What affects the movement can be seen from the movement: Effects of optical information and dynamical constraints on movement production and perception.

IMPORTANCE: Over the past decades, the number of patients, especially in the older adult patient group, diagnosed with vestibular schwannoma (VS) has increased. Assuming that older adult patients have more comorbidities, a longer recovery period after surgery, a higher rate of surgical complications, and a higher mortality rate after VS surgery, a treatment strategy for this group of patients is warranted, based on clinical evidence on postsurgical survival. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the survival after diagnosis of a VS in patients 70 years and older, treated with either observation or surgery,

Compensatory eye movements during voluntary head and neck movements.

We studied compensatory eye movements during passive and active head rotation using the video head impulse test in 5 healthy human subjects. In passive trials, compensatory eye movements occurred with a median latency of 16 ms following the onset of leftward and rightward head movements, and the median velocity gain was 0.94. In contrast, in active trials, the latencies of compensatory eye movements were reduced (median 4 ms) and the velocity gains were increased (median 1.08). We found similar reductions in latency and increases in gain of compensatory eye movements in active trials compared

Maintaining tandem movement cohesion through antennal movements in termites.

How do animals coordinate their motion during migration? Traditional models of movement coordination, for example, describing bird flocks or fish schools, rely on visual interactions. However, many animals are blind, requiring movement coordination through the maintenance of physical contact. The risks and cost of becoming accidentally separated may encourage the evolution of compensatory strategies. Here, we study tandem running in blind termites. We quantitatively investigate how these animals use their appendages to maintain stable pair movements. During tandem runs, male followers use thei

Extraction of sources of tremor in hand movements of patients with movement disorders.

This paper proposes an efficient method to acquire sources of tremor in patients with movement disorders based on blind source separation of convolutive mixtures. The extracted sources indicated neural activities that might be generated in the central nervous system. Four patients with essential tremor were tested in a set of movement tasks. Subjects wore a data glove that measured finger movements of the hand. The experimental data were then fed to a convolutive-mixture model, which revealed sources that imbibed in them the tremor frequency components of 2--8 Hz. Time--frequency analysis of t

Unprompted Alteration of Freely Chosen Movement Rate During Stereotyped Rhythmic Movement: Examples and Review.

Investigations of behavior and control of voluntary stereotyped rhythmic movement contribute to the enhancement of motor function and performance of disabled, sick, injured, healthy, and exercising humans. The present article presents examples of unprompted alteration of freely chosen movement rate during voluntary stereotyped rhythmic movements. The examples, in the form of both increases and decreases of movement rate, are taken from activities of cycling, finger tapping, and locomotion. It is described that, for example, strength training, changed power output, repeated bouts, and changed l

Developmental Eye Movement test and dyslexic children: A pilot study with eye movement recordings.

The goal of this study is to explore eye movement recordings during the Developmental Eye Movement (DEM) test in dyslexic and non-dyslexic children. Thirteen children with dyslexia, 13 non-dyslexic chronological age- and IQ-matched children and 13 non-dyslexic reading age- and IQ-matched children were examined. Test C of the DEM test was performed with and without eye movement recordings (eye tracker by SuriCog). The results of the three groups were compared. Children with dyslexia and non-dyslexic children of equivalent reading age have significant longer fixation time and take longer to read

Monitoring nocturnal movement and sleep in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review of movement sensors.

Movement sensors are increasingly used to assess sleep by detecting nocturnal (in)activity in Parkinson's disease (PD) research, but these studies are methodologically highly heterogenous and lack standardization. This systematic reviews evaluates 70 studies to inform standardization protocols for both research and clinical application. Results of the meta-analyses highlight that, at group level, actigraphy can differentiate people with PD (PwPD) from healthy controls. Sensitivity to detect change in wearable-derived measures is still unclear as meta-analyses for intervention studies were not

Distinct movement related changes in EEG and ECeG power during finger and foot movement.

