Neonatal bacterial meningitis continues to cause substantial mortality and morbidity despite the advent of new antimicrobial agents and of modern intensive care facilities. In Dallas, the case-fatality rate for bacterial meningitis in newborn and young infants is 17% (40 of 231 patients). Increasing numbers of cases of penicillin-resistant gonorrhea necessitate the evaluation of new antibiotics for treatment of this disease. A total of 78 consecutive patients with nontyphoid salmonella bacteremia were selected by microbiological and chart reviewing in the past 18 months to study its epidemiology, treatment and prognosis at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Linkou Medical Center. A continuing nationwide susceptibility survey of the Bacteroides fragilis group, begun in 1981, is being conducted at the New England Medical Center. Review of susceptibility testing in years 1986 through 1988 is reported here. Totals of 557 strains in 1986, 506 in 1987, and 534 in 1988 were obtained from seven centers in the United States. The sequential expressed prostatic secretion (EPS) levels of latamoxef (LMOX) were measured in 14 patients with acute bacterial prostatitis to evaluate the diffusion of this antibiotic from the plasma into the prostatic fluid. The concentration of latamoxef sodium (LMOX) in serum and prostatic tissue was evaluated. Thirty seven patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy were given 1 g LMOX intravenously prior to prostatectomy. A new antibiotic drug of oxacephem, with marked resistance to beta-lactamase, 6059-S for parenteral use was used in 12 patients with acute cholecystitis and cholangitis. 6059-S was given by intramuscular, intravenous or drip intravenous administration at a daily dose of 500 mg to 2 g. Clinical response was excellent in 1 case, good in 10 cases, fair in 1 case and poor in none. Any clinical adverse effect was not recognized. 6059-S is a dose of 500 mg was given by intramuscular administration before the operation to 9 patients.
