals, antibiotics, anesthetics, or steroids. Our case report is unique in that we provide guidance on the judicious use of these medications, followed by photobiomodulation therapy if the manifestations are treatment resistant. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 30-year