Voluntary movement is known to be associated with cerebrally generated movement-related slow potentials and parallel changes in spectral power. The cerebellar and cerebral cortices are powerfully connected via reciprocal, crossed projections which mediate their coordination in motor, as well as cognitive and affective processes. The cerebellum participates in movement and the question remains as to the nature of movement related changes in power if any which might occur over the cerebellum. In a sample of six healthy adult subjects, we recorded EEG and the electro-cerebellogram (ECeG) with a 1

Validity of analysis of masticatory movement using a two-dimensional mandibular movement recording device.

To clarify the validity of analysis of masticatory movement using a two-dimensional (2D) mandibular movement recording device, masticatory movements (pattern of movement path, opening distance, masticatory width, and cycle time) were compared between simultaneous recordings made by 2D and three-dimensional (3D) devices in healthy adults. The 2D device can perform the same level of mandibular movement analysis as the 3D device if the distance between LED and camera is fixed (15 cm), and the findings indicated the suitability of the 2D device for clinical application.

Degeneration of rapid eye movement sleep circuitry underlies rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

During healthy rapid eye movement sleep, skeletal muscles are actively forced into a state of motor paralysis. However, in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder-a relatively common neurological disorder-this natural process is lost. A lack of motor paralysis (atonia) in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder allows individuals to actively move, which at times can be excessive and violent. At first glance this may sound harmless, but it is not because rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder patients frequently injure themselves or the person they sleep with. It is hypothesized that

Movement disorders rounds: Neurophysiological findings in abdominal movements in CASPR2 encephalitis.

Abdominal movements have been described as a possible unique manifestation of CASPR2-related autoimmune encephalitis. We describe a case of abdominal movements with neurophysiological evaluation showing a mean EMG burst duration of 350 ms and frequency of 1 Hz compatible with myorrhythmia. The case illustrates that awareness of the unique presentations of CASPR2-related autoimmune encephalitis can allow for timely diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment.

Learning complex upper-limb movements through practicing movement elements.

Upper-limb complex movements constitute a major part of our daily activities. Research shows complex movements are generated by sequences of movement elements represented by a unimodal bell-shaped velocity curve. We utilized this understanding in the field of motor skill acquisition and hypothesized that practicing a movement element of a complex movement trajectory will facilitate the performance on the respective complex movement trajectory. To test this, we designed an experiment where the control group learned a full complex trajectory, whereas the two elemental groups learned two differen

Axial movements are relatively preserved with respect to limb movements in aphasic patients.

Apraxia is commonly manifested during the acute stage following left hemisphere cerebrovascular accident and typically co-occurs with aphasia. We examined 30 acute stroke patients with aphasia and apraxia in order to determine if such patients show evidence of preservation of selective subclasses of movements. Although Geschwind noted the preservation of axial movements to command in aphasic apraxic patients, his views were subsequently refuted. However, we found that aphasic apraxic patients of varying degrees of severity, including patients with global aphasia, showed relative preservation o

[External Ocular Movement(EOM)Monitoring].

The intraoperative monitoring of extraocular motor nerves allows optimal skull base surgery by protecting the cranial nerves. For detecting cranial nerve function, several methods, such as external ocular movement monitoring with an electrooculogram(EOG), electromyogram(EMG), and piezoelectric device sensors, are present. While being valuable and useful, several problems related to its accurate monitoring persist when scanning from inside the tumor, which might be far from the cranial nerves. Here, we described three modalities, free-run EOG monitoring, trigger EMG monitoring, and piezoelectri

SOP: acute hyperkinetic movement disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Movement disorders emergencies describe acute-onset neurological conditions in which a delay of recognition and treatment may cause severe morbidity and mortality of patients. Hyperkinetic movement disorders include tremor, chorea/ballism, dystonia, myoclonus, and tics. Here we present a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the diagnostic work-up and different treatment options depending on the phenomenology as well as the aetiology of underlying diseases. COMMENTS: The recognition of the phenomenology is essential for the symptomatic therapy of the acute movement disorder and
