OBJECTIVES: To characterise mucins in cancer of the colon and compare these with controls using stringent biochemical measures to avoid endogenous proteolysis.
DESIGN: Crude mucus scrapings were collected from 12 specimens obtained by colectomy. Specimens from 3 traumatic colectomies and 1 sigmoid volvulus were used as controls, and compared with 6 specimens from colons resected for adenocarcinoma and 2 irradiated colons.
SUBJECTS: The median age of the 4 female patients was 76 years (range 49 - 82 years), and of the 8 male patients 46.5 years (range 16 - 74 years).

Mucins are the major glycoprotein component of respiratory tract secretions. Little is known about their expression in the upper respiratory tract. In order to define this expression, in situ hybridization was performed on 19 normal and 4 vasomotor rhinitis (VMR) inferior turbinates to identify mucin mRNA. MUC1, MUC2, MUC4, MUC5AC, MUC5B, and MUC7 were expressed in both the normal and VMR turbinates. MUC4 and MUC5AC were the most highly expressed mucins. MUC1, MUC2, MUC4, and MUC5AC were expressed mainly by the epithelial border, whereas MUC5B and MUC7 were expressed by the submucosal glands.

Alterations in the expression of mucin family members play an important role as well as alterations in oncogenes and onco-suppressor genes in carcinogenesis and progression of pancreatic cancer. BACKGROUND: Neurenteric cysts are rare central nervous system lesions derived from an endodermal origin. There is no consensus concerning pathogenesis because of the paucity of occurrences. We report an immunohistochemical study of 10 cases with neurenteric cysts and postulate its pathogenesis.
